As The World Turns

Regular readers of this column know that I haven’t been exactly thrilled with this latest storyline for the boys, not that it’s really about them. They are just props for the Hughes family.

Even the return of Noah’s father from the dead isn’t really about Noah. There’s just far too much talent in Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann to be wasted as mere supporting players.

As for the storyline itself, it’s so ridiculous that you can’t even take it seriously. Col. Mayer is supposedly dead and a disgrace to the military, yet he’s ensconced on a military base, not to mention running around wearing fatigues with his name on them.

Then there’s the reveal that Riley is actually Adam Hughes, which was so obvious viewers knew it as soon as he showed up three weeks ago. And Margo Hughes continues to show why she’s Oakdale’s worst police officer (and why Luke and Noah seem to be solving all the cases in town) by seeing an armed Col. Mayer and lowering her gun.

Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann are fine with the little they are given to do, but there’s going to be little scenery left with all the munching Daniel Hugh Kelley as Col. Mayer is doing. It’s a shame too, because the actor is very talented.

Perhaps this is a sign that it’s best to put this character to rest for a good long while. I think they’ve gone to this well one too many times.

And I’ve come to realize that I was so enamored by Tom Dengen’s (Riley/Adam) pecs that I neglected to notice the actor is incredibly wooden. Oh well, the good thing is this drama will be over this week and probably forgotten by next. And for that I am grateful.
