The AfterElton.com 2007 Visibility Awards

Rest in Peace:

Comedian Charles Nelson Reilly died earlier this year at age 76, and the multi-talented performer, probably best-known for his Match Game appearances, also deserves credit for being as out as a celebrity could be in the 1970s. Reilly was also a Tony Award winning actor, made dozens of television appearances beyond Match Game, and can currently be seen in The Life of Reilly, the film version of his one-man stage show about his life.

One of the most unexpected and sad deaths this year was that of Doug Blasdell of Bravo's Work Out. Doug died suddenly after struggling with lymphoma cancer and we talked with Doug's fellow trainer Brian Peeler about Doug's life and the impact he had on the world.

Gay historian Allan Berube died this year at age 61. His look at gay service members who fought during WWII helped shed light on the issues of gays in the military.

Associate editors Brian Juergens and Dennis Ayers both contributed to this article.

The "real" Best Mainstream Film Featuring Gay Characters

SUPERBAD!!

Not only was this movie gut-wrenchingly funny, but its all about 2 teen boys and the separation anxiety they feel about their futures at 2 different colleges. Amidst all the raunchy jokes is a really touching story of 2 guys who really, really love each other and who have shared everything throughout their lives.

Sure, they never come out an say that Seth is gay, but EVERYTHING in the story is screaming it, right down to the ending scene with the 2 girls in the mall. There is no intention by the writers that we not "get" that Seth is gay. Its all the funnier and true that Seth doesn't quite "get" that he is gay yet. Sure, he's not Nuke...but come on, how many of us really were? Seth is a far more realistic portrayal of a gay teen than any of the current stuff on tv or film.

Come on Michael...if you haven't seen Superbad, you're missing out on the best gay character of the year!

Music

I am disappointed and stunned to see no mention on Kanye West whatsoever in this piece. First and foremost, he released the years BEST album (Graduation) to incredible success, established himself as THE most popular musical artist in America today, and as the most popular rapper, and also reaffirmed his support for Gay Rights and the Gay Community all while being on a fairly homophobic record label (albeit, one with new gay icon Rhianna). To ignore West's stance on homophobia in the hip-hop industry and the black community as a whole is criminal.

Glad U said it

I didn't know that about Kanye West cuz I've (intentionally) gotten as close-minded about Hip-Hop Culture as they R about Gay Culture.  I grew up in the ghetto so I've had this lifetime of feeling that lesbians were okay but us fags weren't (the BET review sums that up 4 me).  So 2 me this is a big deal.

Kanye West

Art,

I must say that I have never been a fan of Kanye West, and never would have imagined that he would be an advocate for Gay Rights. I will certainly look into that, and hopefully change my perception of him. Thanks for bringing that side of Kanye to my attention.

You're quite right about "Superbad," sonicswoon

Even straight critics caught on to the fact that beneath this wonderfully silly teen comedy there's a love story. The fact that Seth isn't onto himself yet makes it all the more insightful and touching. I'm sure it struck a chord with many a gay man.
