An End to American Idol's Gay Problem?
The other possibly gay contestant also happens to be a top contender: Anwar Robinson. He’s the dreadlocked music teacher from New Jersey who Paula Abdul declared has “the best vocal technique in this competition” and who Randy Jackson said “gave the best performance of the whole competition” when he sang “What a Wonderful World.” The evidence about Anwar is not as strong, but he definitely raised this reporter’s eyebrows when he started squealing during applause after his pitch-perfect but corny rendition of “What’s Going On.” This 25-year-old director of the Newark Boys Chorus has the slightly deranged smile and goody-two-shoes girliness of many choir directors. Or Nellie Olson from Little House on the Prairie. On the official AI boards one of his ardent female fans confessed that “I just find myself wishing that he had a bit more of an edge to him-- he's just so … feminine!” When one fan described him as looking sexy in a turtleneck with his dreads pulled back, another retorted “yeah, sexy for a woman. But he sang the heck out of that song.” Of course, Anwar may just be an effeminate straight man, a subcategory of what Kate Bornstein dubbed “gender outlaws.” We all know that gender expression does not always correlate with sexual identity. It would be shocking if either Mario or Anwar did not make it very far in the contest: Mario’s the Latin Justin Timberlake and Anwar’s the one with the flawless pipes. Maybe the gay speculation is groundless--but maybe one or both of them actually is gay, and will come out of the closet. Will Young, the first U.K. winner, came out almost immediately after winning and subsequently emerged as one of the biggest stars in the U.K. Of course, the Elton John- and Scissor Sisters-loving Brits are more open-minded than we are. Wouldn’t it be an incredible cultural advance if one of America’s next pop stars were openly gay? An openly gay Latino sex symbol, for instance, would flout stereotypes and break new cultural and political ground. Maybe Mario will be the next Ricky Martin. But better.
