Gay TV Spring Preview

Ugly Betty

Who's gay? Marc St. James (Michael Urie), Cliff (David Blue), Suzuki St. Pierre (Alec Mapa), Alexis Meade (Rebecca Romijn)

When is it coming back? April 24, 8:00 p.m. (ABC)

For how long? 5 episodes

Why you should watch: It's the only show that can compete with Brothers & Sisters for the title of Gayest Show on Network Television. It not only features several openly gay characters, but it has one of only two transgender characters on network TV, and an adolescent character who, while not openly gay, certainly displays a gay sensibility (Justin Suarez, played by the delightful Mark Indelicato). Alas, we’ve been told that the strike-shortened season means we shouldn’t expect to see more of Marc and Cliff's burgeoning romance. Nonetheless, there's still plenty of gay to go around and Ugly Betty should be on every gay boy’s must see TV list.

Work Out

Who's gay? Trainer Jesse Brune, Massage Therapist JD Jordan

When is it coming back? April 15, 11 p.m. and then takes it's normal time slot of 10 p.m. (Bravo)

For how long? Full Season

Why you should watch: Jackie is back with a new girlfriend and a new out gay employee at Sky Sport. JD Jordan is a massage therapist, and based on the first two episodes at least, seems a little more laid back than some of the other employees at Jackie's Beverly Hills gym. JD is one of four new employees this season. Jesse Brune, Jackie's gay BFF, is also back . . . and just as catty as ever.

"It takes a village (to make Village People)"

Not much to look forward to this year, unless House comes through. I love the Scissors Sisters but that shtick with the floppy legs has got to go. And I don't understand why the same people that harp about Torchwood and ATWT aren't up in arms about the sterotypes, both gay and straight, on Ugly Betty: "Why, Betty, when you take off those glasses and those prosthetic teeth, you're bee-yoo-tiful!" If only it worked that way in real life. And if only I could develop a taste for reality TV!

Beautiful Betty

Actually, I think you're missing the point about Ugly Betty. They've never tried to give her a makeover or make her "bee-yoo-tiful." The whole point of the show (in all it's characters, gay, straight or undecided) is that beautiful comes from within and that you be true to who you really are. Betty is already beautiful just the way she is.

And as for real life, I can't tell you how many people I'd like to make over...

You're probably right about "Ugly Betty"; if this site is any indication, she must have a huge fan base.  I am in no position to see the show, although I did watch a couple of episodes early on and I found the stereotypes both anachronistic and painful (not to mention funny).  I did, however, catch America Ferrer on Larry King the other day (she was shilling for Hill).  She had taken off her glasses and prosthetic teeth and--guess what?--she was bee-you-tiful!

Is Katherine Heigl really a gay fave? I personally think she's very overrated and it sucks that she's gotten all the accolades for GA over her superior co-stars (like Sara Ramirez!).

House unfortunately

House unfortunately doesn't have much in terms of gay visibility right now (they did have occasional gay characters before), but one of recurring female characters - House's underling - is bisexual. Let's hope they come through and show her dating woman. I'd love for House/Wilson subtext to become text even more, but it may be too much to hope for. After all, it's a lead of Fox's (sic) top scripted show.

Either way, it's fun and oftentimes intelligent show, and very much worth watching as such.

There might be hope...

The actress who plays 'Thirteen' said in a interview that she'll be revealed to be dating someone unexpected. That was before the viewers discovered she was bi, so I hope it means she is (or will be very soon) dating a woman.

Is it wrong for me to dream it's Cuddy?

Sadly, you're probably right about the House/Wilson dynamic remaining subtext. For a while I was almost certain Wilson would be outed as gay, but somehow the focus on their 'bromance' lately makes me less sure.

Nice Overview...

...of where to find "the gays" on the current TV line-up. I do find it a little disturbing that on a show like Grey's Anatomy, the only gay character is the rarely seen bartender. Not that they're required to feature a more prominent gay character but, come on... this show seems to be cutting edge with showcasing a diverse cast. Couldn't just one of the main characters be GLBT?
