GOOL THEATER

As The World Turns

I shouldn’t be shocked at this show’s ability to consistently ruin a good thing. After all, they’ve been doing it for years, which may partly be why the show is now being canceled.

When they stumbled into the Reid and Luke pairing (something I imagine the show never thought would take off and gain the fanbase it has), I was excited that at least there was something compelling to carry this show through its final days. But As the World Turns seems bound and determined to ruin this storyline with their usual hamfisted, illogical writing.

The show spent months building the attraction between Luke and Reid, having them give into their feelings, deal with the fallout of Noah learning about them and the ongoing conflict with Luke over which man he wanted. Luke's ultimate decision to pursue a relationship with Reid was a big moment in the storyline. Unfortunately, it happened off screen.

I literally said WTF when Luke and Reid started talking about their relationship as if they had decided to start dating and give things between them a serious chance. Because that never happened. And even if they had this conversation off screen, there’s no plausible or logical place where it could have happened. The last time we saw Reid and Luke together things were still uncertain between them. Reid had been given his ultimatum, and Luke was still chasing Noah.

Would it have killed the show to give us a few scenes where Luke and Reid declare their romantic intent to one another despite the obstacles? Because making these incredible story leaps really damages one of the few remaining bright spots on this show.
