News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

The Best Gay TV Preview Ever!

September 21st

60th Primetime Emmy Awards

What’s it about? Hollywood finally taking the time to turn its gaze inward and recognize its own humble achievements. That still leaves the Fourth of July and Christmas as days when they don’t think about themselves.

Who’s gay? Out actors Neil Patrick Harris and Alan Cumming, and out writer/showrunner Bryan Fuller are all nominated.

When does it air? Sunday at 8 PM on ABC.

Why should you watch? To cheer on the home team, duh! Fuller’s Pushing Daisies racked up 12 nominations and Harris is nominated for his role as the straight Barney Stinson. To see both men on stage accepting their awards would be fantastic. Additionally, Ralph Fiennes, Will Arnett, Oliver Platt, and Zeljko Ivanek are all nominated for gay roles.

Dancing with the Stars

What is it about? B-List celebrities embarrassing themselves to get back in front of the spotlight. Okay, only some of them embarrass themselves, but you know that is why you watch.

Who’s gay? ABC announced yesterday that Lance Bass will be one of this season’s contestants. Not that we’re saying he’s a B-List celebrity or anything.

When does it air? Mondays at 8 PM on ABC.

Why should you watch? We are talking Lance, of course, but we’ll really be interested if they pair him up with a male dancer. It probably won’t happen, but this is ABC so it’s a possibility.

TiVo priority: Lance with a female partner...

How I Met Your Mother

Neil Patrick Harris

What is it about? Ostensibly it’s about learning who the narrator married, but it’s really just Friends redux. Not that that’s a bad thing.

Who’s gay? None of the main characters, but Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) brother James (Wayne Brady) is gay. Oh, yeah, Neil is gay in real life, too!

When does it air? Mondays at 8:30 PM on CBS.

Why should you watch? While never rising to the level of classic sitcoms such as Frasier or Sex and the City, HIMYM is pretty solid. Best of all, it features Harris as the outrageous heterosexual horndog Barney Stinson. He’s easily the best thing on the show and worth tuning in for.
