News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (March 30, 2009)

ShamelessMickey is being a little too nice to young Carl, giving him presents and buying him drinks. One night, Mickey plies the young lad with booze until he passes out. And when he’s later caught trying to get into Carl’s pants, it doesn’t look so good. So exactly what is he after? We can’t tell you … but we can say it’s the last thing you’d expect. Meanwhile, Ian and the family support their little brother when he gets the chance to study abroad.

An innocent drink between buds? Or something else?

GOOL NEWSBEAT

As The World Turns won the GLAAD award for Best Daytime Drama, besting All My Children. ATWT's stars Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann were on hand to accept the award (and looked mighty dashing while doing it). The show also nabbed the award last year and even though it’s been an up and down year for both the show and the couple, in this columnists’ humble opinion, they should have won if only for the episode in which Oakdale celebrated Gay Pride Day complete with a visit from Miss Cyndi Lauper.

No other soap and very few shows of any sort have shown such a lavish and outspoken example of gay rights and gay pride. So kudos to ATWT for a well deserved honor. Now if only they could tell better stories.  But that’s for another column!

The Young and the Restless, considered the best soap opera on the air in most circles these days, is about to reveal a major character is a "friend of Dorothy" according to Nelson Branco’s Suds Report. Branco doesn’t indicate which character, but this columnist has a strong suspicion as to who it could be. The only hints I’ll give are that I think the character is the son of one of the show’s bad girls and the actor in that role has played gay before. I hope I’m right about this one. Fingers crossed!

Antony Cotton

Openly gay actor Antony Cotton (Sean, Coronation Street) signed a new contract with the soap that will keep him on the show until June 2010. For those thinking, what’s the point since Sean hasn’t actually had anything resembling a storyline in months, that’s about to change. Things are looking up for him in the form of a new boyfriend. According to producers, Sean is about to meet the love of his life at a Mr. Gay Weatherfield competition. The actor is said to be thrilled with his new story arc.

Jake Silbermann (Noah, As The World Turns) will be one of the celebrities appearing at “Love Out Loud,” a fundraiser for this year’s AIDS Walk New York. The event, during which celebrities take the stage and perform musical numbers, is on Wednesday, May 13th at Prohibition in Manhattan. AIDS Walk New York is a few days later, on Sunday, May 17th. The event is very popular with New York based soap stars as actors from One Life To Live, All My Children and Guiding Light will also be in attendance.
