Gays of our Lives (June 02, 2009)

My vote would be...

for C:Neither. I like Forbes. He's hot and can actually act. But why does Mason have to be romantically linked with either of the boys. He could be like a father figure or big brother to Noah. And be a friend to the guys. No reason the show can't have three gay characters. Four if Mason gets his own love interest.

I'm really enjoying AWZ, and Fisica o Quimica right now. Even Forbidden Love, Jo and Thore make so much with what little time they are being given together. My favorite part in the tennis game, was when Christian hit the serve into the net. And Olli went to get it and said,"Alright I'm getting a divorce." Heh.

Speaking of Forbes March. Does anyone watch OLTL? Is the actor who plays Officer Fish (yes that's right) Chris Evan's gay brother? They seem to be maybe thinking about hooking his character up with Kyle. Who I recognize as the actor who played Tim on One Tree Hill.

the love triangle

I agree with you, right now i don't think it'll be a good idea Noah (or Luke) have an affair with Mason.

I think it'll be better if Mason began to play an important role in the boys life, and if they decide to go on the love triangle, will be better when Mason has some importance as character.

Right now the only way a love triangle works is make Kevin come out of the closet, because he is a known characters, Luke has issues with him, and Noah become all possesive and territorial everytime Kevin is in the same room.

To make work a love triangle they need that the third one will be able to make the audience feel some empathy, and that needs time. And it'll be a good idea if they test the chemistry of Mason with both boys before decide who will be the one.

But the truth is that Nuke are really together only since january (without ameeras and military problems) and before even thinking in an affair, they need to solve some relationship issues and have fun (a funny storyline will be good).

I'm concern about the Col Mayer storyline, i don't think it's posible that Winston change his mind, so probably this lead to a attemp to kill luke again. I don't have nothing against a little thriller, if they solve Noah's problems about his father, because he needs to solve that to grow as character

Look.....

..... despite what many regular readers of this column might think, I'm not for having a triangle just for the sake of one.  But I am an fan of old school, tried and true soap stories and a love triangle is about as old school and tried and true as it gets.  I know many fans only want Luke and Noah to stare adoringly each other, continually professing their love, but that quite frankly, doesn't make good drama.  Nor does having Mason turn out to be Noah's secret brother or cousin or any of the other scenarios I've seen folks spinning to avoid a classic soap tale when the simpliest is the best story that should be told.   And frankly, this show is not going to hire a hot, talented and well known soap actor and not throw him in the middle of these guys.  Let's be real about that shall we?

Now I'm not saying that Mason should show up and suddenly either Luke or Noah start dropping their pants for him.  That wouldn't be realistic.  I think the show should take their time, let us get used to and like Mason and weave him into Luke and Noah's lives and the fabric of Oakdale over a period of time.   And yes, testing the chemistry between Luke and Mason or Noah and Mason is essential because the 'other' couple has to be just as viable as Luke and Noah are in order to of real interest and rooting value.  The best triangles are ones where fans are torn as to who should be with whom because any of the prospective couplings could work.

Just for a little perspective, when Forbes March came on to OLTL, he was in the interloper in the popular Jessica/Antonio pairing.   But despite that, with good storytelling and great chemistry, Nash won the girl and they became a very beloved pairing in their own right.  I think there's not just the potential for good drama, but to give the Luke and Noah storyline some heat and interest that hasn't been there, IMO, in a very long time.  And if L/N were to split and pair off with other people, every supercouple worth their salt, including Holden and Lily have done that.   And in the end, if it's meant to be, Nuke will triumph.

Totally, totally agree

The primary reason that I gave up on ATWT was the ridiculous after ridiculous after ridiculous storylines TPTB were giving Nuke, and to just have them staring adoringly into each other's eyes before the occasional argument over who had the worst bio-dad. I was getting impatient for that ultimate of classic soap opera stories: the romantic triangle. And it's never come along--not even the Brian storyline approached it that way.

Right now, on Y&R, the neverending Sharon/Nick/Phyllis triangle is still gripping--though, I'll admit, why smart women like either Sharon or Phyllis would pine after a brainless drip like Nick is beyond me--but it's the writing and acting by the women (plus interlopers like Jack, Billy, etc.) that make it gripping.

I'm waiting for the day when we see something like this--a really classic romantic triangle--between three guys. I suspect Y&R will go there first before ATWT does.

At the rythym

they are developing Rafe character the love triangle could be in a decade or more
Anthony D. Langford's picture

Y&R

The thing about Y&R is that they take their sweet time to tell a story.   They don't rush anything.  It can be frustrating, because you're waiting for things to just get going, but it works for them.  But I'm fairly certain that come July, August and forward, they'll be knee deep in their gay storylines.
jjose712's picture

I hope so

because right now it reminds me a south american soap (and that's not good). It's good that the guy who played Adam is gone, because he has zero chemistry with Rafe.

I really hope their gay storyline become a success, one succesfull gay soap couple could be luck, but two it's a tendency

They've Come a Long Way

Storylines on Y&R are actually told in a quicker pace than they used to be.  It could take a good year before a storyline concluded some 12 years ago.  But yes, on average, their storylines take a bit longer to develop & play out.  What the elongated pace of the show allows for is more time to make the character's motivations seem more plausible.  Getting the audience to understand a character's motivation creates empathy and makes us invest in the character's lives.  So the "slower" pace works for Y&R and the types of stories they try and tell.  ATWT's breakneck story pace doesn't give you a chance get into a character's head to figure out why they are doing this, that or the other.  Most of the time characters' actions make no kinda sense and so the storylines become more about the plot than the characters involved.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

jjose712's picture

We'll see

All people thinks Y&R storyline will be great, but i'm not so sure, Rafe is a mere barely there character, and nobody cares about someone who doesn't have screen time. I hope they invest in him soon.

About ATWT, they need to slow it down a bit. A slower pace will make better storylines and better performacnces. It'll be good if they invest more in the characters and less in the action, it'll be good if the screen time was more equal, some popular characters are barely on screen and some others people hate are in every episode. They need to focus more on family issues, a kidnapping or a crime storyline is ok, but you can't have one every week

jjose712's picture

It's a question of time

Right now a love triangle is not viable. Luke and Noah are really together only four months, at least four months of real relationship without Ameeras, and they spend their time investigating crimes and being kidnapped, and then the Col will come and this will be probably another killing attemp or another kidnapping storyline (and i'm not against that).

I think they need to have a proper relationship before introduce a third (introduce him as the third, becuase i think the guy needs to be known before became a potential love interest for one of the boys). They need to come out and play, to have fun, and make plans together and make new friends.

After that i don't have any problem with the love triangle, in fact the mere posibility could be interesting. But i think most of the couples face a lot more troubles as couple before the third comes.

And yes, testing chemistries is the correct way to do it, in fact it could be interesting if thy introduce two temptations instead of one, and one of the couple resist the temptation and the other sucumbs.

I think one of the main problems i have with the posibility of Noah cheating on Luke are than i sick and tired of the jelousy Luke (but i like the jelosy Noah the rare times he was jelous), and i think the fans are hard on Noah (he was a very bad boyfriend till january) and probably don't forgive him

ATWT Triangle?

I've stopped watching the show, but I do check in with this column and the daily recaps to see if things have gotten any better.  (ie. has Meg died in a horrible horrible accident with no chance of ever being seen again in Oakdale?  Did Paul die in the same accident?  And Dusty?)  Also, has the writing gotten any better?

I don't mind triangle stories as long as they aren't "all of a sudden" and plausible.  (does one of them have a legitimate reason to cheat?)

Given the speed with which stories come and go on this show, taking the "proper time" to get this character involved in the general fabric of the show (ie. has he done something nice for Meg? or has he helped Alli and Casey mend their relationship issues?  Did he solve a crime instead of Margo?  All three?) equals roughly three weeks at the hands of Goutman and Passante(sp?).

In real life that would equal about a year.

Dobie, wants a girl to call his own?

You are probably already aware that you are performing an invaluable service, Anthony, in bringing us the latest clips from these shows. The truth is, I'm not much of a soap fan, but I love Christian and Ollie. So when I was in Berlin last week I tried watching an episode of VL on ARD and found it very hard to focus. Two minutes of the boys washing dishes at the sink, and eighteen minutes about a bunch of boring rich people. As I said, in making these clips available, you perform an invaluable service--otherwise, when the gay characters aren't on screen, soaps are mindlessly boring! By the way, I was watching "Angels and Demons" the other day (yes, I am that bored) and was surprised to see Stephen Franken as Cardinal Colbert. Franken has never really been out of work in Hollywood, but he has kept a pretty low profile since the 1960s, when he starred as Chatsworth Osbourne Jr. (this is Rush Limbaugh's nickname for Tucker Carlson, by the way) on "Dobie Gillis." He went on to practically steal the film "The Party" from Peter Sellers before disappearing into obscurity. My point in mentioning him is to say that he was an early TV "role model" for young gays (love those riding breeches!) who were looking for themselves on screen. Not that the character was played as gay (he actually replaced Warren Beatty, who had played a similar role on "Dobie"), but he dressed flamboyantly and was kept firmly under his "Mumsey's" thumb. She called him her "nasty, nasty boy." Just thought a Chatsworth sighting was worth a mention.

OLTL and Officer Fish

"Is the actor who plays Officer Fish (yes that's right) Chris Evan's gay brother? They seem to be maybe thinking about hooking his character up with Kyle. Who I recognize as the actor who played Tim on One Tree Hill."

Yes, that is Chris Pine's brother. And I've noticed the chemistry between him and Kyle but I wonder if that was a red-herring as we got towards the end of the KAD murder mystery. I hope not, that would be an interesting story if it came out that they were messing around in secret while in the same frat in college and still had feelings for each other.

Forbes March

I'm blown away by Forbes March's comments about Christianity, and how it SHOULD intersect with gay people and gay issues. They were so eloquent and so perfectly in line with what I think of as "real" Christianity. I have a straight atheist friend who thinks the only way to save the world is to get rid of the Christians. The problem is, that's so totally unrealistic. You might as well plan to convert 50% of the population to being gay in order to enact gay marriage. No, Christians aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and that's fine. So instead of banging our heads against walls, let's encourage more Christians to think like Forbes. Fortunately, there are signs that younger Christians are moving in exactly that direction.

On another subject, I actually would prefer that Forbes' character not get into a triangle with Nuke. Partially, it's because of what Jose says above about not enough time yet passing to make the relationship truly serious and realistic. But mostly it's because it always annoys me that whenever a new character comes onto a show it's always for the purpose of getting involved with a current gay character. In real life that would certainly not be inevitable, and I'd like to see a gay character that specifically DOESN'T come aboard just for that reason. In real life gay people are often just friends, but on TV all gay characters seem like they MUST hook up. That's not realistic, and I think it likely provides a faulty image to straight folks when that ALWAYS happens on TV.

New interview with Y&R Yani Gellman (Rafe)

Michael Fairman interviews Y&R's Yani Gellman for advocate.com; Gellman of course doesn't spoil anything (well he hints--and after the conversation between Paul and Nikki today about his Aunt Estella, I have ideas about what might happen) and his managers (and probably the show) would not let him discuss the Chris Engen scandal. Most of all, I love how enthusiastic he is about playing the role and just being on Y&R (I LOL'd about his reaction to confronting Victor!):

Nice

Yani seems like a really down-to-earth, genuine guy.  I really enjoyed his second interview.  I really like the story about his mom on set.  If I were on set I don't know if I'd be able to separate actor from character.  There are a couple of characters I'd like to do bodily harm to.  LOL!
