The Summer Gay TV Viewing Guide

NewNowNext Awards (Logo)

Why It’s Gay: Logo honors the best in film, TV, music, the Internet, and general celebrity-dom -- all from a decidedly queer perspective.

When It’s On: Saturday, June 13th at 9 PM.

The Great Gay Says: Yes, yet another ironic awards show. But let’s face it: the only reason we watch awards shows is to see the celebrities. This promises to have plenty of them, both A-list and, um, those of the reality show variety.

Torchwood (BBC America)

Why It’s Gay: Um, omnisexual Captain Jack (John Barrowman), his boy-toy Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd) and maybe Captain John (James Marsters) save the world and snog a lot.

When It’s On: This might be the best-kept secret in the universe. The latest speculation has it airing over five consecutive nights sometime in June. Stay tuned for details.

The Great Gay Says: It just figures that one of the best gay, er, omnisexual characters on television has to be on a show that’s going to air only five episodes and all in a row. Thanks BBC America. Oh, well, we still want ratings to be through the roof so the show comes back for another season with more episodes airing weekly.

True Blood (HBO)

Why It’s Gay: It’s got (or is that had?) a gay character, Lafayette, and a gay creator, Alan Ball. Plus, there’s the omnipresent metaphorical comparison made between vampires and gay people.

When It’s On: The second season starts Sunday, June 14th.

The Great Gay Says: The show loses points for being yet another story about the most tired monster in the history of Hollywood: vampires. But then it gains them all back for showing Ryan Kwanten in his underwear again and again. The first season finale left Lafayette’s fate in the air, but word is that even if he bites it (couldn’t resist!), other queer characters will take his place. And did I mention Ryan Kwanten in his underwear?
