A Look Back at Jon Stewart's Greatest Gay Moments

There are many other gems of gayishness lurking in The Daily Show’s new video archive, but alas, they must be mined another day, after Comedy Central works out the beta-kinks.

[Note: Since this 2007 article was written, The Daily Show video archive has resolved the issues writer Christie Keith here mentions]

For example, one unplayable segment from 2001 is described tantalizingly thus: “Abercrombie and Fitch ads clearly sell homosexuality.” Another, equally unplayable, is Part 1 of a three-part visit to a gay sports bar in New York’s Chelsea district during the 2000 World Series, where Daily Show sports correspondent Steve Carell ended up dancing on a catwalk while the crowd cheered him on. How did it happen? We’ll never know until Comedy Central gets its act together – or asks a sixth grader how vid upload sites work.

The search and tagging systems leave a bit to be desired, too. For example, no amount of searching could get one of Stewart’s classic gay marriage rants to come up, the one where he asked, “Are they going to make us marry gay?” He was worried, he said, about one thing: “I think that it’s going to be mandatory, because if it’s not, why would anyone really care? Unless the government is going to force you to make man-love, I don’t know why it would keep you up at night.” And neither the terms “gay” nor “banana” brought up the infamous Stephen Colbert banana clip (although searching for “Prince Charles” did).

Beth Littleford and "pro-gay"

First off, Beth Littleford was one of The Daily Show's most prominent correspondents in its early years. Given that she hasn't been on the show since 2000, it's understandable that you might not realize who she is, but it's unspeakably unprofessional to say, "whoever she is." In fact, "The Beth Littleford Interview" was one of the first Daily Show spinoffs. Secondly, how does Stewart criticizing Melissa Etheridge make him any less "pro-gay" than he's always been? Is she exempt from criticism? You can only be "pro-gay" if you unabashedly love everything she says? I'm a gay liberal Democrat and I was cringing at some of her questions. Does that make me less than "pro-gay"?

My favorite gay moment on

My favorite gay moment on The Daily Show was Samantha Bee's report on the gay penguins at the Central Park Zoo.

Birds of a Feather

"Just because it happens in nature does NOT make it natural."

"Umm... I think by definition that actually does."

Classic.

Yes!

Isn't that the same guy she asked about other gay animals, "... like Garfield?"

"... What about Garfield?"

"He's a confirmed bachelor, a finicky eater, he doesn't like to get his feet wet..."

Melissa Etheridge actually

Melissa Etheridge actually said “I’m a rock star”—she actually said that? She deserved everything she got. Jesus, she’s like an inch away from releasing a greatest hits box set with some sort of poster that folds into a giant origami Melissa Etheridge face, oh and it’ll be 95 dollars. I couldn’t love Jon Stewart more; the only other person who could do that job is Tina Fey.

I think I'd better dance now

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

Surely the kid in the Gaydar segment is in on the joke. And I'll bet, once it aired, his sexlife went throught the roof. One question on his invention, though: does it only work on gay squirrels?

I respectfully disagree

I respectfully disagree about the Gaybar segment being gay-baiting or cruel. Well, actually, I mainly disagree that the boy looked like he was about to cry. The boy seemed a little confused, yes, but he was pretty giggly throughout and ended up happily dancing for Stephen.

But I completely agree that the Bill Bennet interview is possibly Jon's best ever. I remember cheering out loud for that. :)

(Also, the tag for Stephen is mispelled, yet his name in the article is correct. It niggles at me.)

Two other Daily Show segments

Great article from Christie. I loved seeing some of these clips. Two others that would make it onto my all time favorite list....

Rob Cordry's recent "Trapped in the Men's Room"

...and a recent interview with David Rakoff....

My fave gay TDS clip

My absolute favorite Gayly show clip is Samantha Bee's interview of Ed Heeney titled "Homonausic." I can find it easily enough, but can't seem to get it to play.

in canada

I don't think any of these clips can be viewed in Canada, because none of the videos were available to me. :( (Or maybe it's just my computer.) For Canadians, if you can't view these clips, some of the clips can be found by searching manually at thecomedynetwork.ca

Tangled up in Blue

I love the segment focusing on the large number of Arabic translators who've been thrown out of the Army for being gay. One of them's a guy named Blue, and I remember the reporter trying to distract him by dancing in his underpants, thus PROVING that homos are unfit in the military. Hilarious as ususal. ]

She is too fond of books, and it has turned her brain~ Louisa May Alcott

OMG, how have I never seen so many of these?

I got the giggles myself watching Colbert and Stewart lose it during the "banana segment." As for the kid who invented Gaydar--what a cutie! I did feel badly for him, he had such a deer-in-the-headlights look every time Colbert pressed him on his orientation, but his giddy dance (!!!) at the end broke some of the tension.

All this just reaffirms to me that some of the best progress being made for gays and their civil rights sometimes comes from heterosexuals with sharp eyes and an even sharper sense of humor.
