“Supernatural” is So Gay (In My Dreams Anyway)

Previous seasons had Sam and Dean discovering their family tradition of being demon “hunters” and setting off across the country (in a 1967 Chevy Impala) to do battle with all manner of paranormal creatures – some decidedly kick-ass.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (left) played Sam and Dean's father in the
first two seasons and still appears occasionally in flashback

In the second and third seasons, the brothers found themselves in the middle of an apocalyptic war, with hundreds of demons eventually escaping from a gate to hell – demons that now had to be tracked down and killed by Sam and Dean.

But it’s been this latest season where the show has really kicked into high gear – mostly due to the appearance of a decidedly mysterious angel (played by the aforementioned Collins, who is indeed heavenly) and Sam and Dean’s involvement in an epic battle between demons and angels.

Misha Collins as "Castiel"

Most interesting of all, the creators of Supernatural have chosen to drop a bomb right in the middle of the show’s core: the relationship between Sam and Dean.

The world must be saved (yet again), but this year, Sam and Dean have very different ideas on how best to do it. And not only do they both think the other is dead-wrong, they think the other guy is too weak to pull it off anyway.

There’s always been tension between Sam and Dean, but nothing like this. A recent episode even had them going at each other – and not in a mere Joan-Collins-catfighting-with-Linda-Evans-in-Dynasty kind of way. It was a shockingly intense brawl.

But by choosing to really “go there,” Supernatural has absolutely hit its artistic peak. And why wouldn’t it? As much as we care about saving “the world,” what viewers care the most about is, of course, Sam and Dean. If the creators wanted to get us to sit up and really pay attention, threatening that relationship was exactly the way to do it.

After seasons of fighting everything from shape-shifters to a supernatural clown, the main characters are finally up against a truly difficult challenge: what happens when you fundamentally disagree with the person you love?

Two hot men who deeply love each other trying hard to work out their conflicts so that they can stay together? It’s easy to see how gay and bisexual viewers might relate. So chalk up one more reason why the show might appeal to us.

Except they’re not really gay. However much we might wish otherwise, we must always remember: they’re brothers.

Catch Supernatural on Thursdays, 9/8c on the CW, at the CW website, or on Hulu.com.

Brent, this line: "Two hot

Brent, this line: "Two hot men who deeply love each other trying hard to work out their conflicts so that they can stay together?" That sums it all up right there. And it doesn't hurt that Jensen and Jared seem to be as comfortable together off screen as on. Thanks for the fun piece.

Brent - you forced me out of the closet

Thank you for extolling your love for Supernatural, you have given me the confidence to publicly admit that I also love this show, in fact it's the only show on TV right now that I won't miss.  Something I've neither told friends or co-workers out of fear that I may lose my title as "biggest snob".

And you are absolutely right - this fourth season has been a real kicker, a deconstructionists mind-f*ck, tearing apart Judea-Christian beliefs on who represents good and who represents evil.  The massacre of the angels was unbelievable, a splash in the face that all sides resort to ruthless means when trying to achieve dominance.

I only hope that Supernatural does not fall into the trap of Lost and X-Files, and gets muddled in its own mythology.

So-so

I could give a "take it or leave it" attitude with this show. True that the show doesn't bend to cliched gay panic jokes and such, but that doesn't stop it from being cliched in other ways. I can't put my finger on particular scenes, but when I did give it a chance, it left me cold. Maybe since the con-artist thing has been done so many times. Besides, two hots guys that only do chicks gets old after a while. Maybe if one of them was bisexual, and the writing was a little bit better, I might give this show another shot.

I'm surprised you left out

I'm surprised you left out the whole "groped by an angel" angle. Dean and Castiel have been getting closer and closer ever since the angel "gripped him tight and pulled him from perdition". Who knows? Maybe they'll go there in season 5. Or at least some recognition of unrequited love/infatuation on Castiel's side.

I think the last two

I think the last two episodes of this season were designed to drive us crazy, what with yelling at Castiel and Dean: 'Just kiss already!'

Oh, and after the season finale ended came the normal reaction to a season finale: DAMN YOU KRIPKE!!!

Supernatural owns me. It just does.

Thank you, Brent! Supernatural deserves the love.

Although this isn't the first time you've shown some love for Supernatural, this article compelled me to finally register so I could also show some love for this spectacular show.

I've been a fan of the show since it first aired back in 2005. While I didn't know much about Jared, I've always appreciated Jensen's other roles prior to Supernatural (Days of Our Lives, Dark Angel, Smallville), so when I came to realize he was going to be on this new show called Supernatural, I knew I had to check it out.

While the stories themselves are great in and of themselves, it's the relationship between the 2 brothers that makes it even more compelling to watch. It's obvious from watching the show (and even behind-the-scenes footage on the DVD's and YouTube) that Jensen and Jared have great chemistry together and make the relationship so believable. The fact that they do not shy away from (occasional) gay content makes me appreciate them and the show even more.

And just when you think it can't get any better, they outdo themselves in Season 4 by not only adding a new recurring character of Castiel (heavenly indeed!), they pit Sam and Dean against each other. And if that isn't enough to make one giddy (who, me?), there are even rumblings of a possible Season 6 (keeping fingers crossed.)

And for the record, I was quite pleased to see both Jensen and Jared in the top 20. You can be sure I did my part in voting for both of them. Although due to a small oversight, I completely missed out on voting for Misha Collins and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, but was thrilled to see them on the top 100!

I realize this got a little longer that I had planned. Hopefully no one will mind! ;)

I agree: it's all about their chemistry!

It's funny how so much of a show's success depends on random actors liking each other, or at least having a natural rapport. In this case, they sure do!

Supernatural

I watched a few episodes on and off for the first three seasons even though it followed Smallville one of my favorite shows. I think it was because there was another show on another channel that I used to watch, but for the life of me can't remember the name. I've watched it this season and have been drawn in. If Hulu ever puts this on I'll watch it from the beginning. The thing that I love is that it has that Buffy attitude where things can be serious but they also can be funny. I love those moments as they are few and far between on other shows.

We've certainly come a long way since the time when I used to mention this show and the only repsonse I'd get was, "So what's gay about that?" For those of you who can't get enough of the boys, Tina Charles posts a weekly blog at TVguide.com. And as for what the boys get up to when the cameras arent't rolling, here's a hint from YouTube (I've posted this before, but it's priceless): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9vWKpQr22A

I hate to be the one to say

I hate to be the one to say it, but I've been watching Supernatural since season one and this season has been absolutely awful. It's committed the worst sin a television show can, making me completely indifferent to what happens. In season one I desperately cared what happened to the boys, in season two the finale left me feeling satisfied and damn pleased, but season three started slipping and this season I honestly don't care what happens.

You are not the only one

I also was a casual fan of the show from the very beginning, and actually gave it up a few episodes in this season.I can`t believe those words Brent used in the paragraph below the half-naked boys picture(solid scripts, impressive thrills, etc.Really,Brent?)The guys are cute, and their acting skills are pretty decent. But that`s about it.Nothing else really impress me.The old Ruby(Katie Cassidy) in last season is one of the few things I truly enjoyed and looked forward to,and they get rid of her...

Totally Superficial

I had no idea how tall Jared is, 6'4" Jensen Ackles is 6' but I'd always thought he was not particularly tall because he was so much shorter than Jared P. and I only every see them together.

When I saw them on this rWB Red carpet thingy I was shocked at how big they both are. Crazy. I'm definitely a new fan of the show.

Thanks for the great column. They are a wonderful team to watch on and off the screen.

I had discounted this show

I had discounted this show after watching several episodes during the first season. The 1st and 3rd seasons have been on sale at Target for $20 each, so I picked those up and the 2nd and started watching, just because I had heard the show had gotten better. I'm so glad that I did, because although not every episode is all that great, there's some solid, entertaining TV throughout. I watched four seasons in about 2 weeks or less. Certainly, it's not for everyone, but as a horror fan that loves looking at Sam, Dean, and their car, I've really enjoyed it. I do feel that it has become increasingly better on average each season. I can't wait for the finale tonight.

Love Supernatural!

I love Supernatural! It's such a great show! Good scripts and good acting.

My favorite episode was the episode with the "slash fic" thing.. LOL. The episode was great, so emotional, sad and funny.. I LOL'ed when they adressed the slash fics. That was one of the funniest moments during the whole series. The sad moment was when that writer said to Sam "Drinking blod Sam, you gotta know that's wrong", or something to that exctent, I chocked up when he said that.

This season has been great, and I can't wait to see what happens in the season finale.

Dean and his angel are so

Dean and his angel are so gay for each other. That's the highlight of a rather predictable finale.
