Emmy Preview: Let the Bitching Begin!

WTF?! Oliver Platt got nominated for that ridiculous gay character he played on Nip/Tuck?! Did the Emmy judges all spill coffee on their ballots?

Well, at least they had the good sense to nominate Pushing Daisies and its out gay creator, Bryan Fuller, who is, I swear to God, the nicest guy in Hollywood.

Let’s face it: Joan Rivers and her ilk might think the best part of any awards show is the fashions, but the rest of us know better: it’s all about arguing over who should and shouldn’t have been nominated — and who should win!

This year, gay viewers have plenty to argue about.

First and foremost, there’s Neil Patrick Harris, who is pretty much the Emmy mascot this year. Not only did he land his second Emmy nomination (for How I Met Your Mother), he announced this year’s nominations, he’ll present an award at this Sunday’s ceremony, and he even co-hosted the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, held earlier.

“They came to me after [Kristin Chenoweth and I] did the announcements for the Emmy nominations,” Harris tells AfterElton.com. “I think they thought she and I had good chemistry and wanted us to do it. Her schedule didn’t allow it, so Sarah [Chalke of Scrubs] gladly joined on. So I think it was from [Kristin and I] putting a little energy into the announcements of the nominees back at three o’clock in the morning or whenever we did that. Which they claim had to do with talent, and I just think had to do with caffeine.”

The most nominated TV program of the year is the HBO movie John Adams, starring gay fav Laura Linney, with an incredible 23 nominations. And I still won’t watch it, because it sounds like a total snooze-fest.

Inexplicably to this gay guy, 30 Rock led the regular series nominations, with a total of 17. That includes an acting nomination for Will Arnett who I guess plays a gay guy. I. Do. Not. Get. This. Show. Eighty percent of the jokes aren’t funny!

Mad Men, which includes a closeted gay character played by Bryan Batt, did almost as well, with 16 nominations. Batt wasn’t nominated, but John Slattery was. I don’t know if Slattery’s a gay fave or not, but I’ve liked him ever since he had the guts to do the “watersports” episode of Sex and the City. Hunkalicious Jon Hamm is up too. And gee, do you think this show, so famously set in the 1960s, will win in the art direction category?
