Review of Torchwood’s Second Season PremiereBut this is Torchwood, where no one is just gay, straight or bisexual. Torchwood creator Davies says his characters have moved beyond standard definitions of sexuality – they’re omnisexual – and don’t worry about the gender of their partners. Indeed, Ianto isn’t the only person in whom Jack is interested.
Shortly after he first returns from his mysterious disappearance, Jack tells Gwen, “What kept me fighting was coming back to you.” This builds on a sexual chemistry between the two that occasionally surfaced during the first season. Later Jack learns that Gwen is engaged to her boyfriend, Rhys, on whom she cheated with Owen in the first season. He is taken aback by the news and Gwen clearly hopes he’ll object and make his own romantic feelings about her clear. Instead, he only congratulates her. Later, when Gwen believes she is about to die in order to save Cardiff, she says, “Tell Jack … tell Jack I – .” It’s obvious she wanted Jack to know she loved him, but before she can get the words out, he arrives and saves her life. And even though Captain John turns out to be every bit as bad as Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer (at least Spike pre-chip-implant), his feelings for Jack appear to be quite genuine. Jealous of the younger and better-looking Ianto, he refers to him as “eye candy” and warns him away from Jack. He also tells Gwen she should give up on Jack as well, advising, “He won’t stay with you. He and I shared something.” Then later, after killing Jack, John touches his lips tenderly in a gesture meant to communicate that despite murdering his former lover, he did truly love him. John’s just the sort of fellow who puts commerce before romance. Of course, at the very end of the episode, that murderous interlude doesn’t keep John from sharing one final kiss with Jack (who is immortal, by the way, much to John’s surprise) before being banished from earth by his onetime love.
Like I said, Torchwood’s a very gay … well, omnisexual series. And while there is nothing inherently wrong in being “omnisexual” (or just plain slutty, depending on one’s point-of-view), Jack’s potential interest in so many different partners might be frustrating for those hoping for a great same-sex pairing akin to Buffy and Angel in Buffy or Carrie and Mr. Big in Sex and the City. After all, if Jack loves everybody, will he every truly love any one in particular? In addition to romantic sparks flying with Ianto, Gwen, and Captain John, last season Captain Jack also had a passionate (if very brief), doomed romance with his own namesake, Captain Jack Harkness (Matt Rippy). While unabashedly romantic and providing one of the most heartfelt same-sex kisses ever seen on television, the brief relationship again highlighted Captain Jack’s mercurial romantic impulses. While that might make for dramatic television, it could potentially frustrate gay viewers hoping for something more. But don’t despair. Reviews and plot synopses of upcoming episodes provide clues that the Jack and Ianto pairing (Jainto? Iack?) does gain steam. There is at least another kiss between the two and one episode hinges on Jack’s love of Ianto. And things could get even more complicated for Torchwood’s same-sex pairings as it appears Captain John returns for at least one more episode as well. One other item of note: In the final moments of “Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang” another small clue to Jack’s backstoryback story is revealed. And it’s one that promises to further demonstrate that gay men are capable of all sorts of love. Torchwood airs on Saturdays at 9 p.m. on BBC America Submitted by on Wed, 2008-01-23 22:22. |

Can't wait to see how Series 2 develops
I think that Torchwood has been slowly finding it's feet. As mentioned, this is a first in that it is a non-comedy series with a lead character that is not heterosexual and even the BBC felt the need to test the waters.
While I have little doubt that openly-gay Barrowman prefers having male romantic interests on-screen, the omnisexual mystique is a large part of the Captain Jack character.
That said, Jack/Ianto (commonly labelled "Janto") is the most favored pairing on Torchwood fanfiction sites, apparently even (or especially) amongst women. I suspect that this fact (which Barrowman claimed to be surprised by in an interview a ways back) has contributed to the Janto relationship being moved up a bit in Series 2. Hopefully it will develop well, although given Jack's personality I have a hard time imagining him as anyone's monogamous partner.
Gwen has always (to me) felt like an awkward, somewhat forced character element in the series. My impression is that she is meant to be equivalent to Rose Tyler in Series 1 & 2 of Doctor Who (i.e. the sympathetic "everywoman" that the superhuman lead looks to to connect with humanity and gradually falls in love with). The problem is that I have never felt that the chemistry between them was very authentic, at least compared to the sexual tension between her and Owen or the domestic cuteness of her and Rhys.
Of course, I am biased here. There's no question that I (and armies of fangirls) would rather see Jack with Ianto. Even so Torchwood remains groundbreaking as a sci-fi/action series where the male lead actually makes out with other men, and is even clearly indicated to have been a bottom for another guy. And this without being depicted as a wimp or weakling. If that's not outstanding then nothing is.
i can't....
I hate her too
Gwen is like the most popular girl at school, whom everyone secretly hates. She's a prima donna and yet at the same time extremely needy. She's artificially sweet when in fact she's actually a self-interested bitch. And her hairstyle needs major renovation.
Maybe it's wishful thinking, but it seemed to me that Barrowman was putting more into making Jack show longing for Ianto than for Gwen. Then again, and part of this is Gwen's character, I have always thought that Jack and Gwen's supposed chemistry is very artificial. This is not Moonlighting.
If you don't like Gwen...
If you don't like Gwen... can I have her instead? I think she's adorable (minus the cheating on her boyfriend bit, that is.)
Like the most popular girl at school that everyone secretly hates? Nah, that would be the type that spends a fortune on clothes, handbags and shoes and manages to have anyone who isn't hip enough ostracized.
You're right about her hairstyle, though. Why on Earth did they skip the ponytail after just one episode?

Thanks for Speaking Up for Gwen.
Hi Cherry...It's been awhile. Good to see you.
About Gwen I think she's a good character. Sure she whiney and does everything she's told not to do, but the show wouldn't work without her. You need a foil for Jack and the crew. You need someone to take things personally, like in "Day One." Without Gwen they probably could have just as easily let Clayris die while they got to the alien. That's what Jack sees and probably what he loves about her.
I don't necessarily want Jack to end up with Gwen, but I think we should wait and see what happens; some fabulous alien may come along.
Thanks for the review, Michael. It's a little more objective than Steve's recap.
Janto...
... is what the pairing is called in fandom ;-) I love them together.
I hope we get to see the actual date on screen.
We've just seen episode two
We've just seen episode two now in the UK and I'm loving it just as much as the first series, but then I am utterly biased because I adore John Barrowman and I don't care about the faults in the plots or the dodgy bits.
I understand that the gay audience might be disappointed that Jack does seem to have commitment issues but he is a man who can't die and therefore is going to have to live forever without that person if it gets serious. The only thing that does annoy me slightly is that it's always about Gwen, anybody held hostage, Gwen, anyone knocked out and they can't find her, Gwen, Ianto and monkey boy hardly get a look in sometimes.
I've met John you know, twice, and he's lovely.
*cough*
Oh yeah!
I can't wait untill you lot
