Chrolli vlog

Anthony, you forgot to mention the Christian and Olli vlog at www.chrolli.de
Anthony D. Langford's picture

On the Contrary.....

I didn't forget at all.  I'll have something about it in the next GOOL.  And we just may have a little surprise in store in an upcoming edition as well.  ;-)

Chrolli?

I've only ever seen them called Ollian, and while it's not great, it's a much nicer word - Chrolli sounds like a disease! It's also three times more popular on Google. Why does there have to be a competing name?

Anonymous's picture

Chrolli

Chrolli is the name that Das Erste (the producers of the show) use.

I've always preferred Chrolli myself (because in my head its "Christian and Olli")

Viewers seem to be about half and half judging by websites and youtube channels.

"That's our job today: to control the extent to which people can publicly manifest antigay sentiment." (Bayard Rustin)  **   "Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common" (Dorothy Parker)

Dave Doty's picture

Competing Name

Until there's some sort of international standards organization for celebrity portmanteaus, I think people will just use the terms they want to use.  Sometimes this means people will use a different one that you would.  That's a horrible thing to have to live through, but there's not much to be done about it.

Nicely done again, Anthony!I

Nicely done again, Anthony!I am absolutely on pins and needles with this Oliver Fish (still a very unfortunate choice of a surname for a character) and Kyle Lewis saga on OLTL. I cannot wait for this story to go full speed ahead.

But what of Y&R? Who's going to end up with whom? With Thom Bierdz supposedly signed on for only six months coupled with the infamous snail's pace speed at which stories are told in Y&R, would that be enough time for Phillip Chancellor III to have a lover on the show WITHOUT Y&R chickening out on showing same-sex love in the afternoon?  And what will happen to heteroflexible Adam and Rafe?  And will the ageists have issues with pairing Phillip with the teenaged looking Rafe?  I really have to stay tuned.

Now you have got me intrigued on the VL vlog and your upcoming surprise!  I'm looking forward to it!

Anthony D. Langford's picture

UGH!

The OLTL story should pick up soon.  It looks like there's a big plot developement next week so we'll see how it plays out.

As for Thom, I wouldn't be shocked to hear that his stay has been extended.  I know he wants to stay as long as the show will have him.  Given how much story there is to be told and this characters unique place in history and on this show, I think he'll be around for awhile long enough for a romance.  At least I'm hoping so.  As for pairing Phillip and Rafe, IRL, we all know May/December gay couples.  I'm not sure if daytime is ready for it though.  We'll see.

Watch tomorrow's (Tuesday's) Y&R.  There's a couple of fun scenes with Adam and Rafe -- and Heather.

Jon's picture

So fast...and Kevin and Scotty

I'm still surprised at how fast the Y&R and EE stories are moving. Already most everyone knows Phillip is alive, and gay. I wish they had had more shading in the reactions of his loved ones. I would not want them to be homophobic NOW, but there would have been nothing wrong with saying that at the time Kay was opposed to homosexuality because of her bad experience when she briefly attempted a lesbian relationship in the late 70s. There also wouldn't have been anything wrong in pacing the story to be a bit slower. And EE, I just don't get the rush, especially since other stories, like Jack/Roxie/Ronnie, never go anywhere, ever.

I'm enjoying OLTL, and some of the foreign soaps (that new guy on Corrie is cute, too bad he will probably be history within a few months, they don't keep new characters around for very long now.

Kevin and Scotty -- it's just bad timing. The show has spent a year with Kitty and Robert and her baby obsession and now Kevin needs a baby too? Fans will hate the story because they're tired of this. Kevin and Scotty are their best couple and Matthew Rhys is one of their best actors -- why do they get the crumbs? And yet I am afraid of what will happen if this story isn't popular.

Dave Doty's picture

Y&R Pacing

Is someone actually complaining about Y&R's breakneck pace?  I think my brain just broke.

In all seriousness, I actually think it's refreshing that the plot is moving along at a reasonable pace, instead of having to repeat variations on the same scene for two weeks before making the next small advancement in the plot.  Although I shouldn't speak too soon.  For all I know, we're about to see that same argument we just witnessed with PC3, Kaherine, and Jill repeated for two weeks.

OTOH, I'm happy to have the Adam/Rafe drag as long as possible.  Not because I think it's so nuanced it needs that kind of room to develop properly, but just because it's so delightfully squirmy I want to watch Adam writhe for as long as possible.  Uh, metaphorically.  But only because I doubt I'll get to see him writhe physically.

I'm okay with the B&S baby story, in principle.  There were enough character-specific oddities in the Kitty/Robert story that there's plenty of room to take it in very different directions.  I'm definitely putting this one in a "time will tell" box.

Jon's picture

Slow pacing means getting viewers adjusted

"Is someone actually complaining about Y&R's breakneck pace?  I think my brain just broke."

Y&R has had very fast pacing for 4-5 years now. The only stories they drag out are nonsense few viewers care about (like the chipmunk obsession, or Sharon/Nick/Phyllis/Jack).The problem with fast pacing is that events which should be key are dumped on top of each other. Why did they need to have Phillip show up right after Cane revealed himself as a con? Why did everyone have to find out immediately? Why not have Katherine see him and then have a stroke and be taken to the hospital, then after she is in the hospital, Phillips comes to visit her and others begin to learn who he is?

Dave Doty's picture

Pacing

All I can think of right now is Katherine and Jill having the same tedious argument over and over again about whether Katherine was glad Jill wasn't her daughter.  If that's getting me adjusted, I'll pass.
VK's picture

Kevin & Scotty as Parents

I too am not feeling them becoming parents yet.  They were largely backburnered for all of last season.  I wanted to see more of them in that honeymoon stage first before the stork drops by.  And for them to buy a house.  What happened to all the drama from the changing of careers and money issues between them?  And after Robert and Kitty's baby drama, I don't want to deal with another baby entering the Walker clan.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Soap Archives

If you search Youtube for OLTLViewersChannel, there are playlists containing all OLTL episodes starting with 6/30/08.  This is after Fish's 2 or 3 day initial stint, but well before he returned as an ongoing character, and before Kyle's debut at all.  (Or Stacey's), so those storylines can be seen in their entirety.

I remember there were several months of complete ATWT episodes, beginning from Noah's first appearance, but I got distracted and stopped watching them, and now I can't even remember the account that posted them.

In Dollhouse? That pic of him tied to the bed looks like its from a episode recently aired in Britain. If it is then I really need to pay more attention to the TV!

To be fair, I think Philip

To be fair, I think Philip has a point. It's one thing to argue in 2009 that of course you wouldn't have been angry if your son/heir came out, and quite another thing to have actually reacted that way at the time.
Dave Doty's picture

One Thing and Another

OTOH, it's one thing to not speak to your family for 20 years because they reacted homophobically to your coming out, and it's another to not speak to them for 20 years because you assume they will, then come back and claim they drove you away as if they had actually done the thing you assumed they would do.

None of them will ever know how the situation would have played out, and if he's going to blame the last 20 years on their homophobia, he ought to have a little more evidence than his gut feeling that they were homophobic.

scotty and kevin....

kids, eh? well, all i know is....if thats the case, hopefully the story is done with justice and by that, i mean they better get enough screentime to play it out. dont want the show to be hogged by rebecca, kitty and robert and justin AKA last season

if it ends up like like that, forget it...

Mason on ATWT; OLTL's gay storyline

Many months ago when the news was announced that ATWT was going to introduce Noah's gay instructor, wasn't it also said by the powers that be that he wouldn't interfere with Luke and Noah's relationship? I really like OLTL, but this story needs to get more airtime. It's frustrating to only see them for 5 minutes..and that's on the episodes they are actually on. The good news is that the rest of OLTL is actually watchable, unlike ATWT. If I have to see the funky lipped drunk do her stereotypical alcoholic bit one more time I'm gonna start drinking...
Dave Doty's picture

Kish & Carly

I don't think we were even supposed to know they were gay at this point, according to Brett Claywell.  Wasn't the news actually broken by someone reading between the lines of a casting script, rather than a decision to start the marketing engine?  I don't think we were supposed to be paying that much attention to their storyline at this point.

And don't talk about my Carly that way!  On the plus side for you, her maternity leave should be starting any day now.

jjose712's picture

Forbes March

the guy said something different in every interview, in ones he said he'll be interested in Noah, in others said the opposite.

But he was to make trouble between Nuke from the begining (and the spoilers said that a month ago), but at least at the begining not in an adultery way.

I watch a preview and Mason seems a jerk full of himselg, wich can be interesting. And said a really funny thing to Noah, if you have to chose between love and art, choose art, but watching how lame was his film about Col Mayer, i would think twice before dump my two time heir boyfriend for my art

VK's picture

That Lush Carly

I find Carly's desent into alcoholism to be one of ATWT's best stories going on right now and that is all due to Maura West's performances.  I know they had to gear up for the actresses maternity leave but overall she's kept me entertained.  I also found the Stewart family lunch with new addition Hunter on Monday to be pretty funny.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Great article, once again.

Great article, once again. The sound on the Coronation Street clip was all weird for me; I couldn't understand it. I agree with Brett Claywell (becoming a fan of him, especially of his voice, as well as the adorable Scott Evans) about spoilers--at least that they really can change things for actors and audience, and I've tried to avoid them for One Life to Live specifically. You do well in alerting to spoilers, but I did catch a little one while paging through to look at other bits. I wish there was a way the spoilers could be relegated to one or more pages that I could just skip, though I understand that might be difficult, and some things are spoilery without being total spoilers. Also, I wouldn't know to be watching without spoilers, so I am at least grateful for the initial one, even if I am avoiding them now!
Dave Doty's picture

Spoilers

I'm coming to agree on spoilers.  Usually, they don't bother me, but since I started becoming a daytime fan, the spoilers there are at an insane degree.  In daytime, you can have literally every story beat spoiled before the story even begins airing.  It's kind of insane.

One of the things I like about this column is that it lets you pick and choose what level of spoiling you want.  I skip the spoilers section, but I read the sneak peak and the news beat, both of which include vaguer spoilers at the level I've come to expect.  I like having bits of the story that build up anticipation as I try to guess how it fits in the big picture.  I don't want to have the entire story summarized in great detail.

I agree, and what I caught

I agree, and what I caught today was just a small spoiler (about the letter), and didn't reveal what happens from it.  Daytime is crazy with spoilers; it's so strange to me, but I guess the people that really go after spoilers are so into the shows that they watch the show whether the surprise/suspense is there or not.  The cliffhangers aren't so much for them, but for us unspoiled.  Although, I don't always trust reviews by those that are excessively spoiled, because the element of surprise can really add a lot sometimes, and the fun of speculation is also muted.  I remember watching Hollyoaks and being unspoiled for a time and just having a lot of fun with it, but once I started to read some spoilers, I think it took a little away; same thing with Ollie and Christian--I watched all the clips available with great anticipation, but once I finished and looked for spoilers, it was almost guaranteed that subsequent clips would be good but just not quite as good as the previous ones, because there was no real anxiety about what was going to happen onscreen.   I think what I am really wanting is a "when to watch" bit that just says "ok, this week, expect some storyline movement on Wednesday."  I catch the daily what-to-watch segment, so I am not even sure what I am on about... I guess I just feel adrift, not knowing what day to expect more Kyle and Fish!  I guess I need to accept I am hooked on Kyliver or Kish or whatever it is to be called!

Please, writers at Forbidden Love, keep Ollian pure! We need a secure gay german supercouple to keep the cold nights out!

Actually, I find the Phillip thing pretty funny

I watched Y&R and when I saw Phillip talking to Nina in the clips from the latest episodes it really took me back. Long forgotten may be what a scheming shrew she was some 20+ years ago when she was bound and determined to bag handsome, rich Phillip and used her pregnancy to do it even though he was in love with another girl.

Now, I haven't watched in all these years, so I have no idea what happened since then. But I just think it's cosmically funny that Nina managed to get the dream husband she plotted so hard to entrap only to have it turn out that he was gay. That's just such a case of just desserts in my mind.

VK's picture

Nina's Reaction

She seems to be handling this whole situation rather well surprisingly.  And I must admit that I hadn't thought of her manipulation of Phillip back then (as I hadn't discovered the show yet) kinda back firing on her when you boil it all down.  Nina is by far my second favorite Y&R character in all the years I've been watching and she did change quite a bit from the scheming hellion she used to be.  She survived being married to psycho David Kimble so that sorta changed her I think.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Psionycx's picture

Well you have to admit...

Knowing that Phillip ran off because he was gay does kind of take some of the blame off her shoulders, even as it might trigger some contrition. She schemed very hard to entrap Phillip in a relationship that was doomed to failure from the start. But in an ironic way, even though her motives back then were purely selfish, it wasn't strictly because of her that Phillip ran off. Even if he'd gotten together with Cricket instead Nina knows the outcome wouldn't have been any better now that she knows Phillip is gay.
Oracle's picture

Who's Playing Whom?

I think today's heart-to-heart with Colleen answered the question about whether or not Rafe is buying into Adam's manipulations. He's a complete chump. So, apparently all it takes is a hot body and piercing eyes to make a gay lawyer's brain come dribbling out of his ears.

Although, the fact that we're talking about Michael Muhney's hot body and piercing eyes does make it ALMOST understandable, I suppose.

Ugh. That overview of Brothers & Sister's upcoming season alone was enough to put me off my lunch. I think I'm done with that show. It was good when it first started, right? Or, am I just remembering wrong?

Psionycx's picture

Kevin and Scotty as parents?

Why not? After all, it's not like they have any social or sex lives to speak of that parenthood would interfere with. Plus it would result in even more scenes of Nora venting her OCD and aren't those always fun? (dripping sarcasm).

VK's picture

Let's Not Forget Heather

After the lies he told her regarding that forged diary and having tried and convicted him she still went back for more LOL.  So Adam must have something to make both women and men go gaga over him.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Channing Capwell Jr.'s picture

Rafe's brain

I suppose the one good thing about this is, at least Y&R is being very equal opportunity in showing that ''all it takes is a hot body and piercing eyes to make a straight lawyer's brain come dribbling out of her ears'' as well, since Heather has been being used off and on by Adam ever since his legal troubles started last year.

Perhaps being chemical is just another trait that Victor Junior shares with Victor Senior, only Adam has one-upped dear old dad by showing that he can make men's brains turn to goo as well .. lol!

freeman's picture

Another great job Anthony!

But I do wish you'd stop hating on As the World Turns. The Luke coming out and Luke and Noah storyline has taken over three years to tell(hardly a fast pace). I would like to hear your ideas about how they could make the story better. I think a revelation that Noah had, unbeknowst to him, fathered a child with Maddie would create some tension between the boys. By the way, it's kind of unfair to compare Y & R's ratings to the other soaps. For one thing, for it's first half hour it is the only soap that does have competition from another soap opera. It's also on at lunch time when it's easier to watch. Finally, Thom Bierdz's acting is TERRIBLE and a little creepy. Long live Luke and Noah...the first, the best and the hottest!
Anthony D. Langford's picture

I'll Stop...

..... I will stop hating on ATWT when it gets better.  Now yesterday's show with Carly's intervention, was excellent.  Great soapy drama.  If they could apply that sort of solid story and writing to a Luke and Noah storyline, it would be great.  I'm hoping the arrival of Forbes March to the canvas brings some juice to this story and this couple.

Kings

Well I tuned in eventhough I thought I was done after the episode where Katrina Ghent was offed by the Queen. I must say this past weekend's episode was really, really good. David made an impression on me finally. I can now see why he would make a good King in Silas' place and why Silas both reveres and fears him. Michelle's pregnancy was a nice twist. Jack flip-flopping to stand up for David was nice too. I too am going to be a bit sad to see the show go.

Once upon a time I died.  And like my namesake I got better.

Anthony...another excellent

Anthony...another excellent edition. You've got me so excited now about what surprise you may have regarding Olli and Christian. The first Ollian Vlog last friday was superb. And VL even subtitled it for us none German speaking fans...what a gift.

I thought last weeks episodes with the kick off to a new storyline for Ollian was great. Jo and Thore always seem to put 100% into every scene they do. And like I always stress, their on screen chemistry and acting is just amazing. I'm so excited for their new story.

I like the idea of Kevin and Scotty as parents, except sometimes it takes away from the two main participants and becomes two...plus one. The child so often becomes so much of the focus. Which more often than not, isn't a good thing.

Anthony D. Langford's picture

Not Happy....

I found Kitty and Robert's baby drama really boring and it's not going to be anymore interesting because the gays are doing it this year.  I just think the writers have no idea what to do with Scotty and Kevin now that they are married.  Since they seem to be on a mission to domesticate the gays, they can't break them up or have one of them have an affair or something so they come up with lame, boring and time filler type stories for them.  To me, that's what this upcoming story is going to be.  And I'm sure once the child is born, there will be lots of scenes that go like this:

Walker Family Member:  Kevin, where's Scotty?  How come he's not showing up at this week's family gathering?

Kevin:  Oh, the baby was sick/sleeping/tired/playing/taking a bath/teething/watching a video so he had to stay home.

Channing Capwell Jr.'s picture

Rather than a Phillip-Rafe Pairing

I'm sorry, but I just can't picture a Phillip-Rafe pairing.  No problem with the age difference, it's more the personalities.  And while things could happen to make me change my mind, upon hearing this, my first impression is like, ''Oh gee, we have two gay characters on the show, let's put them together.''  I would certianly hope they'd do, or have done, some screentesting to see if there's any real chemistry there before launching into a romance with these two.

I think I'd prefer they eventually start telling some more recent backstory for the Phillip character.  Like, who is, or who has been, his most recent lover in Australia? Don't tell me he had to wait 20 years and travel all the way back to Genoa City to find Mr. Right, who's 20 years younger than him .. lol!  Or, instead of Rafe, introduce a slightly older (gay) Navy SEAL friend of Chance's who would become a linchpin between son and dad.

For Rafe?   Depending on how long this thing with Adam goes on (the longer the better, imho) I'd have him eventually become law partners with Michael Baldwin and then meet Lauren's son, Scott, at some family dinner or something.   After the last Scott was written out, the head writer at the time (Jack Smith) indicated that they'd actually considered having him be gay.  Scott could be joining Fenmores to help his mom, and it would add another core family to the gay mix.

Professional effort, Anthony, Thank you.

The sisters and brothers in the know (coz they spend massive amounts of time watching soaps) at daytime confidential (etc) are immensely irritated by the whole Adam and Rafe thing. They see it as a plot contrivance. I agreed but like them, i tuned in to see the make-out scenes. The Y & R producer-dinosaurs cut them out. And like the obsessive soap watchers, I tuned out and headed to OLTL. It may be slow, but its a lot more relevant and exciting.

People still watch B & S?!! That show is completely b & s, Oh well...

Joseph's picture

I've dropped Y&R as well

I hate to say it, because it was SO good in the spring. But the P3 reveal--despite strong performances from Jeanne Cooper, Jess Walton and (especially) Tricia Cast--isn't holding my interest, and the Adam/Rafe storyline has become offensive to me--Rafe turns out to be a chump AND we don't get to see them kiss! Add in the dreadfully boring art heist story and not even the marvelous Mary Jane can get me re-interested.

Besides, OLTL is more consistant and entertaining right now--the Fish/Kyle story is starting to kick in, and I enjoy the other storylines, too (especially Blair/Todd/Téa and anything involving Dorian).

Dave Doty's picture

Can't Win For Losing!

When I first started watching Y&R, I wasn't impressed at all, and kept wondering why everyone around me wouldn't shut up about how great and magical it was.  Now that I've lightened up and gotten into it, people are starting to become disenchanted with it.  That's my luck. :)
Dave Doty's picture

Carly's Absence

I hadn't thought about what would happen to Parker and Sage during Carly's absence. The logical thing would be for them to stay with Jack and Janet, but the Parker/Liberty would be sufficient justification for them to stay with Rosanna at Carly's house (or at least Parker.) Rosanna could be a fill-in mom, which would give her something to do other than push-pull with Paul and Craig.
Anthony D. Langford's picture

Carly's Kids

As for now Parker will stay with Rosanna at Carly's house.   Sage is away at camp.  She went right before Carly left for rehab, if you recall.  Next week though, there will be some drama regarding the kids and where they are going to live whle Carly's away.  As that is a spoiler, I won't say more!
