"South Park": A Milestone in Gay Visibility

Butters gives an impassioned speech and convinces Bradley not to jump from the bridge.

Funny rating: 7 Cartmans

Gay rating: 10 Big Gay Als

This last episode is the perfect representation of what makes South Park such a milestone in gay culture. In 22 minutes, it uses biting satire and wit, coupled with a healthy dose of potty mouth to send a message of gay acceptance while taking on one (some?) of the more nefarious anti-gay movements out there. It does more than any heavy-handed drama or sermon could ever do to further our agenda . . . not a "gay" agenda . . . but a "human" agenda.

I love South Park and I'm

I love South Park and I'm glad you wrote this up. I know that we're all about boy-gays on AfterElton, but I'm a tad surprised that the D-yikes! episode didn't get a mention.

Ah, South Park...

I don't get offended by the gay jokes in South Park because they literally make fun of everybody!

Besides, I loved that whole episode with the Queer Eye thing!

the parodies are some of the best

South Park does some of the best parody episodes. the Queer Eye one comes to mind but there's also the ones lampooning Black Hawk Down (Red Sleigh Down), Lord of the Rings (The Return of the Fellowship of the Ring to the Two Towers), and Japanese martial arts anime (Good Times With Weapons).

Scissor me timbers!

Yea D-Yikes is definitely worthy of the list. It's by far my favorite gay episode. Every lesbian I know love it too. Matt and Trey MUST have some lesbian friends because they totally nailed it. If you really needed a gay/bi male reference, it was also a brilliant spoof of the homoerotic/homophobic 300. Everybody wins. Scissor me timbers!

D-yikes was a great episode!

I knew people were going to say "how could you forget so and so episode!" There were other episodes, like D-yikes, that could easily have made the list, but i had to settle on ten. I think the fact that there are so many episodes that people like helps prove how groundbreaking this show is. thanks for the input!

i got frustrated....

by some people (i don't know if they were GLBT) blaming South Park for being anti-gay because of the disparaging remarks made by the boys (Cartman & co.) - the phrase "that's so gay"..... they said South Park popularized that catch phrase and became a favorite derogatory remarks by bullies in high school... although it is used not as a derogatory remark for being actually gay - just that it means that it is lame... but it was still a negative canotation that gays do not need (obviously).... so i am soooo happy that AE featured south park today because how can you say South Park is damaging to us gays when it has been an ally ever since episode one?!?!..... i love south park... even those episodes not mentioned here or are not entirely gay friendly have some gay sensibilities and are all about tolerance and acceptance....(although i have to agree - mrs. garrison is getting quite irritating... not to good for our transgendered family).... still south park rocks!!!! it is not just a milestone for gay visibility but a champion of gay causes as well.

South Park Social Commentary

I have often watched South Park and realized the underlying social commentary that trey and matt sneak in each episode is brilliant. They insult everyone leaving no one safe. I like the 10 episodes that you have showcased.

Mrs Garrison

What did they have a marriage ceremony in the operating room? Yes, She's getting on my nerves very badly. I have quite a few transgendered freinds, and they would love it if they did away with that character altogether. (I mean really, who goes to all the trouble to get a gender reassignment ans stay's looking like a blad man?). one thing, too much video, I live in a part of the country that not even Hughes net will install broadband, so no broadband. I have on-line friends all over the world who can't get it where they live too. please have a little consideration. ThanksAND GIVE US BACK OUR PARAGRAPHS!!!!

Sorry

Mr. Garrison

*SPOILERS* In the most recent episode "Eek A Penis!" ends with Mrs. Garrison going back to being Mr. Garrison. Though with recently becoming a lesbian as a woman his current sexuality as a man again is not determined yet.

Great Moments Within Episodes

Loved this list. I remember when South Park first premiered when I was in sixth grade. My mother forbid me to watch it so I would sneak it late at night when it would rerun. Now, over 10 years later, my whole family enjoys the show and occasionally it is used as family time. I will say one of my favorite moments comes from the "Follow That Egg" when the Governor comes up with a "compromise" on the marriage issue. Instead of being legally married, you will be "butt buddies". And the joke goes on for about three minutes, which was brilliant. Instead of being joined in matrimony, you will be..."butt buddies". And to cap off the joke one half a butch lesbian couple asks, "Well, what about lesbians?" To which the Governor responds, "Like anyone cares about f#*@ing dykes!" HYSTERICAL! Also, an interesting tidbit to remember, is that "Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride" earned the show it's first ever Emmy nomination for Outstanding Animated Program. It lost however to "The Simpsons" for their 200th episode, "Trash of the Titans" which is actually pretty funny. Long live "South Park" and it's wonderfully crude brilliance!!!
