Gays of our Lives (June 23, 2009)

You're right about Eastenders. The pacing on that show now is terrible. Remember when Danielle was killed? Most characters forgot after about a week, aside from Ronnie, who is painted as a pathetic baby-hungry loon for mourning her. Janine, who hit Danielle with her car, cried for a few days and is now happy and carefree, and hanging out with Roxy, who was Danielle's aunt. I don't hold out a lot of hope for this story with Syed and Christian. It's very rushed, and Santer has said there won't be any other kisses between them. From his comments, this will not even be about Christian. Since Christian has been a plot device throughout his entire time on the show, why would this be different? The most interesting part of this was that the BBC website had, for a few hours, another version of the Syed/Christian kiss which was much more aggressive (Syed pushed him against the freezer). I guess they would rather go with the tamer, less controversial one, especially if there won't be a relationship.

Thank you for the semi-nude Hollyoaks photo, I hadn't seen that. Most of the guys on that show would be more tolerable if they get naked as often as possible. Anthony Quinlan is GORGEOUS with that short haircut. I love his chest, especially with the fur. I'm also glad Kent Riley has some fur.

I think Y&R has deliberately shown us little about Rafe, or his relationship with Adam, because his only purpose seems to be to shock viewers when things heat up with Adam. It's all about Adam. We will see how desperate Adam is, so desperate that he has sex with a man. This whole story seems to be about shocks, or what the show sees as shocks. Like Ashley being examined by a doctor who sexually abuses female patients.

I know what you mean about Fish on OLTL but I think he's supposed to be stiff, that's part of his personality. I don't believe that they somehow just decided to put Kyle and Fish together because of sparks between them. They may not have originally brought the characters on for this purpose, but from their first scene together, there was obviously heavy subtext.

Joseph's picture

I love Scott Evans as Fish

With all due respect, Anthony, I must humbly disagree with your assessment of Scott Evans' portrayal of Fish. That "stiffness" you speak of is part of Fish's character; having watched previous clips on youtube, it's clear that Fish is very socially awkward and that, combined with him being in denial of homosexuality, has made him put up a guard. I also think Evans has terrific comic timing--the scenes a few months ago when Stacy seduced Fish and he responded by showing up the next day with flowers and declaring his lifelong devotion were marvelously played--a tightrope act of humor and pathos, which he pulled off beautifully. And his chemistry with Brett Claywell is in the stratosphere!

Thanks...

Thank you for your thoughts.  I agree that Scott and Brett have terrific chemistry.... and it's hard for me to believe the show didn't plan this from the start, especially since the writers at OLTL have been itching to do a gay storyline for quite some time, I understand.  As for Evans, I admit I haven't been watching OLTL so I'm unfamiliar with the character and am just now getting to know him.... and the show in general.   I hadn't seen him in any other scenes other than Kyle until last week's scene with Layla and Cristian.  I'll have to see if I can find those scenes you're talking about online to give me a fuller picture of the character and a better handle of what he's all about.

Oliver Fish

If you search Youtube for "Oliver Fish," it should turn up a bunch of older Fish clips for you.  (I tried to insert some sort of terrible fish pun there, but I couldn't think of one without twisting the sentence so much as to destroy the humor.  My apologies.)

Defft's picture

Agree about Fish, Disagree about Kyle

I agree that Scott Evans has done a good job giving sincerity and subtlety to a stock character (the geeky doofus is often WAY overplayed, i.e. Pete Cortlandt on AMC, the geek on Passions, etc.--usually really hot guys in big glasses).

I'm not so convinced about Kyle.  As a minor villain and convenient plot device in the transplant and serial killer storylines, he was okay.  However, I find his acting to be stilted and uncomfortable to watch now that he has more than one or two lines.

I'm thinking that this might be another case of us, the gay audience, being so happy to have any kind of representation on screen that we are willing to overlook less than stellar acting.

Then again, Susan Lucci has been popular for 40 years, and she ain't no Meryl Streep.

Glenn's picture

I thought Kyle (OLTL) looked

I thought Kyle (OLTL) looked so familiar and the naked cowboy pic made me remember. He's the dimwitted friend/teammate from One Tree Hill. I remember him in another scene where he's only wearing a leopard-printed thong where he thought Nathan's mother was coming on to him and prepared himself to seduce and/or be seduced.

Quick question...

Is there some text missing between pages 4 and 5? All of a sudden, Luke and Noah were in blacked-out Shiloh (which might be interesting, come to think of it).
Anthony D. Langford's picture

Yeah....

There is something missing there. We'll have that fixed, thanks!

With respect to Scott Evans,

With respect to Scott Evans, I agree with Joseph above. I went back and watched all of the OLTL clips that featured Oliver Fish, and Mr. Evans has done a remarkable job of portraying this lovable, fumbling techie who is extremely inept around women who is nevertheless easily able to make a stark and remarkable transformation whenever he's around Brett Claywell's Kyle Lewis. I believe the actors stated they knew something happened between their characters in the past but not necessarily something sexual.  I suppose the writers picked up on the onscreen chemistry that viewers saw between Ollie and Kyle, et voila: this upcoming gay storyline with Ollie Fish and Kyle Lewis. I find both to be extremely talented actors, and the dynamics with Fish being the law-abiding one whereas Lewis isn't above blackmail make for one soapylicious story.

That Christian and Syed kiss on EASTENDERS came out of nowhere just like that initial kiss between Luke and Noah on ATWT. Both had no developments whatsoever and the kisses in both indeed sprang without warning from a story progression perspective notwithstanding spoilers.   I suppose it's controversial enough that Muslim groups are protesting this story in the UK? Oh, and it didn't help that Syed's lady is named "Amira," thereby making the inevitable comparisons to ATWT all the easier to make.

Looking forward to VERBOTENE LIEBE as always as well as the Y&R story and the replacement of Chris Engen with Michael Muhney in the role of Adam. Why do I get the feeling that we're going to get the mother of all coming out stories in U.S. daytime with Thom Bierdz's return as Phillip Chancellor III to Genoa City?  Why fake a death and return home 20 years later?  Hmmm.

Great job as always!

Well, 'THE' personal question did get asked.. And answered....

.... in one of the South African interviews. Luke was asked : (from Beeld, South Africa)

"You play a gay character. Is it difficult for you or are you gay yourself?

I am gay.

So it’s not hard for you?

No, I have made the decision to be open about my sexuality. It’s just an aspect of my life like anything else. Just because I’m gay, doesn’t mean Scotty and I are the same in the least, though. I’ve had wonderful support from all the characters and especially from Matthew, because he plays my husband and is definitely not gay. He is open minded and never uncomfortable with anything. It’s truly a witness to his abilities as an actor."

AFAIK, this is the first time Luke has been directly quoted saying 'I am gay'

I know he continues to refuse talking with AE...He has his reasons....

I hope he will have a change of heart on that sometime ... soon..

Luke MacFarlane Came Out In the Globe and Mail in Apr 2008

After Elton did a story referencing the article

http://www.afterelton.com/blog/brianjuergens/luke-macfarlane-brothers-and-sisters-comes-out-as-gay

It was very widely read and publicized.

I don't think he has given many interviews sense but he has definitely been out for a year now.

Oh, I am very very much aware of that G&M article......

If you read it carefully, he is not directly quoted as saying he is homosexual. It's spoken of only indirectly. This has been the case in every other interview he's given since. While there is no doubt for 99% of us he is an Out  gay man, this lack of directness has given wiggle room to some 'fangirls' ( on certain other websites) to believe otherwise.

OneWorld's picture

Actually, he does say he is gay to the Globe and Mail...

Luke MacFarlane said to the Globe and Mail, "From a standing outside perspective, and also as someone who is gay, I think that it's a very exciting time."

When an someone says "as someone who is gay," this is equivent to saying, "I am gay!" Plus the Globe and Mail is NOT a tabloid, it is a serious newspaper so it would never speculate about someone's sexuality unless it was confirmed!

"as someone who is gay,"

You and I ... and most of the rest of the world, would agree that

"this is equivent to saying, "I am gay!" Plus the Globe and Mail is NOT a tabloid, it is a serious newspaper so it would never speculate about someone's sexuality unless it was confirmed! "

However, you would be amazed at the convoluted logic used to claim Luke was refering to his character Scotty and/or the whole article was 'an April Fool's joke'. I'm refering to a year long Datalounge thread ('Luke Macfarlane comes out of the closet) mind you, so that should explain a lot....

BTW.. it's 'Mac-f-arlane', not '-F-' ... Minor detail, but, hey, I obviously like to split hairs...

Dave Doty's picture

Luke Macfarlane

Well, even if he said "I am gay," they could STILL claim he was talking in character, or it was an April Fool's prank.  There's not a magical linguistic formula that will dispel willfull ignorance.  There is no reasonable argument that he wasn't out after the earlier interview.  And he's not responsible for the UNreasonable arguments.

Also, 1000 points!  Woo!  Wait, what?  Without value like a FOX!

Y&R pace and ATWT writers

I don't have any problem with Y&R pace (maybe because i only watch Rafe clips) but i think the character development is poor being generous. They spend no time in make the audience know hints about Rafe, and i find that fundamental in a barely there character who will be involved in a main storyline.

Right now Rafe is a low risk investment, if he became popular it's ok, if he not succeed they could write off him and nobody will notice the difference. I only hope the character grows now that the proper storyline begins, because we not know anything about him (in fact it's hard to say if Yanni is a good actor or not with so limited screen time)

About ATWT writer, only two words, Fire them. Come on, one thing is being a bad writer (the pace here is the opposite than in the Y&R, i'm not a fan of the slow pace, but this rushing pace is even worse), and other different is being just stupid. And i doubt that there are inteligent life in the head o JP. A really high percentage of the audience hates Meg, and she is everywhere. In all polls Nuke are the most popular couple of the show (and one of the most populars of all soaps), Van and Jake individually are in the lead of most popular actors of the show, and Van is the only male nominated to an Emmy. It's not very clever underused your more popular characters.

One good writer, smart enough to give the characters of the show the screen time that they deserve, will make ATWT the third show in the ratings in no time. But if they continue this way, the ratings will be lower and lower

Thoughts

Josh Marrow's abs might be enough to justify his selection as Soap Stud of the Week, but, my goodness...he (and his character) have been dreadful in the last few weeks. His character's actions have been duplicituous and Morrow's performances have been lifeless (a contrast made even starker by playing opposite the always effusive Michelle Stafford). The only thing that guy does that's worth watching is taking his clothes off...

Anthony D. Langford wrote:
I do have a problem though, and that is that Scott Evans comes off as a bit stiff in his performance. I'm not sure if that’s an acting choice, as Oliver is trying to keep himself under control and maintain some sort of façade, or if it's more about acting ability.
Interesting perspective. Personally, I'd always found Fish to be a little stilted and socially awkward, so his behavior in that scene seemed perfectly normal to me.
Anthony D. Langford wrote:
But an even bigger issue I have is that I think the writers should have spent a bit more time developing Rafe as a character before this week’s episodes put him in the middle of the action.
I totally agree with you on this point. The thing that worries me most about this pairing is how little we know about Rafe--it's much harder to feel sympathy for his character when there's no emotional connection to his character.
Anthony D. Langford wrote:
Does Cristian Vega know a ‘mo when he does one? Probably not, but he thinks something smells funny regarding Officer Oliver Fish and warns Layla not to date him. But like any woman without working gaydar, Layla ignores Cristian’s advice.
I missed a few episodes late last week, but during the scene at the park, it seemed like Layla's gaydar was working, as she picked up on the vibe between Fish and Kyle. If she's ignoring it, it's only because she's attempting to stifle the feelings she has for her comatose sister's boyfriend.

Agree on Nick Newman

I totally agree Josh Morrow's Nick Newman has been acting like a major douche the past several weeks.  In general the character is a tool.  It is his ability to beleive the things he says when he says them that are his saving grace for most people I think.  And that the actor that plays him is fine as hell.  With all of Nick's flaws I still am not at all feeling any sympathy for his current wife Phyllis' "woe is me" routine, Nick is ruining his family with her & their daughter etc etc.  That all may be true but she wasn't that concerned about the family he had with his then wife Sharon while Nick & her were burning up the sheets.  She can't ask for concern or consideration when didn't give none before.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Joseph's picture

My beef with Nick/Joshua Morrow

I literally can't stand Nick; Joshua Morrow may have a great body, but that's it--as an actor, he's thoroughly dull and utterly lacking in charisma, he plays every scene the same--wooden and boring. It boggles my mind that a dynamic and smart woman like Phyllis would be so gaga over him!
Defft's picture

Meathead

Ever since they SORASed Nick Newman years ago, I've thought that he was nothing but a stupid meathead.  Not sure if Josh Morrow is an incredible actor very successfully playing an idiot, or if he is just dull and slow himself.

He reminds me of that guy from Real World San Diego, Brad Fiorenza.  Maybe he does have a heart of gold, but he's sure dumb as dirt.

VK's picture

Cassie's Death

The best I've seen Josh as Nick was when Cassie died.  That was his best performance to date.  He did great in displaying Nick's love for his adopted daugther.  I usually don't cry at soaps but I did during that scene.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Y&R

While I am happy for any gay visibility on TV, I'm not quite sure how I feel about the potential Rafe/Adam pairing on Y&R. Will Adam really have feelings for Rafe? Will he just lead him on? If there are feelings there, the writers have given no indication that Adam leans that way. It will be interesting to see how this storyline plays out. I have been watching Y&R for nearly my entire life (30 years) as I grew up watching it with my mother. In fact, to this day it is still one of our go-to conversation pieces. The more I think about this potential storyline the more I wonder about how those who are less supportive of gay rights and equality (like my mother) will view it. If it's just a storyline about sex it could be problematic...
Anthony D. Langford's picture

I'm Only Going To Say....

That I think folks should not pre-judge the story.  It's totally not what it appears to be at face value.   Y&R is going to throw in a twist or two that some might find suprising.
jjose712's picture

The same that i said about the praise

The same that i said about the praise that Y&R recieve since they announce this storyline (in my opinion it's more the anticipation than the real storyline right now, in fact i'm totally disapointed about how they develop Rafe till now) i say about this kind of critic.

Better we saw what they have to show us, and then we can judge. I have hopes that this could be great. The head writer seems very interested in this storyline, and of course you can make something with all your good intention and fail, but i hope they can bring an interesting storyline. Specially because this one will be different than ATWT and OLTL, were they invest in the gay couple from the begining (well in the case of OLTL we'll see what happens but it seems they are going that route) and here is something different, we don't know how Rafe will react, if Adam finally develop a real interest in him, or if a third will be the key in the storyline.

My only concern is that they don't make Rafe a dumb.

VK's picture

Give It a Chance

I know I'm a bit biased as Y&R is my fave soap, but I'm going to give this Rafe/Adam thing a chance.  The way so many twists and turns and surprises have been popping up lately in the storytelling I'm sure the Adam/Rafe thing will have some as well.

And again as far as the pacing goes, beleive me, it used to be much, much worse than it is now.  Personally I like the pacing for the most part because you get to see nice character beats and interactions that you miss on ATWT and B&B.  B&B you give a bit of leeway to because it is a 30 min soap.  I totally concede that Y&R's pacing tends to give you a number of episodes somewhat blah because not much happens.  BUt I think there are far fewer of those these days than in the recent past.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Dave Doty's picture

Y&R

Even if it is a storyline about just sex, I don't see that as a problem.  That in itself might be a TV first in a non-gay oriented series.  People have often commented on the tendency to make the gay characters squeaky-clean as an act of PC.  As a result, when the gay characters get relationships at all, they're usually true-blue Nuke type relationships.  Given how often soap relationships are sexual, or based on blackmail or greed or whatever, we're well overdue.

OTOH, I'm very happy to hear other people complain about the Y&R pacing, since I thought I was the only one being bored to tears by it.  That, and the fact that after a couple of months, some of the stories are STILL confusing to me.  Contrast with OLTL, which I was able to find my way around after just a couple of days (at least on the current, relevant relationships and storylines.)

oh my god you have the hardest job!

Anthony, this is what ... page 19!?!?! you did great in the recapping and also giving us little hints in the future. i haven't watched Christian and Olli in a long time and it was great seeing the lake scene. Now that's chemistry, America's soaps could learn a thing or two.great job !

Tuesday's OLTL with Fish/Kyle

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VGTSduTofs : Gigi asks Natalie and Jared to drop the charges against Kyle; Schuyler confronts Kyle at the gym; Cris and Fish question each other about their interest in Layla; Fish suggests Layla take a job at the police station; Fish has an awkward run-in with Kyle at the gym.

Y&R Thurs and Fri! (SPOILERS)

Rafe will be on Thursday's episode, defending his Aunt Estella in court, and talking to Nikki, which is where he gets suspicious of Adam (Michael Muhney takes over the role tomorrow as well); Friday, he heads to the Newman Ranch, which is when Adam seduces him. Possibly a live-blog for this event?

Les bleus?

I notice Ztube31 used to upload Les Bleus episodes but he has not for over 2 months now and doesnt seem to be that active on his YT account, Have you another source for the show? Or any info? I am sure I am not the only one that misses it.

I think that it is clear why Scott Evans was stiff...

...in his scenes with David Fumero.

Be honest. You would be too.

Evans and Claywell seem to bring more charm to their developing role than I remember recognizing in the early days of Nuke. Since the latter morphed into the gay supercouple, I have a sneaking suspicion that File will follow suit.
Xkizzy's picture

Christian n Syed

i thought it was suppose to be a shock/twist the audience wouldn't see coming, not a relationship, hence the whole ep leading to the fight/kiss scene.

its kinda the soup kiss way, how affairs start etc.

or is it coz they're gay you want more?
