Brothers & Sisters (4.07) "The Wig Party" Recap
The next morning, we have Kevin and Scotty talking about Papa Wandell's affair. Scotty’s not mad about the affair; he’s mad that his dad waited until now to stand up to his homophobic mother, and to take care of himself. He’s not ready to face dad when the doorbell rings, but since it’s just a package from dad, he’s safe.
Comic book guy from The Simpsons just wet himself. Turns out it’s a 1940’s Captain America comic book to help pay for the surrogacy. Kevin wants to know the value of the comic book, but Scotty gets that the gift of the book is worth much more than the $20,000+ Google tells me it’s worth. Am I the only one that’s finding it hysterical that the boys are financing their child with a bachelor pad and a comic book?
This is from the beginning, but I couldn't fit their kiss in anywhere else. So it wasn’t a groundbreaking episode, but it was sweet seeing them write in a family for Scotty, and taking a realistic view at the toll homophobia can take on a family. And the price of a family member having cancer. The themes are getting more unified, and we didn’t see Holly or Ryan at all. I’m good with that. What about you guys? Brothers and Sisters
I liked it. There was a lot of Walker interaction, and no Holly and especially no Ryan.
Still do NOT like the gayby storyline. If you have to jump through this many hoops to pay for surrogacy, maybe that should be a sign that you need to wait until finances are in better shape, especially considering the cost of a baby in it's first year. However, Scotty's dad giving a collector's item like that to his gay son so he can pay for a surrogate to have a baby with his husband is pretty cool. And that is a sentence you don't normally see in regards to a mainstream TV show, so kudos to B&S and ABC.
Nora was fine, although that was quite to hoity-toity fundraiser for her Ronald McDonald House. Should be fun to see her dating a younger man (boy, my memory of him was from 15+ years ago, and he's aged....as have we all).
Kitty. Not much to say here. I'm not so sure I wouldn't feel the same way if chemo made me feel like hell.
Robert. Really, if he's going to be a Republican, then let him be a Republican. He sounded just like a Democrat, and Kevin like a Republican. Next you'll tell me that the Earth is rotating backwards. Where was the person who filmed their confrontation and put it up on YouTube? And since when is Kevin his campaign manager? As his Senate press aide, Kevin would not be allowed to have any part of his campaign for Gov. Frustrating storyline I wish would go away.
Justecca. Who didn't see this coming from a mile away? Not just one, but two TWO! baby storylines in one season. At this rate, next year we'll have baby storylines for Nora and Holly. I wish they would get over this crutch of baby storylines. They're overdone and boring as hell.
Why was Gilles in this episode again? I'm not complaining, but he was woefully under-used and over-clothed.
A Very Special Scotty Segment

If I bring out the devil in you, he was there all along!
Legally married Sept 18, 2009. Wedded Oct 10,2009.
wait, so rebecca....
wait, so rebecca ISN'T pregnant?
I still bet she will be by the end of the season and i also bet they will make a bigger deal out of her and justin having a baby then kevin and scotty
Rebecca
Yes, she is. After conveniently expounding about how "now isn't a great time for a baby", Justin left, and then she held out the home pregnancy test wand, and we could clearly see the + sign.
She's preggers. Somebody get me the smelling salts, I think I might faint from the unexpectedness of it all.
i called it months ago.
i called it months ago. i just knew it had to happen eventually.
Rebecca's baby
Nice to see some focus on Scotty
I actually wasn't bothered by Scotty seeming confused with finances. This show already has one person who inexplicably went from having no skills, to becoming a financial wizard, to apparently having no fiscal common sense again (Holly). It's enough that Scotty graduated chef school in like three months. It would be all-out bizarre if he's branched out into finance as well. There has to be some level of realism.
But it was great to give him some attention. Truthfully I'm not surprised that his parents split up. Bertha was visbily a raging bitch both times we saw her. Remember that she had no problem with being shockingly rude, even in front of Kitty and Robert. I can only imagine what she was like in the privacy of the home! That her need to find fault with everything in the world finally drove Wally to seek a more bearable woman should surprise nobody except Phyllis Schlafly.
Hopefully we'll see more of Wally. His presence on the show would be at least as justified as David's.
Kevin being both a Senate staffer and a campaign manager is just a recurring continuity gap, since Kitty did the same when Robert ran for president. But I actually think his behavior makes sense given lawyerly tendencies towards limiting verbal statements.
What I think that some people might have missed is that Robert was all worked up over his opponent's racism because Robert now has a black son. That would inevitably make him more conscious of racial politics because he is no longer insulated within an all-white family. Granted Robert always seems too liberal to be a Republican. But in this case he would be expected to be prickly.
As for Kitty, finally some good drama! She's been annoying for a while fretting over immaterial things that it's nice that her storyline has gotten truly serious. Not sure if the shaving was done in CGI or for real but it was an excellent scene and I think it would have been a cop-out to have Kitty undergoing chemo and not losing her hair. This just helps make the cancer storyline much more tangible and less abstract (especially since Callista Flockhart has always looked ill anyway).
So last night was definitely an up-arrow in my book.
Scotty.
I liked the little focus on Scotty (enjoy it, it's probably 'once only'.)
And yes, I do hope we get to see Wally more often. This new girl-friend seemed willing to meet Scotty, even though Scotty wasn't ready to meet her. That IS a point scored by her.
But I hope we will also see Bertha again. True, she's a very bitter woman, but at the same time, her reaction towards Kevin/Scotty is a good counter-balance to Nora's so accepting nature. Maybe she could even try to take a little step in the right direction. Not the a whole turn-around, but just a little de-frosting.
I've given up on Kevin, whenever he's around Robert, the black hole. In all honesty, I think Kevin should simply give up giving advice, lawyerly or otherwise. No one is listening to him anyway. Whatever practical, sensibel thing he says, they Walkers and McCallister always do the opposite. I know... drrrrama, but still it's tiresome.
Yup, Robert was definitely
