GOOL THEATER

EastEnders

Though I still think how we got here was kind of sudden, I’m enjoying Syed and Christian’s settling into coupledom. They really do mesh welltogether, and the chemistry is terrific. It’s also rather surprising, given theshow’s reluctance to depict any affection between them in the past, how much onscreen kissing and cuddling and intimate moments we’re getting now.

It’s realisticand it makes the relationship more real. I wonder what is behind the suddenincrease physical interplay between the characters. Perhaps it has to do with anew executive producer?

But one thing that hasn’t changed is the show’s jarringinconsistencies in character behavior, which is more about fitting showy plotpoints than any realistic character motivation. For example, in the pastmonths, we’ve seen Syed’s mother wish him dead after his suicide attempt, burnall his clothes in the middle of the street, not to mention her numerousphysical attacks on Christian.

Now that Syed has left the family, her worstnightmare, she’s looking all sad and weeping into his shirts after she hasironed them. I just wish we could get some character consistency, rather thanjust whatever is convenient for the writers at the time.

Another example, Christian’s visit to Syed’s mosque wascompletely ridiculous and made no sense logically. Did he really think peoplewouldn’t be upset by his presence? He can say he doesn’t want to cause trouble, but how could he expect that not to happen? And if he really wants to knowabout Syed’s faith, there are hundreds books available on thesubject. Or how about visiting another mosque where not everyone knows you’rethe gay man sleeping with one of their members? Just saying.
