Watch: CNN Covers "Invasion" of Gay Characters on TV

Apparently things were really slow around the Showbiz Tonight offices as someone decided it was time to do a "Special Report" called "Too Gay for TV?" to look at the "surge" in gay characters on television. Here is the "report."

At one point, tag line under the report reads, "Is The Surge of Gay Characters on TV Sending the Wrong Message?"

What is with the inflammatory language? "Invasion?" "Surge?" So gays and lesbians are "attacking" America? Seriously, CNN?

While this is certainly a topic to be discussed, the way it is framed here is ridiculous and insulting. There is no "furious" debate except in the minds of the fringe cultural critics CNN always seems to find, as well as these reporters trying to drum up ratings.

And there is no "surge" of gay characters on television. The report fails to mention that CBS currently has no gay characters (several are being shoehorned in for the upcoming season) and that the number of gay characters has risen modestly, if at all. [Editor's note: The report does note that CBS got a failing grade from GLAAD.]

And why are they asking the question in such a negative way? How about "Is Greater Gay Visibility Increasing Tolerance?" Or perhaps examining CBS' incredibly poor history of excluding GLBT characters? I guess we should just be grateful they at least talked to some gay people for our perspective. Too bad they couldn't manage to spell Chris Colfer's name right.

So much for serious journalism from these "journalists."

Update: GLAAD reports that after talking with the network, CNN pulled the offensive poll that went along with the online version of the story. No explanation yet as to how the biased story came to be in the first place.
