News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (June 30, 2009)

It’s another jam packed edition of Gays Of Our Lives, with our round the world coverage of everything that’s gay in the world of soap, starting with GOOL Theater.

We’ve got several clips you simply do not want to miss including The Young and the Restless where we see the two different looking Adams (including and a romantic scene that has daytime audiences talking!) as well as EastEnders clips of Syed and Christian setting off some serious heat, and Hollyoaks’ bisexual Ravi getting some really bad news.

GOOL SCOOPS AND SPOILERS gives you all the dish on the latest drama caused by Noah’s homophobic killer dad on As The World Turns and the return of gay characters to Good Times, Bad Times and River City.

Also, find out why a One Life To Live actor was fired over yet another controversy about a gay storyline plus some casting news for Glee and Melrose Place in GOOL NEWSBEAT. Be sure not to miss the news behind the shocking (but not surprising) return of out actor Thom Beirdz to Y&R.

And as always, I've got SNAPSHOTS and our SOAP STUD OF THE WEEK!

BE AWARE THERE ARE A FEW NSFW WORDS IN THESE CLIPS!

Hollyoaks

Okay, I must admit something here: I cannot stand Hollyoaks. I think it’s an awful, awful soap opera and sitting through a week’s episodes is painful. This show has no focus, no overall theme or unifying arc. The acting, the writing, the stories … there’s nothing I like about this show. But as I must follow all things gay in soap, it is my duty to suffer silently (okay, not so silently!) and watch. I just had to get that off my chest. Now on with this week….

Ravi is horrified to having received a death sentence from his doctor…

I guess the main thing I like about Ravi’s storyline is that it’s not about his sexuality and that’s refreshing. It’s really an old style soap story, a character dealing with a potentially fatal illness and how it affects his life, and how it touches the people around him. Even better is that it’s a real illness and not some silly soap made up malady.

Unlike most of the stories on this show, this has the potential to be a strong and entertaining storyline that could be quite powerful. And it helps that Stephen Uppal is handling the role quite nicely up to this point. But knowing this show as I do, it won’t be long before it heads off the rails. Though I suppose I should try a little optimism, shouldn’t I?
