Gay Visibility Rises at Emmy Awards

A TUMULTOUS YEAR FOR HARRIS AND KNIGHT

Last year, both Knight and Harris found themselves embroiled in situations that led to their coming out as gay men. Knight revealed he was gay after an on-set scuffle between Grey's Anatomy co-stars Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington (who has since left the show). Meanwhile, when Harris found his sexual orientation at the center of much speculation online, he also elected to announce that he is gay.

Even though Knight, Harris, and McKellen lost their respective Emmy contests, gay visibility nonetheless won Sunday night. Gay actors have long been fearful that being out might cost them their careers, but simply by being nominated each man proved that need not be case. It's especially noteworthy for Harris and Knight given that both play straight men. Neither are outright romantic leads — a barrier that yet remains to be broken — but Harris plays a womanizing cad while Knight plays an intern romantically involved with one of his co-workers.

The recognition by their peers, as well as the success of their shows (Grey's Anatomy more so than HIMYM which struggled in the ratings last season), are encouraging that both Hollywood and the general public have grown more comfortable with the idea of gay actors playing straight roles that aren't neutered into sexless stereotypes.

Some have speculated whether or not both men's nominations had as much to do with their peers showing support and approval for the two as gay men as it did with their acting skills. In a recent Los Angeles Times article, reporter Scott Collins wrote "Yet it's possible, just possible, that Emmy voters were looking to send a larger message than simply patting Harris on the back for a job well done. His is the latest career swept up in a larger cultural debate about actors' roles and their personal lives and the willingness of the public to distinguish between the two."

Knight's and Harris' nominations as a vote of support is certainly possible, but it's unfortunate that they very good work of both men is tarnished by such questions.

Having three out actors also presented gay fans with the rare opportunity of seeing gay actors attend an award event with their significant others. This week Harris appeared on Ellen Degeneres' daytime talk show and when asked with whom he would attend the event, said it would be his boyfriend (and fellow actor) David Burtka.

In fact, the two did attend together and their subsequent appearance on the red carpet as a couple marks one of the highest moments of visibility for two men involved romantically. For a number of years now, lesbian couples have attended public events together including Ellen and her girlfriend Portia de Rossi, Melissa Etheridge and her partner Tammy Lynn Michaels, and Rosie O'Donnell and her partner Keli Carpenter. To finally see such a high profile gay male couple appear at an event such as the Emmys almost makes up for the fact that Harris, Knight, and McKellen went home empty-handed.

If Scott Collins wasn't

If Scott Collins wasn't willing to speculate if Masi Oka's nomination was because the Emmy voters realized they've overlooked Asian-American men one too many in the past than it's equally inappropriate to raise this subject with any out gay actor. Since it seems the article is addressing NPH alone than it's more ludicrous considering the length of his career and the fact he successfully and skillfully anchored his own show as a teenager. It's clear he's talented and shouldn't have to justify any accolades he recieves. Neither should TR Knight. I concede the controversies probably drew attention to their names with the nomination committees but had they been truly subpar then the voters wouldn't hesitate to ignore their work. Both have been repeatedly praised by critics so it's more coincidental that their time happened to be due.

Not to be too vulgar...

Not to be too vulgar, Michael, but I don't think that in the Bill Maher nominee skit, his spraying breath freshener in his mouth was to imply he was about to solicit someone.

yeah...........

I think Bill Maher was "finished" using the restroom in his skit. Also it wasn't a pirate outfit Ryan was wearing but a Tudor costume like Henry VIII.

Brothers and Sisters

When was Brothers and Sisters ever at risk of cancellation? From Episode 1, it held on to a good portion of housewives audience. Were you referring to the problems the show had before the pilot even aired? All hail 30 Rock. Please watch this fledgling but brilliant show!

Even thougth B&S did hold

onto a good portion of DH there was still speculation until about mid-season that the show might get axed. It wasn't getting a good critical reaction and wasn't posting great numbers, sometimes not even winning it's time slot. A bad second ep could've killed it.

No explanation necessary

I agree with Gwen. Neither Neil nor T.R. need to justify their Emmy nominations. Before Neil came out, many critics cited his character of Barney as the show's scene-stealer. And T.R. wasn't the only one nominated from ''Grey's Anatomy''; so were Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl and Chandra Wilson. ''Grey's'' is a popular show with the Emmy crowd. (For the record, Isaiah Washington did NOT submit himself for Emmy consideration.) Speaking of Emmys, did anyone see Rex Lee and Michael Urie at the Creative Emmys? They were soooo campy. Is there anything gayer than that? They pointed out that they both played openly gay characters on TV, and it was kinda stereotypical for them to present the Emmys for hairstyling and makeup. Interestingly, only Lee is out.

Neil Patrick Harris and 'buddy'

First of all, let me say that I love Neil Patrick Harris and that I really respect how he's handled his public coming out process up to now.

When he said on Ellen that he was going to the Emmy's with his boyfriend, David, I thought: this man RULES!!!

But then I see the picture and my heart sank. I understand it's the first time NPH's been photographed 'at work' with his boyfriend, and that he doesn't want to be 'political', but his pose comes off as so determined to avoid any show of connection or affection to his boyfriend, it almost negates the fine gesture he made of bringing Burtka in the first place.

Maybe I'm overreacting, but I'm mighty disappointed.

It Might Be Shocking but..

Not everyone does Public displays of affection.

Ryan Seacrest

I'm really surprised that Seacrest is getting a pass on that homophobic comment from last night. Where's GLAAD when you need them?

Hmmm. . .

. . .while I'm tickled pink that our gay brothers snagged Emmy nominations. . .

. . .I don't hold much stock in those particular awards anymore.

Especially since they failed to recognize the wonderful Gale Harold and Sharon Gless in QUEER AS FOLK (in seasons past) with Emmy nominations. . .

Been there, done that, bought the soundtrack!
