News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (June 23, 2009)

Hollyoaks

As interesting as the source of Ravi’s blackouts may be, I don't understand why Ravi let Caleb just knock him around like that with do something about it. Despite Ash's assertion, Ravi didn’t seem scared or fearful. So why didn’t he do anything when Caleb attacked him? That really made no sense to me as a viewer and the show didn’t bother to explain or clarify Ravi’s inability to fight for himself.

It’s almost as if Ravi sort of expected to get beaten up for being bisexual which, as viewers might recall, is not the first time that has happened. That's disturbing, but if that were the case, it could be a compelling storyline to explore. But I suspect that might be too heady for this show.

What’s causing Ravi’s blackouts?

As for Caleb, I think he’s written a bit over the top. The writers might do better to make him a more restrained character and less of a caricature, which is what they are dangerously close to doing. I do think the rivalry between Ash and Ravi is interesting and is the most intriguing aspect of this whole storyline. They clearly love each other, but are jockeying for a place in the world, in their families and with each other.

If the writers were smart, they’d let that angle be the focus of the story and not the clichéd plot points involving gay bashing.

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION

Luke: The best thing about the Bank of Damian? It’s open all hours
and you never have to worry about remembering your pin number

As The World Turns – While I’m still not digging this whole ‘Noah makes a movie’ arc because the film being shot seems as dull as its subject, I found some enjoyment in last week’s ATWT, mostly because Van Hansis showed us why Luke is such an engaging character and shouldn’t be in the background of any storyline.

Luke’s way of getting Noah the money for his movie, not to mention slightly manipulating Noah into taking it, was excellent characterization and showed that he is definitely the child of Holden, Lily and his pampered upbringing. Very few characters (especially on soaps) could have the self-awareness of being such a spoiled brat, but Luke has always been about honesty – save an unfortunate ballot box stuffing incident – and that honesty is mostly about himself and his flaws. That’s just one reason why the character is one of the most beloved on this show.
