Which Gay Character Will be Having an Encounter of the Heterosexual Kind?
Michael Ausiello over at TVLine has a blind item up today suggesting that one of our gay characters might be about to have an encounter of the heterosexual kind. Says Ausiello:
An imminent episode of a hit series will find a popular gay character wondering whether he might actually be — gasp — bi!
The question of sexual disorientation arises after the confirmed bachelor has an encounter with a pivotal member of the opposite gender. (A close encounter, I’d imagine!) Afterwards, he’s forced to consider the possibility that he swings both ways.
Ausiello goes on to add that "I’m told by the episode’s end, there will be some resolution. I just don’t know yet, er, which way it’ll go" and that "...at least the show will be giving hope to the hetero female viewers who’ve long wished the character played for their team."

Naturally this has set off a ton of speculation as to which character it might be with much attention being paid to the words "confirmed bachelor" and "hit show."
I have to say I have a lot of skepticism about this and suspect we're looking at a barely there gay character having an encounter in the "C" storyline of an episode that is going to be pretty disappointing. Why am I so dubious? Because there are so few possible candidates.
Let's look them over.
Based on the "imminent episode" condition we can rule out anything that isn't currently airing so that eliminates anyone from True Blood, United States of Tara, and Torchwood (although Captain Jack is already bisexual).
The words "confirmed bachelor" knocks out pretty much every teenager as I've never heard a teen referred to as a "confirmed bachelor." So that eliminates Kurt and Blaine from Glee, Ian from Shameless, and Eric from Gossip Girl.
And the word "bachelor" drops Kevin and Scotty from Brothers & Sisters and Cameron and Mitchell from Modern Family. A lot of folks have suggested it might be Teddy from 90210, but given what we already know about what's in store for him, not to mention the fact he just came out, he doesn't really fit either. Especially not when you consider Ausiello's hint that it gives hope to hetero female viewers who have long wanted him on their team. Teddy just stopped playing for their team after all.
There is John Cooper on Southland, but A) it's not a hit show by most definitions and B) given how many folks didn't even realize John was gay until this week, I doubt there are too many women who have long lusted after him.
There is also Calvin from Greek and while I bet many women have lusted after him, again the terms "hit show" and "confirmed bachelor" also seem to rule him out. And I can't picture it being Barca from Spartacus. Theoretically it could be Smithers from The Simpsons, but only if cartoon women are lusting after him.
So how about Oscar from The Office? It's a long running, hit show, but I'm not sure how big a fan base he has of women hoping to get him in the sack. Then there is Alby on Big Love, but only psychotic women could be interested in him. There are the gay men of Desperate Housewives but given that Bob and Lee just adopted, it's hard to see the show having one of them stepping out on the other. Andrew seems a possibility, but that would just confirm what I said about a barely there gay character with a lame storyline.
The only real confirmed bachelor I can think of is Uncle Saul from Brothers & Sisters, so maybe it's him. Personally, I suspect the blind item might be poorly worded and therefore impossible to figure out, but we'll just have to wait to see.
BTW, I'm sure the character will decide they are really gay. Because if there is one thing network TV has shown itself pretty incapable of dealing with, it would be male bisexuality.
So what are your guesses?
