The Top 15 Favorite Gay Reality Stars

#14 Dale Levitski
Appeared on: Top Chef: Chicago

Dale Levitski wasn’t the first gay man to make it to the final three of Bravo’s Top Chef (that honor went to Dave Martin in Season One), but he was the first to do it sporting a faux-hawk. Dale finished second and many thought he should’ve won outright. But the Chicago native finished first in the hearts of much of the gay community, especially since he busted many stereotypes, such as the idea that all gay me are fashionable, stylish and obsessed with appearance. In our first interview with Dale he told us, “You should see my apartment. Disaster! I can't dress myself, I have a gay birth defect for style and fashion . . . I think that belching and farting are the funniest things on the planet. My gay card has been suspended many times.”

How could you not love that?

Levitski didn’t respond to our requests for comment on making this list.

#15 Marcellas Reynolds
Appeared on: Big Brother

In the world of cutthroat reality competition shows, there aren’t many much more ruthless than Big Brother. And that makes it all the more extraordinary that Marcellas Reynolds not only made it to week 9 of Big Brother 3, but that he was evicted only after giving up the Power of Veto (the only House Guest to ever do so until Season 8) in order to spare a housemate from having to make a difficult decision. But Marcellas remained popular with viewers, returning to host a Big Brother call-in show and to be invited back to participate in Big Brother: All Stars.

Marcellas is more than just a reality star, however, and has earned a reputation as a model, fashion stylist, art director and journalist, having appeared on The Tyra Banks Show, The Style Network’s How Do I Look and MTV’s From G’s to Gents.

What was the best part of your experience? The best part of this journey is all the people I've met and all the positive feedback I get from fans of Big Brother and all the other shows I've done.

How did it change you?
The biggest change is knowing exactly what I want to do with my life. Before Big Brother I was a little lost. After I got really focused.

What are you doing now? I've done a lot of things. Been actor/model/whatever, but doing Big Brother led me to this. I'm a writer and TV host. That's what I want to do.

Your reaction to making the list? I'm thrilled to make the list. It's nice to know I'm still relevant!

Woot!

I have to say this list is not all that bad. With the exception of Ronnie ranking higher than Christian, I would say this list was perfect. Although at the same time, it makes me sad seeing such an imbalance to fictional shows. I mean, here's a list of fifteen great stories to tell, yet no self-respecting television producer would bring themselves to create such shows? Just more recognition of the injustice in Hollywood...

What -- No Lance Loud?

(sigh) Guess y'all are too young. Lance was the Marie Curie of Reality Television.

Young gays today...

I don't know what the world is coming to when I find myself getting miffed about a top reality TV stars article, but that some guy I've actually never even heard of has beaten Pedro does piss me off.

Young gays today...are great! I was surprised Pedro didn't top

the list but being beaten by Danny Roberts is nothing to be upset about. Danny also used his time on The Real World to bring an important gay issue -- Don't Ask/Don't Tell -- to the forefront of the public consciousness. And by allowing his relationship with his military boyfriend on the airwaves to be broadcast he normalized same-sex relationships and gave millions of young gay men -- including Neil Patrick Harris -- a role model they could identify with. And after The Real World, Danny continued to use his fame to help gay issues.

I certainly don't mean to

I certainly don't mean to suggest Danny isn't a nice guy or hasn't done great things with the attention he received...

but to beat out Pedro?  Come on, now...

I know, I know, the votes are what they are...

Pedro made a PROFOUND impact on my generation.  Danny didn't have nearly the same impact.

Pedro should be #1...

I won't knock Danny Roberts, cause I don't really know who he is.  I kind of remember hearing about him & his bf, but in 2000 I was 29, and too old for MTV, and I had been put out to the pasture that was VH1.

But let's look at your argument for Danny being #1.

Brought an important gay issue to the forefront of public consciousness.  Pedro - AIDS - check.

Allowing his relationship with his boyfriend on the airwaves to be broadcast he normalzed same-sex relationships and gave millions of young gay men a role model they could identify with.  Pedro - relationship with Sean, including getting Married! - check.

So, with everything that Danny had done, which sounds like really great things and he should be on the list, Pedro had also done, just 6 years earlier.

I didn't say I thought Danny should

be number one. Just that I didn't think it was fair to make it sound like young gay guys were flakes or ignorant for voting for Danny or that Danny wasn't a worthy candidate.

I stand corrected

You didn't say that he should be #1, my apologies.

I'm sure there were many people voting that were too young in 1994 to be impacted by Pedro.  I just know how much of an impact he had on my life, and still to this day can't even see a clip of him without getting emotional.

Pretty good list

It is very nice to see a favourite gay list with such diversify - several latino and one african-american.I was hoping Brad from Survivor could make it since he might be the only asian gay reality person who might have a shot, but oh well.

This list is gay.

No Lance Loud? A list of gay reality stars without Lance is like a list of queer television moments that doesn't include Ellen's "coming out:" a completely ill-researched compilation of...crap. No Norman Korpi? How could you possible put Danny (the cheating boyfriend) above Norman? He's the original RW queer and me being 28 (younger than Neil Patrick Harris by far) found Norman a far better and much more courageous gay role model than the monogamy/height-challenged Danny could ever be. How unfortunate that this list seems to perpetuate gay stereotype and be much more based on aesthetics (sorry Dale, it's true) than the actual influence these men had on queer history.

This list is a poll

Obviously, more people voted for Danny Roberts than the ones you mentioned. People vote for their favourites for different reasons. You obviously do not like Roberts, though I am unsure why you would make an issue of his height.

I'm way more concerned that you chose to perpetuate the use of the word "gay" to mean "bad".

Are you kidding me?

Apparently not that many people have a long term memory. Not only did they overlook the the very forthright Lance Loud, but to leave Jack Mackenroth and his brave struggle off in favor of the contentious, vulgar (not to mention criminal) Richard Hatch is a total shocker. Just because he won and was gay is not enough to place him on this list. He's not a good role model for any one. The only reality stars worse than Richard Hatch would have to be Puck, Pedro's nemesis from REAL WORLD: SAN FRANCISCO and the ultimate gross out reality star title has to go to Evil Dick from BIG BROTHER. With his smarmy daughter thrown in secnd for icing on that cake. I think, however, we will soon be able to add Adam Lambert to this list, as if the Burning Man pictures weren't enough proof.

That's all I am saying...

Proof of what

Maybe is my bad english, but i don't undestand you. What exactly proof Adam lambert's pics at burning man?

It's not a list of best gay role models

The only criteria, other than being gay/bisexual males and reality show participants, is that the nominees be "favorites". In defining favorite, I sure some people look at what the individuals have done outside their reality shows while some only consider them in the context of those shows.Difficult as it may be to believe, there are folks who liked how Richard Hatch played the game on Survivor.

Pedro made me proud

He will always be number one for me! I remember being so saddened by his passing. If he had lived I'm sure his impact would have been astonishing.

I don't watch reality

I don't watch reality shows, so I don't know who most of these people are. LOL! I only know Richard Hatch because he was in the news a lot. Same goes for Clay.

Sarcasm ahead

I'm pretty disappointed that James Getzlaff (Boy Meets Boy) didn't make the list. That show did so much to advance the gay movement.
Dermie's picture

Reichen is "currently" playing Trevor?

Reichen mentions his role as Dante's Cove as one of his "current" activities--does that mean that Dante's Cove IS officially back for a 4th season, or is that still up in the air?
Rob Smith's picture

Davis Mallory?

Ugh. Double, triple, quadruple YUCK. If ever there were a gay man on reality TV to teach people exactly what NOT to be, he was it. Yikes. And I know Danny's really cute and all, but to beat out Pedro? No words.
pecola's picture

I'd probably have more to

I'd probably have more to say about the list were it not for this answer from Danny Roberts:
Your reaction to being named our reader's #1 favorite gay reality star?
It's the most flattering honor I’ve ever received and I'm still in a bit of denial. I know most younger people today don't remember Pedro, but what he did was revolutionary and selfless so I have to share the honor with him. He was making an effort to make a difference and I was just being filmed. There's a huge difference there.

What a wonderful show of humility from Danny and what a great tribute to Pedro.

Ungracious

Clay Aitken comes accross as such an ungracious ass-hat.

I know you can't comment about his attitude, but really, do we actually want someone on our team who so very obviously is still pissed that we all know he's gay.

And was he more pissed off that he was on the list, or that he wasn't *higher* on the list?
