The History of TV's Gay Teens from "ATWT" to "Queer as Folk"

Greek (2007)

What would happen if, on getting to college, Luke Snyder or Justin Taylor or Marco Del Rossi decided that coming out in high school hadn’t been the greatest idea they’d ever had, and they went back in the closet?

That’s the question teen drama Greek asks about high school frat boy Calvin Owens (Paul James). Audiences don’t even know he’s gay when the pilot begins, although if you’re in the know, you’ll catch him checking out the guys even before you see him sneaking out of another guy's frat house bedroom in the early morning hours.

It’s not until the fourth episode of the series, when his dad pays him a visit at this fraternity house, that we find out that not only was he out in high school, but his family had no problems with him being gay. Calvin had decided he didn’t like being “the gay guy,” and decided not to be open about who he really is when he got to college.

Although he does finally start up a relationship with Heath (Zack Lively), and also comes out to his friend Rusty, who takes it in stride, his secrecy about his sexual orientation creates all kinds of problems for him during the school year. Heath isn’t happy with Calvin’s unwillingness to be seen with him, or take their relationship beyond the bedroom. His female friend, Ashleigh (Amber Stevens) is humiliated when she tries to seduce him and he tells her he’s gay. And when Ashleigh inadvertently outs him to his frat brothers in the season finale, they shun him until he takes off his pledge pin and leaves.

Rumors about next season are that Calvin’s going to find out what losing his place in his fraternity really means to him; it’s hard to believe that it will mean more than his self-respect, which is considerable. Although the idea that Calvin wants to be seen for himself, and believes he can only do that by hiding part of who he is, could be some kind of post-gay thing, it’s more likely that he’s going to find out that being honest about who you really are is more important than he first thought.

And maybe by then Noah will figure that out, too.

How about the Episode of "Family".

Maybe I am showing my age here, however, way back when I remember that the weekly drama "Family" aired a very controversial episode about a gay High school student coming out. Everyone was taking about it.

Family....

I didn't include "very special episodes" involving non-regular characters. I'm sure there are a few of those that happened in the 80s and 90s, some of which I dimly remember. But for the purposes of this article, I wanted to focus not so much on storylines as on characters, and I needed more than a Very Special Episode to do that.

What actually surprised me is that I assumed there would be at least one "after school special" type shows dealing with this during that time period, and yet all I could find was "The Truth About Alex," which was on HBO. I didn't have HBO back then, but I must have either watched it with a friend or possibly had someone tape it for me. I still have the tape, in fact, and re-watched it for this article. Different times then, for sure!

Consenting Adult

One TV Movie that I always remember and that was very well done was Consenting Adult in 1985.  This movie stared Marlo Thomas and Martin Sheen and focused on the coming out of their son Jeff played by Barry Tubb?  It was filmed in Vancouver but released on American TV.  Marlo Thomas received a Golden Globe nomination for Acting and the Director Gilbert Cates received an Emmy nomination.  It is defineatly worth a look!

Yes, I remember taping that tv movie

It was very well done, the end scenes where Jeff and his mother are talking after the funeral and when she calls Jeff and asked him and Stuart over for Christmas was a tear jerker.  Funny, this for some reason hasn't been released on DVD. If and when it does, be sure to pick it up.

I'm confused. Is it bitch slap or slap a bitch?

The 2 Alex(s)

I remember watching "The Truth About Alex" with my sisters back in the day. I'm 30 years old now and I still remember my little sister (by one year) ask me if Alex was turned gay by the guy in bathroom that hit on him. She had no idea what being gay meant. I recall feeling anxious at how to answer the question. I ended up telling her "No, he was gay all the time." She brushed it off. I on the other hand, remember it like it was yesterday. I think it was the first time I asked my self whether I was gay, whether people knew I was gay, and whether I wanted to be gay, etc. Unfortunately, I think that was when I really started to act as straight as possible. Or whatever warped adolescent idea I had of being straight.

Did I mention my name too is Alex.

Schoolbreak special

I just finished writing a whole big paragraph about this then I remembered Evan Handler was in it. It was a Schoolbreak Special on CBS from 1987 called "What if I'm Gay". The popular and macho captain of the high-school soccer team is forced to confront his homosexuality, after his buddies discover a male-pornography magazine in his bedroom. I didn't get HBO so I knew there had to be another one. I remember the end where his friends go to see him and since nobody opens the door they think he may have tried to kill himself. Just as they are about to break down the door the young man drives up, he had went to get pizza I believe. I was just hitting puberty when this came out so I remember watching it with one finger on the remote in case my parents walked in.

"What If I'm Gay..."

Wow, I'll try to track that down. I don't remember it at all, and it didn't turn up in my research. But it sounds interesting, and that twist of them thinking he'd killed himself but he just went for pizza totally cracks me up.... I'd like to know how they handled that, was it funny?

My So Called Life

Wasn't that character originally supposed to be bi, but the show's creator felt pressure to make him gay? I wonder what kind of further anti-gay messages DH will make now if they are going to try turn Andrew onto women.

Hollyoaks?

I assume you kept this out because of concentrating on the North American shows (and as it just recently became a finished storyline), but I loved the John Paul/Craig storyline on the British soap Hollyoaks-a really well done guy/guy version of a Chasing Amy type relationship, looking into the fluid ideas of sexuality that are simulataneously based on a the forward thinking idea that love should just be love, no matter the gender, and the personal fear and conflict that labeling can create in anyone.

I totally agree

Hollyoaks had a superb teen story with John Paul and Craig, especially showing John Paul going from being a popular athlete and student to being bullied and shunned by most of the other people at the school. He always kept his dignity and his backbone, but his biggest weakness was Craig, who began to go through his own sexuality issues. The show did a great job of showing the differences between the 2 boys, that Craig had such a horrible time accepting himself. They also made sure to not make it seem like Craig was just some gay guy in denial.

The ending still breaks my heart.

unlucky

This was an interesting read. Unlucky for me in australia we dont get all the soaps mentioned. we do see desperate and had dawsons as well as QAF (amercian and UK version) We dont get much else unless you get cabale. But we do have our home grown soaps which have attempted to have gay teens, but they have never really stuck around for long. Though one show called GP had a gay guy for 2 season and that braught up interesting stories. His first gay kiss was big news back in the 80's when the show was made. But alas I have not had the luck to see any NUKE stuff.

Justin

is my favourite gay teen on the tube. I thought his character compelling, complex, self-confident but also a mass of contradictions. I am now about to start season 5 of QAF and have been impressed by how his character has evolved. I just wish he had hooked up with someone who was more appreciative of him than Brian.

Cheers
