From thirtysomething to Brothers & Sisters

Kevin and Scotty’s wedding has been part of the plan for a while, Grant says, though the writers’ strike earlier this year, which resulted in fewer episodes this season, meant that the storylines had to be told in an abbreviated way. Ironically, he says, the rushed schedule worked dramatically, with Kevin’s sudden proposal to Scotty being more unexpected than if they had built up to it over episode after episode.

How did Kevin end up with Scotty and not Jason, a previous love interest? “As season two evolved, it was clear,” Grant says. “So we really felt that [a wedding] was the best way to close the season.”

“People were really rooting for Scotty and Kevin to get together,” Olin agrees. “And like any love story, you want to make it hard for them to get together. Then ultimately, they get together and you have to explore, okay, now they’re together, now what do we do? That provided more possibilities for a mature exploration of that relationship than continuing to put Kevin with different people, the commitment phobia storyline. We get it. Ten years ago, his commitment phobia probably would have played out for most of the series the way it did for, say, Peter Horton’s character on thirtysomething. In our storytelling, it plays out for maybe 20 episodes.”

As for the actual writing of the wedding episode, “We all helped a bit,” Grant says. “But it was written by Greg and Monica [Breen] and Alison [Schapker]. It was just a joy to behold.”

Grant points to another revolutionary “gay” element in Brothers & Sisters: the character of Saul, a closeted older man, played by Ron Rifkin, who finally admitted to Kevin in the wedding proposal episode that he is, in fact, gay.

“I mean, good grief, how many shows are doing this, a sixty-something year-old man just came out!” Grant says. “I think it’s just great that ABC is letting us do these stories.”

Grant and Olin are tight-lipped about future plot developments on Brothers & Sisters — but mostly because they haven’t been written yet. Berlanti reportedly has the first six episodes of next season mapped out, with the rest to be conceived after a break.

But rest assured, they say, Kevin, Scotty, and Saul will be front and center. “The vibe that I get is that there is just no problem [with gay storylines],” Grant says. In contrast with his six-episode stint on thirtysomething, which resulted in headlines and advertiser defections, “I’m not getting the sense that anybody at ABC is concerned in any way about this, and I’ve not heard anything about advertisers.”

Olin, meanwhile, is delighted by what he sees as the subversive nature of the show’s gay storylines.

“We’ve created these two men [Kevin and Scotty], and you root for them to get together,” he says. “And we’ve created the character of Saul where you spend time rooting for him to find the strength to come out. If you can create that dynamic with the audience, you’ve completely subverted their prejudice without them even knowing it.”

Olin and Grant both love working on the show, and plan to continue the journey. But Olin points out that thirtysomething and Brothers & Sisters aren’t the only times the two friends have worked together.

“I did a play with David, and I actually did a striptease for him,” Olin says.

“A little play called The Fairy Garden,” Grant says with a laugh. “Ken stripped in front of me every night for the love of our little show, down to a g-string, I think. He’s very proud of this.”

Great article

I am so excited about this weeks episode. Bravo again to ABC for showing gay relationships in a most realistic light. May many more series on all the networks become this enlightened. And I agree that Kevin's proposal to Scotty was the most romantic scene I have ever seen on any TV program.

Great interview

Thank you for the wonderful interview. It's great to hear that in season 3, Kevin, Scotty & Saul will get more "front & center" storylines. I'm very happy with this news! :) And I'm happy that ABC has no problems with this storyline. Now, my only qualm is the Justecca crap...but that's for a different thread all together.

"Kevin, Scotty & Saul front & center"

Kong Chang, exactly what I was going to say!

I say great! Only there wasn't any prejudice to subvert to begin with, in my case! I've loved that character (Ron Rifkin, really) from the very start. Even when Saul wasn't yet gay..

Loved the interview! You could sense them being proud and happy to team up again! Can't wait for season 3 now!

Great ideas

"For example, the show’s the most recent episode (that aired on May 4) was originally supposed to end with a scene of Sally Field as matriarch Nora Walker. But when episode director Michael Morris was editing the scenes, he decided the scene with Kevin proposing to Scotty was more powerful, so he switched the last two scenes, resulting in the proposal being the last thing the viewer sees before the end credits."

That explains a lot. I was so confused. It was night when Kevin spoke with Saul. Then it was daylight when Nora learned about Rebecca. Then it was night again when Kevin finally came home. It didn't make sense at all. But I think Morris made the right choice with impact over continuity.

“It’s an extraordinary scene,” Olin says, “the most romantic scene we’ve ever done on the show.”

Hell Yeah!!

OH. MY. GOD!

This was a SPECTACULAR interview! I think Thirtysomething was one of the finest TV shows ever, and has yet to be surpassed in terms of writing, characters, etc. I'm so glad to see Ken Olin & David Marshall Grant carrying the torch into their work on Brothers & Sisters.

And can I just say, Ken Olin is one amazingly enlightened, gay-friendly straight man! I think he deserves one of those "straight heroes" that the Advocate or whoever seem to give out every few issues. What a great record he has for working in & creating gay-themed material. And on a personal note, I hope we haven't seen the last of his character on Brothers & Sisters.

Touched and Anticipating

B&S is, I can't stress enough to my friends, the BEST TV series ever (sorry I was only 7 in 1989 so wouldn't know about thirtysomething). Thanks to all the crew that work so hard on the show, to give us the best they can. They are simply brilliant! Only a few night sleeps to the finale! I have decided not to watch any promo clips so that I can absorb all of the best of the episode. Re: Karen, I agree. But minor correction, the daylight is actually with Nora, Tommy, Sarah & Holly discussing about the merger.

Ken Olin - David Marshall Grant

I used to watch Thirtysomething! Loved it. I really liked Peter Frechette (he seemed to have vanished though) and all the cast!

I love the fact that Ken and David have teamed up for B&S! Love it!

I really liked "Doing Time on Maple Drive". I wasn't surprised to see that it was directed by Ken Olin. And Jim Carrey who I don't really like that much, was fabulous in this movie!

Grant is so hot!

I hate to bring the intellectual level of these comments down a few notches, but I have to say that I saw David Marshall Grant in a coffee shop some time ago and I was shocked by how hot he is. He looks attractive when you see him on TV or in photos, but in person... WOW! He is hotness personified. I know this is a dumb comment, but I just had to make it because it is true and I still wish I had thrown myself at him instead of respecting his privacy at the coffee shop. So there.
