The Summer Gay TV Viewing Guide

The sun is out, the days are long, and the last thing in the world you want to be doing is sitting inside watching TV.

Or is it? Do you have any idea how much great gay TV there is to be watched this summer? And as usual, the Great Gay is here to help you make sense of it all.

You don’t remember who the Great Gay is, you say? Why, it’s the collective wisdom of all who toil here at AfterElton.com, the sum total of years of thoughtful criticism and endless, stupefying television viewing!

Well, okay, it’s mostly just me blathering on, with the others yelling at me whenever I get something wrong.

May

Ugly Betty (ABC)

Why It’s Gay: The gay characters, of course, but also the main character, Betty, the ultimate Ugly Duckling.

When It’s On: The show returned from that annoying break on April 30th and runs through May 14th, Thursday nights at 8 PM.

Betty and new love interest Matt (Daniel Eric Gold)

The Great Gay Says: Yay, Betty got renewed for a fourth season (despite dangerously middling ratings)! The critical reaction to this latest season has been mixed, but the Great Gay has been (mostly) loving it. And who knew there was anyone cuter than Christopher Gorham’s Henry? Turns out there was, and it’s the adorkable Daniel Eric Gold, as Matt.

Greek (ABC Family)

Why It’s Gay: Gay frat brother Calvin.

When It’s On: Mondays at 8 PM.

The Great Gay Says: Calvin has mostly been in the background this season. Come to think of it, he was mostly in the background last season, too. But for the rest of the season … well, he’s mostly still in the background, although there is an interesting scene or two in a minor subplot where a “straight” jock is flirting with him. We have to wait until the season finale, on June 1st, when Calvin meets his next love interest, Dante’s Cove alum Gregory Michael. Don’t screw with us, Greek: give Calvin some major screen-time next season or else!
