Is America Ready for a Gay "Idol"?

Does all of this uncertainty about Adam mean that he has significantly less of a chance of grabbing the title than Kris? Or have American Idol voters evolved enough since the show’s U.S. premiere seven years ago that even a Goth stud like “Glambert” has a chance of winning?

Simon Cowell definitely seemed to think so as he's cheered Adam on and recently told TV Guide that he has ‘never had an issue’ with the contestant’s sexuality (whatever it may be), noting that Adam’s presence was a ‘huge step forward’ for the show.

However, some have expressed doubt over the public’s seemingly unwavering support for the Idol contestant who was the frontrunner from the very beginning. Specifically, it is worth pointing out that there are usually as many votes cast in Idol finales as there are in U.S. presidential elections. And like any presidential candidate, to win Idol, the nominee will require a percentage of votes from some of the most evangelical, straight-laced, Bible-quoting areas out there.

To assume that many of these people would support a flamboyant and androgynous, spandex-wearing idol candidate (gay or straight) requires a lot of wishful thinking. On the contrary, one would assume that Kris Allen, an Arkansas native known for his missionary work around the world, is more likely to mobilize this section of the population.

And since Danny Gokey (pictured, right), who was eliminated last week, is also a devout Christian, it’s not hard to imagine many of his supporters switching their support to Kris. Given that Ryan Seacrest said a million votes out of the 88 million cast separated Adam and Kris last week, it’s not difficult to see how Kris might take the title.

On the other hand, Guy Trebay in the New York Times pointed out that America is at a point in time where it is becoming more socially liberal. He points out how traditionally conservative-leaning states such as Iowa and New Hampshire have recently advanced GLBT civil rights. And while recent studies still show that America is a very religious country, the heartland has not only become more secular, but younger Americans in particular (who still tend to be religious) have become less rigid in their beliefs.

Arguably, these socio-political developments could suggest that Middle America might be at a crossroads, which makes the outcome of this competition harder to guess than ever before.

Sexual preference aside, the stage is now set for one of the most interesting Idol showdowns of all time. Never before have two contestants been so musically and aesthetically different. Undoubtedly, the world will be waiting with bated breath for the results, whatever they may be.

Bill O'Reilly will take another swipe at Adam Monday night

Unfortunately, O'Reilly will be weighing in on this very subject Monday night (great timing, huh?), with a segment on how Christianity influences American Idol. The ad for it showed a clip of Adam singing. So this will likely be a double whammy. Don't vote for him because he's gay AND Jewish. Ick. I can only hope that this backfires big time.

Finally

You're the first person I've even heard MENTION Adam's Jewish heritage.  The anti-semitism is exrremely prevalent here, but again we Jews are staying silent.  Not making waves.  The story of my family's life.  And the pushing of the Christian issue is just thinly veiled anti-semitism, but it's still quite there.  I guess the gay issue is more exciting because people equate gay with sex.  Thanks for pointing out both issues.  I think many people have forgotten or ignored the former.

This is STRANGE!

Where is this going? Ya think this is another Prop 8 vote that all gays should rise up and smite the foe if Adam loses? Quite frankly my dears - I don't give a damn. Holy shit - you got two guys who I think are both talented and a vote mechanism that is worse than the chads in FL. So - the most people who vote the most times determine the best? Crappy politics and totally meaningless if Adam wins.

Well. . . the Adam Phonomemon from my POV

I get the exasperation. I never watched American Idol pre-Adam and I probably never will after this season. It's an insane amount of hubub for a TV show. BUT: the reality is that Adam has become relevant for a lot of people for a mix of reasons that include his considerable talents, his self-aware, but not self-conscious personality, and his sexuality. He is very Now and his presence on this too-popular TV show has struck a powerful chord culturally. (Maybe it is in part a misplaced reaction to Prop 8, I don't know).

I don't dislike Kris Allen at all.  However, I do see red knowing that people actively vote against Adam. There are plenty of hate messages tearing into him. Some attack his sexuality and choices of self-expression directly. Others attack everything about him except his sexuality, so it's like the elephant in the room. I like him first and foremost as a performer, but I've also come to feel protective of him because he's a target now.   I don't know, I'm a gay man almost exactly Adam's age and there is something very powerful for me in the way that Adam is Adam in the otherwise pretty off-putting and sterilized universe of American Idol. I can't justify it beyond that.

But, according to people who've watched the show for years, hysteria always mounts in the final weeks.  So this is two cultural phenomena knocking heads: Adam Lambert and American Idol.

I understand that it's a matter of contention at what point a person is out of the closet.  Personally, I cannot ever agree with the SOP heterosexual until proven otherwise.

But what about the easily accessible video of Adam on youtube talking about a girl he had to kiss on stage?  He makes a big production out of the fact that he "[got] to kiss those lips and while it's not necessarily [his] preference, it was really nice".  That's a direct quote.

I don't see how he needs to say anything more.  He's out, for all intents and purposes.  No need for a magazine cover.

I just don't assume anything at all

I usually tend to believe what the artist say (even when there are a lot of examples of lies, Anthony Callea or Clay Aiken are good examples). And recently i read some interviews of an actor, in all he said that he wants to find a lovely girl and have a lot of children, but the truth is that i can't believe him and i don't know why (well i have a female friend who is a hardcore fan of this actor, and she is in a forum dedicated to him, and all the female fans of the forum think that he is gay too)

But sometimes what they said it's not really what they said but what the journalist want him to be said. I remeber a case of a spanish idol who made a videoclip for his song (a really awful song) kissing a boy and a girl, but when he was requested about his sexual orientation he refused to answer in all interviews, except in one when he said that he was completly straight. The curious thing is that he made more interviews and in all of them he said the same, that his private life it's private and not answer the question. So i really believe that the journalist of the magazine write what he wants. And as some magazines are interested in making all people coming out of the closet, there are others that want to straight up all people.

Will Adam Win

That's a really difficult question to answer. Why you ask. There are just way too many variables (i.e. voters ) out there. I am in the camp that leans to the side that say's he won't win ( I hope I'm wrong ) just because I have heard first hand from some "Christians" are voting against him not because he is a better singer but because they perceive him to be gay. People are going to vote in large numbers this year on that perception and forget that this is a singing contest.

That being said, will it be good for Adam if he doesn't win. That's a bit easier to answer. Absolutely. Adam will have a bigger career than probably any of the others. How big will be determined by his choices on where to put his talents. What type of career does he want. Does he just want to be a singer (doubtful as we know he's done some theater).

Here is my prediction, he will put out an album that will have pretty good numbers. He'll then hit up Broadway or find a movie roll that will fit him to a T. Adam will be around for a long time. (Longer than most idol winners... Ruben who?, Fantasia ?, The Soul Man Hicks. you get the picture.)

Adam is like Chris Daughtry and knows his strengths (Chris never wanted to be just a singer, he enjoyed the band experience and it fits perfectly for his genre.) Whatever happens on Wed. We know a few things. A star was Discovered. Simon will say I told you so. And we'll wonder what TV we'll gravitate to til the next season begins.

How to win a singing competition

"Christians" are voting against him not because he is a better singer but because they perceive him to be gay. People are going to vote in large numbers this year on that perception and forget that this is a singing contest.

IMO this is exactly the reason Adam and the producers have been playing the gay card pretty close to the chest. Let the cat completely out of the bag and everyone will forget it's a singing competition. Frankly I've been impressed with the way Adam's been able to present himself truthfully on show and let the focus stay primarily where it belongs - and where it has stayed for the other contestants (with the exception of the windower Cokey) - on the performance.

Maybe Adam shouldn't win

I agree with you completely.  It might be best if Adam doesn't win--I don't know how much control they maintain if they win and producers like Clive Davis or Simon Cowell can make even the most interesting artist bland and dull.
bambino italiano's picture

At this stage , it's no longer a singing contest.

Give it to America, whenever something or someone becomes a major media coverage, it becomes political. Regardless if Adam is gay or not, he is in the eyes of the public! He is the representation of the gay community, he is the focal point of same sex marriage and prop 8. This is how the right wings fight their fight. Any which way they can to defeat any kind of civil rights movement. The right wings real political representatives were soundly beaten in the last election. States after states legalized same sex marriage. That's why we have the miss California fiasco, a beauty pageant become the tool for the like of religious right used against the gay communities. Yes, I enjoy nothing but an amateur competition. New talents that entertain me for a few months and nothing more. But guess what? These people manage to turn Mighty Mouse to a cocaine addict and hand bag carrying Teletubbies and Sponge Bob into gay characters. It would be fine if they are speaking from a mental institute and are heavily medicated and guarded from society, but they are not . These people have the power and organization skills to regularly sabotage and erode basic human rights in the country. No it's not about Adam and Kris any more, their pure intention of making a career in the entertainment industry has been hijacked by these unscrupulous Neanderthals. Evolution obviously did not happen to certain species of human kind. So are we voting for Adam because we truly believe he has the most talent between the two or we are voting for Adam to make a political statement?

He is NOT being coy

Queries by journalists have been met with vague answers such as ‘I know who I am … and I’m just going to keep on singing. ’

This is actually very misleading - you guys should know better! At a press event before the Top 13 even started, he was asked, on camera, about those pictures of him kissing a guy, and that's when he gave the above response, which has sadly been regurgitated time and again as if he keeps saying it, when he only said it once.

The contestants and their families (all of them - not just Adam) are not allowed to conduct any interviews while they are still on the show. Period.

He has not even had the opportunity to be asked any of these ridiculous questions, so how is it that he is supposedly hiding anything? To say he is being coy is fundamentally unfair.

Adam Is Not Being Coy - AGREED!

Adam Lambert shouldn't be held responsible for what people write about him or how they write about him or what they call him when they write about him.

He's always seemed humble and kind and not cocky or overly confident during the judging, the backstage videos and when talking to Ryan Seacrest.

He's supposed to appear confident and bigger than life on stage. That's his job.

But I haven't seen any evidence of his being some huge overwhelming pressence at all when not on stage.

If he's single, is he supposed to have a montage of him being gay and single? Everyone know's he's gay. Anyone who looked into his existence pre AI would see. What is there to say about it?

What do performers who aren't married and don't have boyfriends or girlfriends show about their personal lives?

Until the competition is finished, no one has any idea what Adam Lambert has to say about anything that's been going on because he'd under contract.

There are going to be folks who vote against him because he's gay and there will be the "gentle homophobes" who defiantly deny he's gay because they don't want their fantasy man to be gay. Either way, it has nothing to do with him or anything he does on stage.

Adam Lambert is no more flamboyant than most of the dudes in alternative rock and pop rock bands out for the last 10 years. Line them up, Green Day, Fallout Boy, Good Charlotte, they've got Emo Hair and Guyliner and crazy shiny suits on the Grammy and MTV red carpets.

If he "looks gay" then all of those other boys "look gay" as well, if not gayer.

I'm still trying to understand what is so "flamboyant" about decending a staircase. People do it all the time in stage shows. Men, Women, Gay, Straight. It's about creating a dramatic entrance.

And he looked gorgeous, it fit the song, it was in keeping with the "Sammy Davis Jr ish"spirt, so I don't see the problem.

This is my first season watching but I'd always assumed this show is supposed to be about who has Giant Pop Star potential.

Kris and Adam are both really good but they are two completely different kinds of performers/singers and it's crazy that they are even being compared to each other.

Adam is more of a "Justin T", "Usher", "Britney", "Pink" type

Kris is more of a "John Mayer", "Jack Johnson", "KT Tunstall", "Sarah Mclaughlin" type

If there is the vast

If there is the vast conspiracy against Adam, how has he made it further than eleven other people? Yes, there are some people who are voting against Adam because they think he is gay, but this is not a big group. Most people don't know or care about his sexuality, and if he loses, it will be because they like Kris' voice over his. Despite what some people have said, Kris does have a big fan base, and he has millions of people voting for him, because they like him. It has nothing to do with wanting to hurt Adam. If this wasn't the case, then people would have followed the judges' leads, and not voted for Kris, who hasn't received the amount of pimping that others have. As far as people mobilizing in Arkansas, that happens every year on Idol, the people in a contestants home town always form viewing and voting parties, their fan bases across the country do the same thing. Again, how does this indicaate homophobia? For goodness sake, it's just a tv show, get over it. People are going to vote for whoever they want, and for what ever reason they want. BTW, I can't get over the fact that the only reason that this site is covering this season, and the only reason some are supporting and voting for Adam, is because you all think he is gay.  Which is your right, just like it's other people's right to vote for whoever they want for whatever reason they want.
Siti's picture

Do you know what I like

Do you know what I like about this season's finale? It's Kris and Adam - two people of different musical styles, two different backgrounds, just two completely different people who got into the finale, both of whom I felt have already won. American Idol is just a "title" and nothing more.

And do you know what I like better about this season's finale? It's Kris and Adam - despite all those things that I've stated in the above paragraph, they are best friends. This competition has brought these two wonderful human beings together and bonded them and led them to become best friends. Hopefully that friendship will last even after Idol.

And do you know what I like best about this season's finale? It's Kris and Adam - they went beyond people's expectation. People would just assume that a devout Christian like Kris would not be friends with someone like Adam, who is gay. But no, they are friends. Best friends even, who silently supported each other, helped each other whenever possible and however they could. During interviews, you can sense how much they respect each other, love each other. Kris has many a times put his foot down if someone said something untrue about Adam or was just quick to judge Adam. Adam has many a times said how much he respects Kris, "loves that guy", how he's so mellow and nice and cool.

We can all learn from their bromance or friendship or whatever you want to call it. Their friendship makes whatever that's happening right now really immature and ridiculous.

And finally, I just wanna say that Adam has been true to himself throughout the time. I feel that he has been very honest throughout the whole time. If someone who is not fearful of what Fox would do asked Adam outright: "Are you gay?", I'm really sure that Adam would actually answer truthfully. He would never lie unless it was to protect someone he loves. And if you have not realized by now, he never sang "a guy to a girl" songs. Even if he did, he changed the lyrics to fit him. And he's always chosen something really neutral with hidden messages behind. For example, after the photos were leaked out, he sang Black Or White and he enunciated "And I told them about equality, and it's true you're either wrong or you're right" clearly. That's the message he's sending out out there. He doesn't give a damn what you said about him. He's being who he is, without shouting out loud to the rest of the world that he's "gay gay gay gay gayyyyy".

Great post.  I think both

Great post.  I think both Kris and Adam have been true to themselves, and people have responded to that, and that's why both are in the finale.  I love it that these two have such different styles, both are incredible performers, and seem to be amazing people.  Some how, the two most deserving people made it to the top.  They both deserve to be applauded.  And like you said, maybe people can learn something from these two.

Still Mad

"Adam Lambert shouldn't be held responsible for what people write about him or how they write about him or what they call him when they write about him. He's always seemed humble and kind and not cocky or overly confident during the judging, the backstage videos and when talking to Ryan Seacrest."

This is exactly how you can describe Clay Aiken yet people not only voted against him for seeming to be gay (he wasn't talking any more than Adam is now and there were no pictures or video to go by), they publicly crucified him for years. He was mocked for not coming out and despite his enormous talent all the gossips cared about was making fun of him. They essentially destroyed his career. Is this Adam's future? Since most of the gossips are gay, it depends on whether they will endorse him or crucify him in the press.

inanna's picture

I don't remember any

I don't remember any gay-talk surrounding Clay while he was on the show. He came off as more asexual than anything else (although his hometown visit did ping the gaydar.) And for years after the show he alternated between being coy and flat out denying being gay.

I would be very surprised if Adam isn't out and proud once the Idol madness is over - regardless of how it turns out.

Adam = Major, Important Star possibilities

Whether Adam wins or not I think he has far more potential than most of the contestants that come on this show. He reminds me of Freddie Mercury or David Bowie (though he's not imitative of either one) with his charisma, amazing vocals and sense of theatricality I think he has the potential of not just being popular or successful but influential. I don't usually care that much about the winners of this show but I'm definitely interested in what he does next whether he wins or not.
nordic balance's picture

I don't know if this is

I don't know if this is going to come down to a gay vs straight thing. I'm more worried about the consistent pimping of Adam Lambert by all of the judges and producers who have given him prime time performance slots all season. They've been touting him every where they go, on every talk show and in every radio interview. If Adam loses, it may very well be the fault of Simon, Paula and those other two idiots. Kris' has sustained a fan base throughout the competition who voted for him until their fingers bled. He's had little help from the judges who've often given him muted praise even on the best of his nights. If he's so close without the Danny supporters and without the judges' help, he could potentially destroy Adam in the finale if the majority of Danny supporters vote for him tomorrow night. I've been voting for Kris all season merely because I wanted him to make it to the finale(and I truly love his voice), but my votes will go to Adam tomorrow, even if he's outperformed by Kris, as I think crowning him would be a great thing for the show and for, well, us.

My,my. Such serious pontification over something that is ultimately trivial. Name three AI winners that have become successful. Several, like Jennifer Hudson, have managed to manipulate their exposure into very good things. Everybody who's seen People magazine can probably identify rooster-headed Clay Aiken; who remembers what Reuben or Fantasia look like? I stopped watching AI way back when Constantine Maroulis was voted off (or he might have escaped, I couldn't tell), but I'm looking forward to seeing him on the Tony's in a few weeks. If Adam wins, cool. Who knows what lurks in the hearts of any sort of mobilized voters? Will it matter? Probably not so much.

Adam Lamber isn't closeted therefore he doesn't need to come out

It feels like folks are so unused to a celebrity who isn't closeted that we don't know what to do when one appears.

It's really unfair to compare Adam to closeted actors who came out later in life since he isn't and hasn't ever been closeted.

Up until his joining American Idol, Adam's whole life was gay, gay, gay.

His boyfriend is in the audience with his family every week.

What more do folks want from him?

Is he supposed to stop in the middle of a song and say, "By the way, for those of you who are completely blind to the obvious outness of me, just want to let you know that I'm a big  mo!!

He's not hiding his sexuality and it isn't a taboo topic.

Comparisons to political elections...

Comparisons to a political election crack me up. People forget one person can (and does) vote several hundred times. So an AI show getting more votes than a presidential election isn't much of a surprise. And when was the last time a presidential candidate campaigned for the text-happy 10- to 17-year-old vote? Conservative Christians not voting for Adam aside, we all know a huge majority of the votes are coming from people who are barely aware of their religious morals still being brainwashed into them by their parents, and/or are unaware that boys can even like other boys "that way". "Let go of my ears, I know what I'm doing."

Then again, it's so not the reason why I want Adam Lambert to win! I think he is beyond talented!! What he does technically with a song and how he transforms it and how innovative a song sounds, even though it's a song heard over and over and over again, is just phenomenal!!

Where I often speculate and stupidly wonder whether such and so actor is gay or not, in Adam Lambert's case it SO DOESN'T change anything at all - in my point of view. I want to hear him sing and buy his CD, go to his concerts etc etc because I think he is a crazy awesome singer! Man!

I'm having this rather schmaltzy fantasy for Wednesday evening. Being an old poof, and very much into Broadway (whut Adam brought with him).

Adam's won or even lost.  And as his finale for winning (or losing, god forbid), he chooses "Somewhere" from "West Side Story" from fellow LGBT alumni, Leonard Bernstein.

He performs a devastatingly emotional rendition of the piece (albeit shortened), and at the end, with the roar of applause, he calls his (apparently long-time) partner on the stage and they hug vigorously.

By god, if he wins, they even kiss!!

Wow, what a vision!!

What I find intriguing more

What I find intriguing more than whether a gay man can win Idol is whether one of the least pimped Finalists can topple the Godzilla of pimpees. In all honesty, he's hit a plateau (One wasn't all that great) while Kris is probably peaking at the right time. Adam will probably win the title, but then another battle begins. I can see Kris in today's musical landscape. Adam, not so much, unless he wants to battle it out with Katy Perry and Lady Haha.

Does it really matter who

Does it really matter who wins? Clay Aiken didn't win, but he's had a pretty good career anyway, better than the actual winner. Either way, Adam is going to be a star and good for him.

Perez Hilton wrote about Adam's new BF today

Perez Hilton wrote about Adam's new BF today.. I'm pissed, he couldn't have waited two more days until AFTER he had won? This could hurt Adam's chanses of winning. Having an openly gay AI winner would he HUGE, considering this would be the first time..

Isn't this taking it a

Isn't this taking it a little too far, I mean, this is a singing competition and I don't think all the people voting tonight is gonna think hard about what exactly they're voting for and what that vote might mean. You vote for the one you like, the one which music you will most likely by, and for me that person is Adam Lambert. He is the most talented person I have ever seen on American Idol, by far. I just hate that it has to turn to this when we talk about Adam, I don't think he wants to be known as the gay AI contestant, he just wants to be known as Adam. And not at all b/c he doesn't want it to come out, but b/c he just wants to do music. He is so open and I hate when people say he needs to come out. He doesn't need to say those words. What he has done on AI is so brave, and I have mad respect for him. He is an inspiration to all of us - gay or not. He tells us to embrace each other's differences and that it's cool to be different. He shows us every week that he is confident with who he is and that he is not trying to hide his true self. He proves that in the end, it's worth staying true to yourself if you want to suceed. He gives me hope. And I am addicted to his voice, listen to his songs 24/7. I love Adam Lambert and I hope he wins. But either way, he'll have a great career after. PLEASE VOTE FOR ADAM!!! ALL 4 HOURS!!

Adam is like a great

Adam is like a great thoroughbred and he has so far run the race wire to wire for me. The primary audience for American Idol is tweeners, most of them who could careless what Adam's sexuality is all about. He fun to look at and amazingly talented to them, lets hope that carries the day and not a voting blockade by the Christian Right. Why aren’t these God fear people and their children reading the Bible around the kitchen table instead of that heathen TV show? It is a singing competition a takeover by the gay community. Have these people not heard of Johnny Mathis, Johnnie Ray, Van Cliburn, Leonard Bernstein, Billy Strayhorn, Elton John, George Michael? They were and are huge stars that have made incredible contributions to the world through their music. Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh have huge platforms from which to speak, but do they speak truth and reality--not always. Between gay bashing and encouraging the war effort these two men have caused the death of far more men and women in this country. Neither as far as I am aware has ever served in the armed forces. if terrorist ever came to their door they would mostly likely use their guns and fail miserably while cowering in terror. Instead they use innocent men and women as shields before they can get to them. But, let a gay man win a singing competition is the most unholy of the unholies. Remember that is their job, to show the world how bad things have gotten when two people of the same sex love each. Other countries accept gay rights, other countries have gays in the military, other countries let same-sex couples marry, and other countries have had gay winners of their versions of Idol. Yes, America is leading the way in the fight for freedom; accept if you are gay and a brilliantly talented singer.

That's all I am saying...

Fox news, Washington DC isn't ready for a gay idol

The evening newsreader last night, while commenting on the final of AI, said that he thought that Kris should win and told the viewers to "think of the children" while voting. I didn't DVR it, so don't have a record of his exact words unfortunately. It was during the readers' banter back and forth and an off-the-cuff remark, but I thought that it was offensive.
