News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (August 11, 2009)

Welcome to another edition of Gays of Our Lives. This week, we start with GOOL THEATER and a Pick of the Week that should be obvious to those who watched One Life To Live this past week. Plus, find out why Luke and Noah irritated me to no end on As The World Turns and why I think Secret Life of the American Teenager is one of the worst shows on television.

GOOL SCOOPS AND SPOILERS has all the dish on Oliver’s desperate act on One Life To Live, Roman’s heartbreak on All That Matters and a horrific accident that will change Luke Snyder’s life on As The World Turns.

The big news in GOOL NEWSBEAT is the shocking behind the scenes changes at As The World Turns, The Young and The Restless and One Life To Live. Do these three soaps even have a future? Just how much longer will they be on the air? Check out our special report this week for the latest developments.

As always, SNAPSHOTS and our SOAPSTUD OF THE WEEK. And don’t miss a special announcement at the end of the column.

GOOL THEATER

PICK OF THE WEEKOne Life To Live

I still love this genre and am hopelessly addicted, but after 30 years of watching, I’m rarely ever surprised nor often emotionally touched. And while I wasn’t surprised by the events of last week’s One Life To Live, I was moved by the powerful and dramatic scenes between Oliver and Kyle. I only wish soaps made me feel this way more often.

I really was quite impressed how everything came together in these scenes. The writing was exquisite, emotionally raw and powerful and the acting by everyone involved was simply amazing. There wasn’t a false moment, a line of dialogue that seemed out of place or an acting choice that didn’t ring true. I could go on and on about how hot the kiss was, but that was almost secondary to the very real and heartfelt emotions that were on display.

Brett Claywell stole an already terrific show….

For me, Brett Claywell as Kyle is what holds this storyline together. I think what I love most about Kyle is that, for someone who has been branded a liar and a thief and a blackmailer, he is the most emotionally honest of everyone.
