Gays of our Lives (April 28, 2009)

This week’s GOOL has quite a bit in store for you: a chat with Sophie co-star Jeff Geddis, who plays the title character’s gay best friend, a brand new installment of GOOL Theatre with what will probably be our final visit to River City, and the beginning of what promises to be intriguing plot arcs on All That Matters and The Young and the Restless. Plus some wild spoilers about the kidnapping drama on As the World Turns that will definitely have you saying WTF!? I know they did me.

And, of course, the usual cornucopia of news, reviews and our Soap Stud Of The Week!

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

INTERVIEW WITH JEFF GEDDIS
First up, we talk to Sophie’s Jeff Geddis, who plays Matt, Sophie’s gay best friend. The 33-year-old actor gives us some insight into his character, what drew him into the role, as well as a peek of what to expect in future episodes on the sitcom, currently running on ABC Family.

If you haven’t yet caught the show, Sophie is a Canadian import (where it has just finished its second season) about the life of one Sophie Parker, a thirtysomething woman struggling to balance being a single mother with her work and love life. Lest that sound too serious, Sophie is a rather frothy show with over the top characters and storylines, with each thirty-minute episode providing a nice little escape from the real world.

Jeff Geddis as Dr. Matt Scott

AfterElton.com: Sophie has just started airing here in this country. What can you tell us about Matt and the show?
Jeff Geddis:
We’ve finished our second season here so I’m trying to backtrack all the way to Season One, but you’re following a single woman who has been dumped by her boyfriend and discovers that she has a child that in fact isn’t his. It’s all about her journey through this experience and she has really one bona fide ally [Matt] … she has a lot of antagonistic characters in her life. I’m sort of the consummate shoulder to cry on, the advice-giver, sort of the classic BFF.

It’s nice because she really doesn’t have much of a support system so it was kind of fun being the one character that was always the good guy, so to speak.

Geddis with Natalie Brown who plays Sophie

AE: What do you like about playing Matt?
JG:
It was nice to be the one character on the show that I knew was always on Sophie’s side. The other characters, like I said, are always or most often in opposition to Sophie so it was kind of nice to develop a bond with Natalie [Brown], the actress who plays Sophie.

And I just liked the approach to the gay character of the show being sort of down the middle and not your typical stereotyped gay character that we often see on television and I wanted to present a character that was relatable, right down the middle. I mean I have several gay friends in my life and none of them are like the people you see on television, so I just wanted to try to get a really true and accurate rendition of … I sort of took all of my very close friends and bundled them all into one and brought that into the room. That was my approach to the character in the first place.
