New “EastEnders”' Character (Finally) Brings Diversity to Soaps

“It’s just you and me,” Christian told Syed in October. But Syed responded, “It’s never just you and me though, is it? God will always know.”

At one point, Syed visited an imam, who told him, flat-out, that homosexuality is unacceptable.

Still, the show has occasionally tried to take a lighter approach to the controversial storyline. “I guess I’m going to have to get used to another woman in your life,” Syed’s mother, who’s been busy trying to set him up with girls, told him recently.

“Never,” Syed responded ironically.

"We've always tried to make EastEnders reflect modern life in multicultural Britain, and we've always told social issue stories relevant to our diverse audience,” executive producer Diederick Santer told the U.K. newspaper The Sun. "To all intents and purposes, Syed's a 'good' Muslim man — he doesn't drink, smoke, or engage in sex before marriage. But he struggles with his sexuality when he finds himself drawn to Christian, and he believes this goes against his faith."

Gay Muslim or Middle Eastern characters anywhere on television are rare on both sides of the pond, but they’ve turned up recently in such American shows as The War at Home, Sleeper Cell, and Nurse Jackie.

What?!

Oh ok. The 'good' is in inverted commas. 'Cause the guy had plenty of sex before marriage, I'd say! ;o)

Been there, done that..

With closet cases with Hindu, Jew, Muslim and a few more no doubt. Its emotionally draining if you care about the person and unlike soap land were this will be wrapped up be the end of the year the reality is more like years to come out, Its the culture and family they are scared to loose just as much if not more so than the religion its self.

The story on "easties" is interesting but its just not done well enough to address any of the issues at hand let alone make the two men seem to atleast love each other.

Just like the actors on

Just like the actors on ATWT, these two actors are continually pimping the greatness of their storyline, but I find it almost impossible to watch. These are a couple of loathesome characters. Syed is self-absorbed and callously cruel and Christian is just pathetically weak and needy. How many times have we seen hims standing there with a pained look on his face as Syed talks to Amira about their "perfect" wedding plans? He behaves like the quintessential battered spouse. He will take any amount of cruel, abusive behavior to be with the man he "loves". Yuk! Grow a spine, Christian, and move on to someone more worthwhile.

Eastenders

I think Syed portrays very well the struggle and conflict that a Muslim man must face especially if he is also conflicted about his sexuality. While religion in Western society can be very tough on Gay people, in the Muslim / Islam world the revelation of one's sexual orientation as being Gay can and does result in either severe beatings, incarceration or death. As his love for Christian develops and grows deeper, he is going to have to come clean very soon with Ameera and his family and with his living in Britain (supposedly where the story is based) he may fair better then were he to be living in the Middle East or some other Muslim / Islam dominated society. The love story between Syed and Christian is a excellent story, for some it may seem that it is being dragged out and of course for some it is very controversial. But, considering the background of Syed and his family, it is definitely a story that does need to be told especially for the Muslim Community, a community that does not recognize or accept any other sexual activity than between a man and a woman.
