A Look Back at "Hollyoaks"’ remarkable John Paul McQueenTotal Number of Arbitrary Points Awarded:
Overall Hollyoaks’ Pothole Status: Filled So in the end, Kieron died, Craig came back, and John Paul left the show with his former flame. Some fans may be happy with the result, and some not. But regardless of how it turned out, what remains is two gloriously John Paul-filled years on our TV screens. We’ve watched as J.P. came out, fell in love and to had to say goodbye to his murdered-gay-priest-fiancée at the grave. We’ve watched him snog Craig, Spike, Kieron and Craig again. We’ve watched the little guy grow up.
With John Paul, Hollyoaks managed not only to avoid all of the Gay Pothole stereotypes, but to go even further by making J.P. a complicated, but real character, one with genuine flaws yet ultimately likable. And random extra points awarded here for the additional avoidance of other GPs such as ‘homos and hate crimes’ and ‘homos and hairstyling’. I'd be amiss not to cite Sutton here. The actor delivered a humanizing and brutally honest portrayal of J.P., where viewers could feel his love, his sadness and every emotion in between. John Paul was a true, complex, multi-dimensional, gay character that will be sorely missed. Hopefully he’ll turn up in a towel somewhere again soon.

gay characters in hollyoaks
JP and Kieron - a well rounded relationship?
Thank you for this piece on John-Paul McQueen and James Sutton
Nice review, but why is
But he'll only be back short
Excellent review! I also
Awesome tribute!
Thanks, Dan! Have you ran out of towels yet? I hope JP does!
It was wonderful to watch a gay character and not "the gay". His life is not all about his sexuality..it's about life...it's like everyone else's. Mind you in the soap world, your life is like no one else's, but you know what I mean.
I'm one of those who weren't happy about the ending but that doesn't make me any less appreciative of James Sutton. He's the third of the best threeway on TV - It was impossible not to be compelled in watching his acting chops go hand in hand with the outstanding performance of Jake Hendriks (Kieron) as his lover and the remarkable talents of Barry Sloane (Niall)as his evil brother. Best. threesome. ever.
JP's a character that fell in love, got his heart broken, played the field, gets serious, goes to school, loves music, loves his family, dances funny, drinks milk out of the carton. Yeah, he's a human character.
Just an FYI - Inside Soap Awards 2008
James Sutton, Jake Hendriks and Barry Sloane each made it to the short-list in their prospective nominated categories for this year's Inside Soap Awards, which are being presented next Monday night, September 29th, 2008.
Good luck to them and all the nominees. http://www.insidesoap.co.uk/

Love me less, but love me a long time - Les Chansons D'Amour
James Sutton reads smutty fic on HONAR dressed as "Snow White"
If only NIALL had actually used a "Poisoned Apple" (instead of the poisoned beer).
It would have been TOO MUCH but in a really good way.
At any rate, Here's our James looking ever so sweet.
