Audience Participation: Madonna Opens Her Catalog to "Glee", But Who Should Sing What?

Puck - "Secret"

I’ve never heard such language out of our geek correspondent, Lyle. He normally swears in comic book form. Who knew that suggesting Puck sing “Secret” would be one of his buttons? I thought it was people who used cheat codes and claimed to have beaten a game in one marathon session.

Yeah, no iconic images in this video. But she frequently has hot shirtless guys walk through.

In any case, this choice is story dependent as it really depends on how widely known it has become that he’s the daddy of Quinn’s baby by the time this episode airs. But the song has been performed beautifully with just an acoustic guitar before, and while some verses aren’t applicable, enough are to arrange a 90-second number.

Conclusion

So those are the choices that didn’t get shredded at the staff meeting. Our understanding is that the ink isn’t even dry on the Madonna contract yet, so I doubt Ryan Murphy has scripted anything yet. Maybe your idea will be the one he uses? Maybe one of mine? Maybe maintenance will get the holes in the walls patched before our next meeting when we get together to discuss your selections.

Sound off!

Mercedes on...

Like a Prayer. For no other reason than that I think she could take that song to a whole 'nother level...and she wouldn't even need the gospel choir.

Take A Bow for Quinn

...or Emma. Or Kurt.

Okay, it's obvious I'm just trying to work my favorite Madonna song into the episode, but depending on how their storylines go, it could fit with quite a number of them.

Actually, Take a Bow

would be great for Quinn! I couldn't think of anything for her. Bueno, Jamie!

You Must Love Me

Jane Lynch would KILL that song! You can just see everything falling apart around her and just break out in a very emotional number. I think it would be best suited for Janes stong vocals. Am I crazy or does You Must Love Me just scream Sue Sylvester??

Wait...

... we have meetings????

I'll have to remember not to watch

I'll have to remember not to watch that episode. I don't get anything about Madonna. I think i've only liked maybe one song of hers and that's it.

...plus, I still have no idea why people call her 'madge'

Vogue

I was happy that you mention Vogue but Mercedes and Kurt aren't exactly in the Cheerios and Football teams are they?
giovannif7's picture

Hardly logical, I know -

I just want to see the football players and Cheerios Vogue-ing, and I figure Kurt and Mercedes would know the basics. Using Glee logic, it wouldn't be too tough to make it happen - a school dance, a new exercise program, or just a Madonna Day event at the school.

To Celebrate their Judaism and Madonna's Embrace of it...

...Rachel and Noah/Puck should sing ISAAC.

And Jenna Ushkowitz can definitely sing that G in GLEE's version of TONIGHT from WEST SIDE STORY. That's just a scripted "fluke" to make Rachel look and sound like a better singer than Tina.

Madonna songs on Glee

These choices are lame. There has to be some connection between a character, their storyline and the song. For instance how about a Rachel/Emma "Crazy for You" duet dedicated to Finn and Will, but it's not just them performing the song together, but a split screen dream sequence kind of thing. Papa Don't Preach is a no-brainer for Quinn.
David N's picture

I like the idea of Finn/Puck duet

I think it would be perfect for the two of them to do Papa Don't Preach as a duet. Puck out on the football field, and Finn most likely in the glee rehearsal room. Both of them want to do the right thing.

This would have to be before poor Finn learns a bit more about the birds and the bees. Once he figures out he's not the baby daddy he's not going to be a happy boy.

Quinn for Like a virgin

I think it would make perfect sense for Quinn to sing 'like a virgin', given her background as the leader of the celibacy club. Mercedes would do a great job of 'Papa dont preach', I think that song would sound better with her than with Rachael. Just on a side note, didn't Moulin Rogue cover a lot of Madonna songs.

Frozen, etc.

Someone in the love triangle (well, more of a square, now) should deliver a heart-broken rendition of Frozen. Or maybe Emma.

Quinn could try Material Girl.

And that gorgeous Latina Cheerio who's only had one line might break out with La Isla Bonita.

Spoiler

Dianna Agron mentioned in a very recent interview that there is going to be a madonna song in episode 10. Not sure if it`s just Quinn or a group number or something.

Edit:

It is confirmed to be "Papa Don't Preach".

Like a prayer for Mercedes

Loleatta Holloway did a cover version for the "Virgin Voices" Madonna tribute CD. Mercedes could probably top her. Rachel: Borderline Puck and Rachel as a split screen duet suggested by others: Burning up or Open your heart...maybe both as a mash up!!! Kurt: Get into the Groove or I love New York Artie: Human Nature Quinn: I know it or Live to tell

Borderline

Somebody should sing Borderline. Rob Thomas slowed it down and sang it with just a piano and it was eerily awesome.

Vogue

I can see Rachel getting something like Hung Up referring to her non-relationship with Finn, and maybe she's trying to move on. I see Papa Don't Preach going to Quinn, because clearly whole baby swap business is not going to happen, this isn't The Young and the Restless. I feel like it's going to come to a head when Quinn decides she wants to keep her baby. She could sing that whole verse, "He says that he's going to marry me, and we can raise a little family...." and it could really be about Finn or Puck depending on whether or not Finn's found out the baby isn't his.

Okay, so Like a Prayer might not go over so well considering it's supposed to be a high school, but they have to work in Vogue and Express Yourself. And I would love to see someone sing Take a Bow, but I get hung up on that line, "You took my love for granted."I can't think of anyone that really applies to.

And of course, Kurt needs a song, because it's the Madonna episode. Material Girl would be good, or Vogue like someone else said.
