An End to American Idol's Gay Problem?

Mario and Anwar

The other possibly gay contestant also happens to be a top contender: Anwar Robinson. He’s the dreadlocked music teacher from New Jersey who Paula Abdul declared has “the best vocal technique in this competition” and who Randy Jackson said “gave the best performance of the whole competition” when he sang “What a Wonderful World.”

The evidence about Anwar is not as strong, but he definitely raised this reporter’s eyebrows when he started squealing during applause after his pitch-perfect but corny rendition of “What’s Going On.” This 25-year-old director of the Newark Boys Chorus has the slightly deranged smile and goody-two-shoes girliness of many choir directors. Or Nellie Olson from Little House on the Prairie.

On the official AI boards one of his ardent female fans confessed that “I just find myself wishing that he had a bit more of an edge to him-- he's just so … feminine!” When one fan described him as looking sexy in a turtleneck with his dreads pulled back, another retorted “yeah, sexy for a woman. But he sang the heck out of that song.”

Of course, Anwar may just be an effeminate straight man, a subcategory of what Kate Bornstein dubbed “gender outlaws.” We all know that gender expression does not always correlate with sexual identity.

It would be shocking if either Mario or Anwar did not make it very far in the contest: Mario’s the Latin Justin Timberlake and Anwar’s the one with the flawless pipes. Maybe the gay speculation is groundless--but maybe one or both of them actually is gay, and will come out of the closet. Will Young, the first U.K. winner, came out almost immediately after winning and subsequently emerged as one of the biggest stars in the U.K. Of course, the Elton John- and Scissor Sisters-loving Brits are more open-minded than we are.

Wouldn’t it be an incredible cultural advance if one of America’s next pop stars were openly gay? An openly gay Latino sex symbol, for instance, would flout stereotypes and break new cultural and political ground. Maybe Mario will be the next Ricky Martin. But better.

March 14th Update: Mario Vasquez has dropped out of American Idol for undisclosed "personal reasons; read more on Mario and Anwar at the official American Idol site

Get real people...

Come on. This article reminds me of fascist GOP 9/11 spin. Did it ever occur to you that Hollywood has been experiencing a gay renaissance? That American Idol producers are partial to Friends Of Dorothy on purpose and Simon Coward may be closeted? If there was an anti-gay bias, so many gorgeous faced hunks wouldn't have made it this far. Please. Don't insult your reader's intelligence by insinuating false discrimination where there is none. You don't have to be straight to admit the truth. You just have to be honest and accept who you are without a phoney ass agenda. We need to evolve beyond the spin to the point where we can share the pop culture rather than diss it. Gay TV rules. Deal with it and stop the BS.

Gay or Not To Be Gay

Some might view it as just a singing competion, where you could actually end up being a huge international star. You have to take in consideration that there are many talented people walking this earth that never get the opportunity to actually showcase their talents. AI gives many of those people that chance within reason. You have to know that we live in a world where even boybands, can't be out until they are found out about. It seems there was a time, that N'Sync ruled the planet and you couldn't open a mag or turn on the tube and them not being thrusted in your face. The hottest group on the planet and one of the hottest guys of the group, just might happen to be gay.  It's very safe to say that the water at that time wasn't cold because there were already other established artist that were out and doing fairly well. I'm not sure but I think Lance was advised not to come out and to avoid the subject.  His team weren't telling him not to be himself but they were basically telling him without telling him, that being gay won't go over well with your core audience. Things got so bad that he was willing to trade in singing to be an astronaut. Anytime that going outerspace is better than dealing with questions about who your dating or sleeping with, then it's time to pick a new career. He was in a position that he couldn't think of just his own dreams and everything that he worked for but that of his bandmates/brothers as well. As you can see Lance doesn't have any solo efforts coming out and probably doesn't have to sing another note in his life but he still remains on everyone's tongue. Think about this machine called AI and then you realize that with all your success even after the show, you still have a hard time being yourself. Clay is a good example because the boy is cute and talented and whether you believe it or not just might be gay. His main problem is with all of America watching his every move, he still is trapped or pigeon-holed thanks to his time on AI.  America saw him as this very wholesome boy-next-door type, that didn't curse or swear and was almost as saintly as Pat Boone. The sad thing about that whole image thing is the wholesome boy-next-door just might be gay. There was a time in America that many thought, if a woman wore bright red lipstick, then she was either a whore or someone that slept around. We are a very advanced nation but our thinking on occasion is so primative. People still cringe seeing two men just holding hands, I said nothing about kissing yet.  We might never see an AI top 10 gay person, until they break their chains or dealings with the show.  How cute was Ace Young and he makes my gaydar go crazy but that because I only wish he was gay.  Ace if your out there call me.
