News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (April 06, 2009)

Moving on to Forbidden Love, we’ve got a pair of new clips. As he has done for the past several months, Christian doles out sage advice as Gregor torments himself over his stormy relationship with the Princess. Meanwhile, Olli, if not listening to the woes and complaints of the lesbians in his family, advises Olivia as she schemes to snare Sebastian. Surprisingly enough, it’s actually more interesting than usual.

The one thing I have always liked about this show is the continued use of music. It’s always used effectively to add mood and tone to the events going on screen. And I also liked the scenes with Christian and Gregor where they talked about his confusion and torment over his love for this woman.

But to be honest, as much as I like Gregor and I enjoy the brotherly relationship between Christian and Gregor, we’ve seen these types of scenes between these too many times. And as torn apart as Gregor is now, I just know that it won’t be long before we’ll see these scenes again, only with a different lady.

Perhaps the show could stop recycling this storyline and give Gregor a little growth as a character. But there’s no denying that the scenes between Gregor and the Princess work despite the fact that I was not impressed the first time I saw them together. The angst, the heartache, the drama is all there. It’s classic soap stuff.

Olivia’s presence was a definite bright spot in this episode

As for Olivia, her banter with Olli was bitchily delicious and I love hearing them spar. Not so fun was the return of Judith, one the drabbest and most boring soap characters to ever exist. I’m already not looking forward to hearing her go on and on and on about some new bland, dull guy she’s hopelessly in love with. The best thing about those scenes was the sneer on Olivia’s face when she saw Judith. Priceless.

But give me my boys back, please! One cute scene where they have a brief kiss just isn’t enough.

Next up, Clara Sheller. Here we deal with the aftermath of JP confessing to Clara that he’d been having an affair with Gilles. I was so looking forward to this episode, the screaming, the shouting, the accusations, the tears, the hair pulling. Unfortunately, the only hair I pulled was my own.

Anti-climatic is the best way I can describe this episode. Yes, there were plenty of awkward moments, between the threesome and they were done well and were ripe with emotion. But what about where we left off? We don’t get to see Clara and J.P.’s confrontation about his sleeping with her man? We don’t get to see Gilles and Clara have it out when she tells him what she knows?

And what about JP and Gilles right after the reveal and after Clara has left? After all that build up only to not see the fallout was a major disappointment.

And the tiniest bit of guilt from JP over what he’s done would've been nice. This is his best friend he betrayed. Even if he wants to hold on to Gilles, he should feel bad about it, And the only one who had the only emotions that rang true in this episode was Gilles. He was in love with both people and not ashamed of his feelings, but he was still hurt, confused and torn. And that made him more real and human than either JP or Clara.
