Gay-themed ads: The good, the bad, and the WTF?

We seriously don't know what to make of this Degree commercial. It goes from surreal (with the pink and blue stream) to full on gay panic at the end. Who were they targeting with this, Austin Powers? Because it's just so bizarre, it earns out first "WTF?" rating.

Would we buy what they're selling? Personally, we'd be more concerned if we started peeing blue and green then if another guy was whizzing beside us, and we don't think there's enough Degree in the world to handle that stress.

Guinness

Opinions vary wildly about this famously unaired commercial. When word leaked in the UK that Guinness had made a gay ad, the company feared a straight backlash and pulled it before it hit TV. The idea of such blatant wife/husband roles in gay relationships is a hoary old cliche, but because the commercial is a takeoff on 50's households, we can see where they were going with it (and the "reveal", with the peck on the cheek and the coffee cup mishap left us with a goofy grin on our faces).

What we can't fathom is the line "not everything in black and white makes sense". Until that head-scratching denouement, the ad had its heart in the right place. Because the commercial works until the final five seconds, we're giving it a positive three out of five Levis.

Would we buy what they're selling? Wait a minute, what are they selling? Oh yeah, it's a beer commercial.

MTV

While it's true that MTV is responsible for unleashing The Hills and TRL on an unsuspecting world, they also deserve kudos for treating their gay audience as matter-of-factly as their straight viewers. This wonderful promo is a great example. A tearful youth records a break-up mixtape as the camera pans over to reveal that the former object of his affection is another boy. No words are necessary as this ad makes it clear that heartbreak is heartbreak no matter what your sexuality, and because of the simplicity and universality of the message, it ears a solid four out of five Levi's.

Would we buy what it's selling? It's MTV, so we try to catch The Real World when it has gay roommates, but other than that, we really have no interest in whether Tila Tequila finds love.
