Gays of our Lives (April 28, 2009)Maybe it’s the accent. Maybe it’s the incredible body. Or maybe it’s the handsome face. But there’s something about Aidan Devane that captures your attention. Okay, he’s not the brightest guy in the world, which is kind of scary given that he’s a private detective. But when it comes to being a good guy and saving those in need (usually a woman), you can count on Aidan to be there.
Whether you’re a mysterious amnesiac or a widow grieving the loss of your husband or clinically insane and locked up in a mental ward (that Aidan has some taste in ladies, I gotta say), you can count on our stud to give you a shoulder to cry on, some words to make you feel better and every inch of that body of his. Because the best kind of comfort Aidan gives is horizontal in nature. And when you look like him, can you really argue? So for all those reasons and more, he is our SOAP STUD OF THE WEEK.

ATWT vs Y&R
I will always commend As the World Turns for not only making a major character gay, but also giving him a boyfriend and, for the most part, keeping him in the front lines with major storylines. Unfortunately...most of those storylines have been abysmally lame. What used to be one of my favorite shows is now pretty much a laughing-stock. I haven't even watched this whole Zac/Zoe s/l because I know it's ridiculous. Again, however, I commend them for breaking the ground that now allows...
...The Young & the Restless to add their own character. The "big reveal" was so refreshing in that it WASN'T a "big reveal"--Rafe is a confident, out gay man, Colleen and even J.T. were cool with it. Watching the program all last week, I was not only immediately hooked into the various strands of the show, but was immensely impressed with the quality of the writing--this is definitely character-based melodrama that is constantly referencing the past (Kevin's childhood traumas, Ashley's miscarriages, etc.). This, my friends, is how you do a great soap opera.
And this is why I have confidence that Nelson Branco will be correct (and, yeah, sorry, I gotta agree with him re Jake Silbermann--but he IS a looker!) and that Y&R will follow through with a strong story for Rafe. Obviously, we're all hopeful that this will lead to a romance with one of the show's major characters. Certainly would be nice; I see Adam handily won the poll, with Other/New guy coming in second. Personally, I can see Rafe fitting into three different stories right now: a growing relationship with Adam, thus competing with Heather for his affections, though Adam could be just using him (but why? is it because it's Adam who's gaslighting Ashley, or does Rafe's Aunt Estella have something to do with it?); or Rafe's growing friendship with Colleen could lead J.T. (who's under orders from Victor to dig up some dirt on Colleen) to use Rafe, toy with his affections, to help him dig up that dirt; or the much rumored return of Philip Chancellor IV, the Navy SEAL, and thus we have a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" storyline. I'm kind of doubting the latter, as Y&R doesn't strike me as tackling such a controversial issue with Rafe right off the bat. Or it could be something completely unexpected. With this show, I'm trying hard to avoid spoilers! (Though I can't help but speculate!)
Anyhow, I'm hooked and I can't wait to see what develops. I hope it's good!

Various
Glad to see those lovely photos of Aidan Turner. I'm amazed AMC has been smart enough to keep him for the past 7 years, even as they rarely use him. One of the few things they've done right lately is to give him more storyline. He is breathtaking and his acting has come a long way.
As for Jake Silbermann, all I have to say is if Nelson Branco doesn't like him, Jake must be doing something right! Besides, Branco changes his opinion over and over and over.
Y&R is a very socially conservative show, and a very dark show, and not especially well-written what with their endless Victor love and their chipmunk interludes, so I can't say I'm looking forward to this story with bit player Rafe. I'll be happy to be proven wrong. I thought Brothers & Sisters was alright last week.
At least Kevin and Scotty had more of a story. I just hate this Ryan story, bringing him in as the inexplicably evil Walker makes no sense to me, and the actor sucks. Did David Paisley want to leave River City? His character wasn't gay until right before he left, was he?
Did you know the scenes Christian was supposed to have in Eastenders were cut? This character is so meaningless they don't even pretend to care about him.
Agree and Disagree
Given that Aiden has no family in Pine Valley, it's shocking he is still on that show. He's beautiful, but I think his acting is as woeful as when he's started. IMO, he's been lucky that he's been paired with a number of talented leading ladies. But as I said in another post, a certain look and clicking with a certain actor can keep you employed.
I'm loving the chimpmunk stuff. I think it's a total hoot. I've never seen anything like it in daytime and it's very well done, I think. And Greg Rikkart is doing some great work in the storyline. As for Rafe, I do have fresh news on Rafe and the gay storyline, but I'll save that for the next GOOL.
As for Christian and cut scenes, shows cut scenes all the time for any number of reasons, usually for length. I know a recent scene of his was cut, but so were other scenes with other actors to be fair to the show. As for Christian, he will have more to do in the coming weeks and months and I'll have the details on that in the next GOOL. Though I'll just say right now I'm not thrilled with what the show plans to do.
I see your points
Aiden was lucky to be paired with Greenlee, and especially Annie. There was a long dry patch where every woman he was with was a relationship viewers barely saw (Anita, Di, Erin). I do think he's done good work in the story with Annie.
I'm too hard on Y&R because for me the show will never be what it was with Bill Bell and I don't like the current team based on some of their other shows. So I appreciate your more balanced perspective.
Thaks for the warning for Christian. I don't think they've had any idea of waht to do with the character for a long time. I keep expecting them to pair him with Roxy, which wouldn't be more ridiculous tha some of their current romances. The funny part is when you go to his Wikipedia page, they have a big section on how people react to his being gay. Yet most of his role on the show has been wearing vests and being a pal.
What do you think of the bullying story with Anita on Hollyoaks? I've heard some say the story is carrying the show at the moment. I still think they have a good cast, their stories and pacing just don't work, and have not for probably a year or more.
Chipmunk Love
I'd been wondering how you were reacting to the chipmunk, because, frankly it's an"out-there" device for the soap. But I'd been loving it - mostly because Y&R too time to develop the chipmunk as a logical "character" that stood up very well on his "own" (that's a lot of quotes). I was actually sad to see the chipmunk go yesterday.
That's why I have such high hopes for Rafe - Y&R builds characters, they don't tie actors around a plot. They took week's to build a schizophrenic manifestation of a chipmunk, where ATWT dropped the twins by parachute into Oakdale, and it sounds like they're about to do it again with Col. Mayer, thereby resetting what I think of the entire basis of Luke & Noah's arguments.
Y&R is a classic character drama. I don't know what they plan to do with Rafe. They really can't pair him with Adam, who was just yesterday sleeping with that ADA. They'll have to bring someone in. But he follows the mold of some great Y&R characters - raised from poor, headed to powerful, a family relationship to a servant. They've built long-lasting characters this way in the past, Brad, Nikki, Jill, Drucilla, etc. I'm going to trust they can do it again.
Long live the chipmunk!
Y&R again...
I'm cautiously optimistic about Y&R. The show is great at focusing on characterization but that strength is strongest with the established characters and those tied to them. New characters tend to jump around until they find their footing (I hear Chloe had a few different histories until they figured her out, for example). So, for me, Rafe is a nervous game of "wait and see". Then again, that may be a long-standing grudge over the "As the World Revolves Around Christine" years.
That said, I think Nina is coming back sometime this week and hopefully the rumors about her having a connection to Rafe will come true. That will help get Rafe established... though it doesn't mix with the connections that hint at a relationship with Adam (which would make it possible for Rafe and Heather to build a personal rivalry just before they face each other in court -- maybe with Adam as a defendant?)
Y&R Superiority
Not quite all cylinders
Writing on Y&R and the State of Brothers and Sisters
I will have to disagree on Y&R's writing. Sans the the last year and half of Lynn Marie Lantham's stint as head writer almost two years back, Y&R has always had a pretty solid writing team. Not always the best but still solid for the most part. Not every storyline is a winner, but what show has all stellar storylines playing out at the same time? The Kevin and the Chipmunk s/l is different. I didn't know how to take it at first and last week it really got out of hand. However, this week I finally saw its purpose to show us Kevin's fractured psyche. Also perhaps make us feel more sorry for him and sorta gloss over many of the bad things he (and his family) have done over the years.
I really am not liking most of the storylines on Brothers and Sisters. I was never a fan of Justin/Rebecca as a couple. I totally saw it coming as soon as there was an inkling she wasn't a Walker and had hoped they wouldn't go there. Throwing the totally unlikeable, scheming, evil Ryan into the mix doesn't help the situation much. Holly has had little to do this season; she is the one that really brings the drama into the Walker den. Totally need more of her. Kitty and Robert's marital issues are unappealing because I am not a fan of Robert and Kitty is not high up on my list either. I will say her emotional affair with the single dad is the most interesting thing I've found about her since season 1. If it gets rid of Robert then all the better. What's going on with Saul and his new beau? Kevin and Scotty got no real s/l this season. Sarah has been all over the place. Something definitely hasn't been clicking this season.

This Week's Poll
Pushing Daisies
Daddy dearest
DHK
I love DHK. He's a soap actor I've enjoyed since he was on Ryan's Hope back in the day. But his return is just a reminder of what a horrible mistake the show made by making Col Mayer a raging psychopath, not to mention killing off Noah's mother who was played by the fabulous Robin Mattson, one of daytime's best actresses. Whenever I think of the delicious story potential of having a diva bitch Cheri going up against Lily, especially if Cheri decided to go after Holden with Luke and Noah caught in the middle of the mess, it's one of the reasons why ATWT irritates me so with their plot, plot, plot style of writing and tendency to always go for the obvious. But more than that, enough of the daddy issue stories.
We've had Col. Mayer twice, Damian twice, Brian Wheatley and now Col. Mayer again. And also, another story where someone is trying to kill Luke. Granted, since birth, Luke's life has constantly been at risk and he has escaped death more times just about anybody on ATWT, but the show is just being lazy. The show continues to write Luke as a classic soap heroine always being victimized by evil. And well, the presence of Col. Mayer brings out all the qualities in Noah that makes me despise the character, so there's that.
Killing off Noah's mother ...
was a horrible mistake! The fabulous Robin Mattson was absolutely delicious in the role of Cheri Love (Charlene Mayer). And how fun it was to see Oakdale's resident madam mix it up with Emilloon, Dusty DoRight, and even the geeky Deadwood. A story showing Cheri and Noah trying to reconnect the disconnect of their lives could have been so interesting. Instead of Winston actually killing his ex, they should have made it a near-fatal case of attempted murder with Cheri ending up in some half-vegatative state until the time was ripe for her to wake up and smell the lattes brewing at Java.
Agreed!
Killing off Noah's mom was a big mistake. Esepcially since she was played by Robin Mattison.. She's been on a number of shows but I remember her on AMC when she took over as Janet "from another planet". I love your what if scenarios if she wasn't killed and Col. Mayer didn't descend into the cliched psychopath killer for no apparent reason.
Plot driven drama ruins the integrity of the characters. And so many of the characters on ATWT have been ruined from what I can see the past couple of years.
Once upon a time I died. And like my namesake I got better.
Col. Mayer
I'm looking forward to this, mostly because I feel pretty certain we'll see Col, Mayer facing off against Damian, something I was hoping would happen as soon as I heard Damian was coming back.
To be honest, that's all I really care about. Hopefully Damian can stay semi-reformed enough to be siding with the boys against whatever machinations the colonel has planned. And since Noah clearly has some (still unspoken) daddy issues tied up in his views of Damian, it could do more to cement Damian as a father-substitute, which could have interesting implications.
I doubt the show would go there, but I'd love to see Damian actually wind up closer to Noah than Luke even after Luke puts aside his bloodlust, since it would lead to some interesting dynamics between the boys as well as amongst the whole broader Snyder/Walsh/Grimaldi/Mayer nexus.
Damian v.s. Col. Mayer
Holden (and some Butters)
I actually find Holden's character pretty consistent with how it's been at least for the past few years. I'm currently watching the full episodes posted to Youtube that begin with Noah's first appearance, and the way Holden acted during the Meg-Craig wedding was almost exactly how he's acting here.
You may be right about long-term prospects, but it's also possible that the writing is currently "siding" with Damian to help in his rehabilitation after how evil he was last time around. It's still possible that once this story establishes Damian as a viable character, they could do a more balanced competition. It's even probable, since it seems likely that the longer-term Damian plans seem to be working towards a new variation of the Damian/Lily/Holden triangle, and we know it's going to end with Lily and Holden together. So assumably at some point the writers will be bringing him back to the positive.
Did anyone else notice that Casey seems to be taking relationship advice from Luke? I can just imagine Luke telling him "Tell her that she's afraid to let herself feel her feelings. That's always an automatic win with Noah. He usually makes out with me immediately."
Damian vs. Col. Mayer
I agree, the writing for Holden is terrible. We can only hope Damian betrays Luke again. Also, I will be interested to see Dusty as Noah's real father not Mayer. We would have Col Mayer vs Dusty vs. Holden... I would like the show to send Damian back to Malti soon with the Nu Lily..
great job
Rafe is not coming out
To me, it was VERY refreshing...
...perhaps because I'm a gay man of a certain age, I've had my fill of angsty, dramatic coming out scenes; yes, my own coming out was angsty and dramatic, but now that I'm older and more confident in who I am, it was nice to see that represented on TV, especially on a soap opera. To me, it was a great message: here's this handsome, smart, successful, personable man, who's so confident and self-aware that he can just off-handedly come out to another person, with no fear or shame in who he is.
Angsty, dramatic coming out stories will probably be necessary for the forseeable future; but, at the same, it's a sign of growth in our culture that "coming out" can also be portrayed so casually, almost routine.
And I'm sure we'll learn a great deal more about Rafe in the coming weeks.
Jake's Acting
Having watched Passions for more years than I care to admit, I must say that Jake Silbermann is a far cry from some of the worst actors I've seen on a soap opera. The show did have some gems in Justin Hartley (now on Smallville as Green Arrow) and his wife, Lindsey Hartley and the always fab Juliet Mills. But some of the recasts were just awful. I never found myself thinking of Jake as being awful. He's come a long way and acting across from the dynamic Van Hansis has definitely helped him along the way. He definitely can push it further with Noah's emoting, which I think he has been doing a bit better with in the last couple of months. He still needs to push it further and give it his all.
