News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (March 23, 2009)

Whether it be winning the heart of his true love Ian or falling for a married man (again), Mickey’s never ending search for love is full of pitfalls and little promise (though lucky for him, lots of sex).

Yet, as with making the perfect score or pulling the right scam, Mickey never gives up and keeps on walking down that winding road to romance. After all, he's really an old softie — just ignore the potty mouth and frequent violent outbursts because everybody’s got their quirks. So for all those reasons and more, he is our SOAP STUD OF THE WEEK.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK

Kings & Clara Sheller

Kings - It's going to be fun while it lasts. I'm watching but I still have reservations about the creator who;s a little too defensive for my taste when it comes to Jack, David & Jack/David.

CS - I'm one of those viewers who are rooting for Gilles and JP. I mean, ever since the first season when Gilles was hunkier and less hairy. Hee. Whether it was wrong to feel that way, I always felt that Clara "stole" Gilles from JP and what's happening now is what should have happened in the first place. While I think that both JP and Clara have major issues, I think they need it more than someone like Gilles whose plate is already full with dealing with his burgeoning bisexuality as well dealing with these commitment-phobes.

p.s. I love it (and find it hot) that Gilles is a bottom.

Slight HO spoiler

Great column, as always. Frankly, I don't find any of the characters on Clara Sheller likeable. It's one of the reasons why I liked the cast from the first season, because it is so hard to play characters who are so flawed, and who have personalities that no sane person could stand. All the characters are self-centered and constantly take part in things that are self destructive. I love the show, especially all of the drama that is currently unfolding, but I think it would be hard to watch more than a five or ten minute clip of this, since there is no one on this show who is worth rooting for. One of my biggest problems with HO is that they waste the talent of Gerard McCarthy. He is so much better than the one note character that they've written him to be. And, if you hate this storyline now, just wait until April when Kris tells Ravi why he entered into a relationship with him and Nancy. Hopefully, the spoilers aren't telling the whole story, and the writers add some depth to this storyline.

Various

Thanks for the Mickey photos and profile. I just love this character so much. Now if only he could find true love. His brothers are settled down (not happily, but they're settled), he also deserves a partner.

I don't know if the JPC/Kieron story was what helped the ratings last year. They weren't very good for the big SE. It was Niall's kidnapping of the McQueens that really blew the ratings up. The ratings for HO haven't been great in a while. Even last year they were underwhelming. The show was far too plot-driven and far too much about darkness. Who wants to sit through that? The Ravi/Nancy/Kris triangle is bad, but JP's last few stories weren't any better. I just hope this doesn't mean the show will abandon same-sex stories.

Eastenders needs to get rid of Phil Mitchell, he's useless and probably has a big salary. They also need to stop pretending homosexuality means asexuality.

I'm thrilled ATWT is not going to make Damian evil again. His last return was a slap in the face to Paolo and to all of Damian's fans. They ruined his character. It was inexcusable. I'm also glad he gets along with Noah. Now if only they could make out...

Noah and Holden

Noah and Damien would be hot, but I was always kind of partial to Noah and Holden myself.  Now that would give Luke reason to throw a temper tantrum.

Mickey so deserves a boyfriend.   The guy is just desperate for love and it's time he dealt with a real relationship for the first time in his life.  I think it would also great because he'd probably finally have to come out to his parents and brother, who seem to be the only ones who don't know he's gay.

Ugh.  Hollyoaks has been awful for a long time.  The show has no rhyme or reason and has no direction.  It just seems like there's a bunch of stuff happening.  And most of it is really dull.  I don't like Kris so he can go.  And I wouldn't cry to see Ravi leave.  They need to bring on some new gay men.... or bring Spike back.  Personally, I think what the show really needs is a new producer.

Don't get me started on Eastenders!

I had a feeling that Damian wouldn't be evil like last time because what would be the point?  And I'm delighted at the plot thrust the show is taking.  This has the potential to be some nice family drama, not to mention revisting one of my favorite triangles ever Holden/Lily/Damian.  Anything to get Jon H. back on screen on a regular basis.   Of course, my guess is that the actual 'story' will revolve around the hit and run and who did it and if there will be further attacks.

If there's a flaw going in it's Noah's instant belief of Damian being sincere.  After all these boys have been through, you'd think he'd be a bit more wary, if only for Luke's sake.  But the show tends to write Noah's character depending on the needs of the plot, I think.

To be fair, even though Lucy

To be fair, even though Lucy Allen has been the Executive Producer at Hollyoaks for a few months, the current storylines belong to Bryan Kirkwood.  Lucy's storylines won't begin to appear until June, so maybe there's hope that things will get better.

You're Right!

I'd forgotten all about that.  So..... I guess we have to be a little patient.  But the show, right now, is painful to watch.  This bisexual triangle stuff is just plain bad.  And it seems to have no point other than shock value.  And they couldn't even get that right.

Noah and Damian

Remember how desperate Noah was to believe that he was getting through to his father, and that Winston was redeemable? My suspicion would be that he was projecting that onto Luke's father (although it sounds like he will be right this time.)

Noah has to be a soap writer's dream character, since it's actually in character for him to be ambivalent, blow hot and cold, and reverse himself regularly. While he's less strident than Luke, he's just as driven by emotion, and understands his own emotions even less.

Speaking of Winston Meyer, I'm dismissing him from the poll above as a suspect until I see some evidence, since that choice came out of left field, but how awsome would it be to have reformed Damian vs evil Winston?

On the subject of his housing reversal, I don't think Noah is behaving uncharacteristically or contradictory, I think they just left out a critical piece of story - that first scene was pretty clearly a set-up for this, and that incident was percolating in Noah's mind, and led him to where he is now - the writers just neglected to show us that important bit of mental prodessing.

Unlike the atrocious-from-conception Ameera storyline, I think recent problems have come from basically workable ideas executed in a flawed way. Knock wood for upcoming storylines!

I'd prefer a Noah and

I'd prefer a Noah and Holden pairing too.  That would be way hotter and illicit!  I hope this Zac can act because the potential for a Nuke love triangle is DOA if he can't.  *crosses fingers*

I've tried to watch HO and this Ravi/Nancy/Kris storyline is a major disappointment compared to last year's JP and Kieron saga.  Who do you root for in this hot mess of a triangle?  The only redeeming thing about it is that HO is at least showcasing a bisexual person of color.  Too bad Ravi, while hot as hell, is such an unappealing character.

Speaking of stories that were great a year ago but not so much these days, when will VL's Ollian stop being background players?  While I treasure each and every second the guys are on, surely they can do more than renovate NoLimits.  Can't VL have lesbian and gay stories playing out simultaneously or would that be too much even for Germany?

Thanks again for this latest edition.  And I'm loving Marshall and Jason on USoT.  I hope Andrew Lawrence sticks around for a bit.

Kings is already paid for!

Hey Anthony, wonderful GOOL as usual.

I was wondering if you could explain to me the logic of cancelling Kings. The show's 13 episodes are already shot and paid for. Does cancelling mean they would not show those episodes at all? 6 million people watched the first episode, which is more than dreck like Gossip Girls ever gets. It seems they would still do better to move Kings to a less primetime spot, but still show the rest of the episodes that already exist.

Am I missing something about how the TV industry works?

Why does Susannah Thompson always have gay kids?

"Once and Again" "The Book of Daniel" and now "Kings." That's three series. Is this some kind of record?
Cadence's picture

I doubt his character will

I doubt his character will be gay, but James Sutton has just landed a role on Emmerdale. Here's a synopsis of the role: Ryan, a mechanic, arrives in Emmerdale to stay with his mum after losing his job. He quickly gets caught up in Faye's (Kim Thomson) plot for revenge against Mark. Ryan soon becomes a local heartthrob in the village and is set for an on-screen romance with Katie Sugden (Sammy Winward).

Mickey grows on you

I hated Mickey when he first showed up on Shameless - actually, I hated *all* the McGuires. But he's grown on me, and now is probably my favorite character on the show. Any possibility you guys could score an interview with the actor?

Damian

Wow, the new storyline with Luke's dad Damian seems good! And Damian is kinda hot too.

I really hope Zak stays on the show for a while. I would like Nuke to get the same treatment as the other straight characters on the show, and that means a love triangle.. This storyline has some potential too!

Thanks for the heads up about the gay demon on Reaper! I love the show, and I love the fact that the gay demons are treated like every other character on the show. The fact that they're deamons is a MUCH bigger deal than them being gay. Sam's friends had no problems with them being gay, demons on the other hand was a much bigger issue!

Reaper might not get renewed for a third season though.. It has suffered from bad ratings this season, and it's still in limbo at the moment.

Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.

The Queen Vic

The central location of Eastenders was always intended to be - and always has been - the Queen Vic, the pub that anchors the entire square. That being the case, I think people drinking alcohol is to be somewhat expected.

Clara Sheller Spoiler

I just watched the newest ep of Clara Sheller...All of them are talking to shrinks (well, JP is talking to his friend which is good enough) and we get to see the past few weeks from everyone's perspective.  Finally in a session, Clara realizes (her shrink seems to have figured it out much earlier) that 1) it's probably too late for her and Gilles, 2) Gilles is having an affair, and 3) he's having it with JP.  And she rushes off to confront him while he's in a budget meeting.  Awesome.

Funny that I love Gilles most of all, despite this being the Clara and JP dramafest.
