A Gay Viewer's Guide to the Beijing Olympics

Worst trend
The full-body swimsuit. Swimmers love them because they set world records, but aesthetically they are a disaster. Oh, for the days when everyone wore a Speedo.

Event not to miss: The water polo players and divers stick to the classic skimpy Speedo, so you’ll have to catch swimming in primetime every night the first week of the Games.

Most anachronistic sport
Modern pentathlon. The events are epee fencing, pistol shooting, 200-meter freestyle swimming, show jumping on horseback, and a 3 km cross-country run. Sounds like something out of the 19th century, which it is.

It was invented by Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Games, to simulate the skills needs for a cavalry officer. There have been repeated calls to take it out of the Olympics since it has such a small following. For today’s culture, may we suggest replacing the pentathlon with Wii bowling?

Event not to miss: The women’s event will be broadcast on MSNBC the morning of Aug. 22; for the men, you’ll have to tune in online Aug. 20-21.

Swimming, DIving

and track & field are the events I will be following, with soccer up there as well. It is a pity that the time difference means I will see very few events live, but what the heck as long as I get to see some very sexy athletes in tight fitting sports clothes I will survive. And you are right the replacement of speedos with the bodysuits is a real drag (pardon the pun).

Cheers

Unfortunately, it looks like

Unfortunately, it looks like Morgan Hamm will also be out of the Olympics with bone spurs in his feet, which just sounds awful!

It's True

Morgan will not be performing in the Olympics yet he will be sitting on the sides watching. And from what I gather from an article yesterday (about Morgan) the bones in his ankle are rubbing up against his tibia. This injury is from an old injury that's never gone away.

Morgan Hamm's replacement?

I know that Raj Bhavsar (yum!) took Paul Hamm's place on the team; who will be competing in Morgan's stead?

Watch CBC for Olympic coverage

Americans should tune in to the CBC if they have access. Canadian tv coverage of the Olympics is always more comprehensive than any American stations, at least in terms of the variety of sports covered, if not total hours. The CBC also broadcasts events live, then re-runs them in prime time. I've been watching the opening ceremonies since 7 a.m. EDT but NBC won't be showing it till tonight. I also read that some events not shown on tv will be streamed on CBCSports.ca.

There are definitely a few

There are definitely a few out female USA competitors. I think there's a soccer player and a couple of softball players.
