Holden is not Luke's "father" or adoptive father. He is Luke's father/dad. Luke considers him to be his father in every sense of the word, therefore he is. Damian is Luke's birth father/sperm donor. And no more.
Holden is his adoptive father. That is a fact. How Luke feels about Holden as compared to Damain is irrevlant in the context in which I used the term. And yes, clearly Luke sees Damain as more than just a sperm donor given that he wants Damian in his life.
I've talked with my friends who were adopted; they would never consider their adoptive parent(s) anything other than simply their parent(s), first and foremost. And while most have met their birth parents they will tell you that a birth parent never comes close to holding the same extra-special place in their heart as a parent who raised them.
...but who are you disagreeing with? You say that they would never consider their adoptive parents to be anything other than their parents, but isn't that exactly what Anthony said Luke did? Anthony's very words, in fact. AND while he was giving some of his very rare praise to the series, to boot, so obviously he thinks it's the right way to play Luke.
Are you agreeing with Goldie's belief that Damian is nothing more than a sperm donor?
Which is why I brought this up in the first place. To clarify Luke and Holden's relationship is to diminish it. Luke and Holden are father and son. That is the way they are presented onscreen. End of story.
Yes, of course, Luke feels some connection to Damian because of their shared DNA [Luke's term]. But Luke has never expressed the idea that he views Damian as another father or even a potential father figure. He's not even sure what kind of relationship they can have.
But Luke had said on many occasions that Holden is his father, his real father, and the only father he has ever needed or wants. I think we should honor that.
You're clearly either missing my point or simply choosing to ignore it altogether. There is no diminishing Holden and Luke's relationship by pointing out what it is. And actually Luke HAS viewed Damian another father and has said so, including in this clip, on more than one occasion. His view at the end of today's show is simply out of anger. We all know Luke will change his mind about Damian next week. He always does. But when it comes right down it it, no matter how Luke feels about Holden is again irrelevant. Holden is Luke's adoptive father. That is a fact and the context in which I used the term is again, amazingly and incredibly accurate.
I'm trying to respond to Anthony and Goldie but I don't know how to do both.
Luke's relationship to Damien is complicated and riddled with issues and it will probably always be so not just because he has another father but because of how Damien has treated him and his family since he was born.
I'm not saying Luke isn't trying to forgive Damien or that he never will, I'm just saying it's not about "facts" and "biology", it's about a relationship.
This is not an issue of "who is really Luke's father". It's more like "what do you do when you have two fathers who can't stand each other and who are both in love with your mother?"
Holden is really Luke's father by law. There is no maybe about that. He has been his father his whole life. I've never once seen Luke claim or think otherwise. He delivered him and raised him and the kind of man Luke is is a combination of Holden and Lily. He feels like a Snyder because he was raised by them. It's not fake or faux or less significant than biology.
Damien is ALSO Luke's father but he doesn't have a father son relationship with him. They are more like uncle and nephew at this point (of course Damien doesn't feel that way)
Everyone seems to think there is some magical thing that makes biology overcome socialization and nurture that would make Damien "feel" more like Luke's father or make Luke "feel" some natural connection to Damien but I don't see any evidence of that on the screen.
Luke may eventuallly grow to love and trust Damien but we aren't there yet. He's trying to get to know him and Damien is trying to get to know Luke but with everything that's happening, we don't know what Luke and Damien's relationship will become.
The presense of Damien doesn't change the nature of Luke's relationship to Holden anymore than Holden adopting Luke changed the biological connection between Damien and Luke.
Luke simply has two fathers. One he knows and loves who raised him, the other he only knows through traumatic incidents of his past and the strange events of the last number of months.
Damien has only been around for 4 or 5 months. It could take a lifetime to work out how Luke feels about having Damien in his life and it will change all the time .
As we can see, Luke is extremely mistrustful of Damien and it's actually unclear if he loves him. He's trying but you can't manufacture love and NO, you don't automatically love someone because they are your biological parent. Trust, that's bond.
I'm not sure where all the anger is coming from but it does seem that folks are blatantly disregarding the experiences of adoptees (both the character Luke and actual ones here on this thread).
First off, there is no anger here. I can't speak for others or their agenda.
Second, I'm not disregarding anything. I know the situation between Luke, Holden and Damian is complicated and fraught with emotional landmines. It always has been. But my point, yet again is that Holden is Luke's adoptive father and Damian is Luke's biological father. Those are facts.
I understand what you are saying and I agree with much of your post, but how Luke feels about them doesn't really matter in the context in which I used the term.
I'm sorry but I do think you are putting more emphasis on "adoptive" than the story calls for even if it is a "fact".
Luke has two fathers and from what I can see, that isn't an issue that is a conflict for him per se, it's more about what kind of man is Damien and how will he treat Luke and his family, etc.
Lily is adopted. Lucinda is her adoptive mother or whatever you'd call it. This is what I thought was the case.
I don't recall anyone every suggesting that Lucinda should be referred to as Lily's "adoptive" mother. She's her mother. End of.
Also, if we're being purely factual, isn't Holden both Lily's Husband and her Uncle or Cousin (someone must know that bit)?
I guess what I'm try to say is that the emphasis being placed on the word "adopted or adoptive" is what I find odd and new.
It's not like Holden's offical title is "Luke's Adoptive Father".
I get it, folks like the character Damien and don't want to take away from the connection between Damien and Luke and it is the reason why Damien returned (well one of the reasons) but it's not like anyone doesn't know that Damien is Luke's biological father.
I just don't get why all of a sudden Holden is being described as "adoptive" father as if that is a significant issue.
This isn't the first time I've heard it mentioned on AfterElton in this way but the emphasis seems new to me.
This isn't a custody storyline or a paternity issue, so I don't see why it's necessary to push the point or make it seem like a struggle between "adopted" and "biological" when that's not really the issues being dealt with on the screen (even if that accurately describes the players)
Also Anthony, I never said YOU were angry. It wasn't a personal dig. People get hot in these discussions, it's not unusual.
ONE LIFE TO LIVE continues to be smoking hot and the kudos that the players in Oliver Fish's coming out story are getting are well deserved. I give special props to David Fumero's Cristian because I've never seen him work with this kind of material, and he's doing really well with it. I do hope Nicholas Rodriguez sticks around and that he and Scott Evans have a sing-off for Kyle's affections. Hell, if Amira can sing a love song to Syed on EASTENDERS, why not the gay boys in Llanview?
No matter, I cannot wait to see what Brett Claywell teased to SID ABC about the episode OLTL taped on September 16th. And while I want to see Oliver fight for Kyle, I want Kyle to find some happiness without all the crazy with Nick too.
Anthony Cotton was getting on my last nerves but he really did a nice job in that CORONATION STREET clip.
Not loving the new MELROSE PLACE. The show takes itself way too seriously and is missing the sense of fun that I loved about the original and made me a devout viewer when I was in college. And Sydney Andrews is no Amanda Woodward. 'Nuff said.
ALLES WAS ZAEHLT feels like a completely different show compared to the days of Deniz's drugging and whoring. And I'm loving it. While their brethren over at VERBOTENE LIEBE aren't quite as dynamic storywise, I still love Ollian/Chrolli and today's episode reminded me why: even absent the sturm und drang in a soap relationship, I enjoy the fact that Christian and Oliver portray that aspect of gay couples where it's OK to be happy. Is it riveting soap? Sometimes. Is it hot to see Jo Weil and Thore Schoelermann go at it during their love scenes and make the Ollian/Chrolli relationship as authentic as possible while remaining uber sexy? Absolutely, yes.
Thanks for singling out the great scenes among and between Van Hansis, Noelle Beck and Paolo Seganti on AS THE WORLD TURNS when the fallout of the barely widowed Lily jumping into bed with Damian was revealed. I have to give credit to Hansis for always doing his best in spite of the material. The Luke/Noah/Mason triangle, however, leaves something to be desired. I'll stick with ONE LIFE TO LIVE's KNISH on the gay love triangle story for U.S. soaps.
I'll be following the German GOOD TIMES, BAD TIMES now, I think. Those were pretty good scenes in GOOL theatre.
I'm looking forward to the return of FISICA O QUIMICA as well.
Wonder if Kristin Chenoweth will sing a WICKED song on GLEE...
Oh, and the guy's name from DAYS OF OUR LIVES is NICK Stabile, not MARK. He was in SUNSET BEACH and pinch hitted for Justin Hartley as Fox Crane when Hartley was on parental leave. Too bad Officer Dean was a one-note villain. I still don't completely understand why he hated Hope so much...
Finally, YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS has been a total disappointment on all the gay fronts. After all the hoopla about recasting Adam Wilson and those "controversial" scenes with Yani Gellman's Rafe Torres, and the botched return of Phillip Chancellor III... it's just a disaster all around.
Can't wait for the next installment of GOOL! Thanks, Anthony!
I think Nick is going to be around longer than anybod presumes. Which is good. He's an interesting character and I think he's a great contrast to Oliver. Besides he and Brett have chemistry and I want to see where it goes.
I think we know what Brett was teasing by now. At least those who have seen the new spoilers that came out tonight. I won't spoil them here and I hope no one else will either. We'll have all the details in next week's GOOL, of course. But I'm still stunned. I heard rumors about this twist, I admit, but the way the show is going about it is either insane or genious. Maybe both.
I think the new MP is interseting. It needs to amp up the heat thought and immerse itself in the trash that was the original series. And the show's bad girl is a bad actress. Really bad.
I'm hoping this week's FL are better. Fingers crossed.
As for ATWT, anybody who watched today's show, which I did sees that the 'triangle' is missing a primary ingrediant. Heat and sex.
I'm interested in the German GTBT. Great story. And the guys are cute. The Dutch version is... it's not doing it for me. It need for it to give Lucas a story. And fast. He's an interesting character, but I need for him to actually be doing something.
OMG, it is Nick. He played Mark on Sunset Beach. As for DOOL, Dean hated Hope because he was passed over for a promotion that went to her. He thinks she only got it because she has an 'in' with the elite of Salem. HOWEVER, the whole kidnapping, attempted murder, killing spree was a bit excessive. I didn't buy he'd do all that because he got passed over, not to mention fixating on her because of it. I will say though that Kristen Alfonso and Peter Reckell gave really good performances in the storyline.
I have read the spoilers (as you said Anthony - they are everywhere) and wow - I think we have crossed back into true soapy campness. Not sure I'm gonna be into where this is gonna go.
...if I had been sideswiped by that bullshit...after really enjoying the build up of these three good gay characters, I'd be pissed. At least I know now to savor the current story while they flush the potential down the crapper ATWT style.
" At least those who have seen the new spoilers that came out tonight. I won't spoil them here and I hope no one else will either. We'll have all the details in next week's GOOL, of course. But I'm still stunned. I heard rumors about this twist, I admit, but the way the show is going about it is either insane or genius. Maybe both. "
^ i think i know what you're talking about. so far, i am going with totally insaaaaane. oh man, oh man
Y'all are making it almost impossible for me to resist reading the spoilers. Just tell me this much: are we talking about something in the relatively near future, or will I have to dodge this huge spoiler for months?
Anthony: Thanks for another excellent GOOL. I look forward to it every week. However, let me know the next time you intend to start gushing over One Life to Live so I can have a bucket of cold water ready. The All that Matters clip was clearly the pick of the week. It had hot sex, conflict and humor. While the OLTL coming out scene was well acted, it was very depressing. Oliver's father calls him a degenerate and Roman's father tells him to write a love letter to his boyfriend...you choose. The Good Times/Bad Times clip was also excellent. I continue to be amazed at the worldwide interest in the Luke and Noah storyline, now going into its third year, and I suspect that all the detractors will be proven wrong when the Mason and Noah relationship heats up. Again...keep up the good work and be patient with ATWT.
I'm suprised that an ardent fan of ATWT, with its psycho dads and deprogramming camps, would complain that the OLTL clips were too depressing. I don't know that unsupportive dad vs. supportive dad is a good reason to make it clip of the week. Is the quality of a scene judged by the number of sympathetic characters, minus the number of unsympathetic characters?
I was going to ask Anthony what it was that put ATWT over AWZ, though. Not because I think it was a wrong choice, but simply because I'm curious about what swung the vote.
So, Anthony: any concrete reason, or was it just a gut judgment call?
I didn't think OLTL was depressing, but it was very emotional and moving to me. I don't compare ATWT and OLTL's coming out stories. To me they are very, very different. I know some fans like say 'gee, that's just like Noah's story' and there are similarities, but the differences are like night and day.
ATWT's story, now that was depressing because the show was saying 'being gay is cool' one one hand, while finding ways to prevent Luke and Noah from being affectionate on screen. Thankfully, that's not a message we get from OLTL.
As for OLTL vs AWZ, it could have gone either way. I loved them both. They are both amazing shows, IMO. But I think what did it for me was which show as I still thinking about the day after I watched it. And that would be OLTL. So I guess that's why I picked it.
I think there's one other important difference between the two: Caleb is recurring, while Matt was a regular. We usually don't get to see much of the love lives of recurring characters, unless they're involved with one of the regulars.
I think there's a matching set of preconceptions in these types of situations: one on the part of gay viewers, that any gay character ought to have a big, central role on any given show, and one on the part of the studios, that they can do less than that while still drawing in gay viewers.I don't care if gay characters are minor or peripheral, as long as they're well handled in what screen time they get. But I'm also not going to keep watching just for a character like that.
Bringing it back to MP, I like the show, and Caleb, but if I were on the fence about it, Caleb wouldn't be enough to push me over. And I'm okay with that. But if his role doesn't become more central, I also don't think the gay media and blogosphere are under any obligation to support the series.
Of course, as you say, one episode isn't nearly enough to say how they'll be handling him overall.
I love FoQ, and I'm so glad the new season is starting soon. I have really missed the show, and I can't wait to see what's in store for Fer and David.
I did see the first clip from the first episode (the episode is apparently already online), and I found it kind of odd. It looked like David was the one flirting with the new guy, and making Fer jealous. Not the other way around..
Anyways, much has happened on NRPP with our boys Santiago and Diego. Santi confessed to his cousin Alejandra that he is in fact gay and that he likes Diego. Then he walked out, threw away the helmet, drove away on the motorcycle like a maniac. He showed up at Diego's house, giving a long speech like "I will be discriminated against.. I have to live with both this and the issues with my family, blah blah.." And then he throws (well, kinda) Diego against the wall, and Santi KISS him! Leaving Diego baffled while Santi walks out. There was also a scene with Diego at school with the idiots Matias, Miguel and Juan. Then we cut to the last scene where Veronica (Santi's mom) gets a call from the hospital saying Santi has been in a motorcycle accident and is badly hurt. AUCH! More to follow today..
Ok Diego is quite possibly the cutest little thing I have ever seen! The writing is a little stiff (as is the acting) but I am loving it. However that kiss between Santi and Diego was the worse fake kiss ever. But it is something amazing for a Telenovela! Here is hoping for bigger and better.
People talk about As the World Turns moving too fast. In the last month on OLTL the character of Oliver fish has... kissed his former lover, tried to sabotage his former lover's new relationship, slept with two women, fathered a child (in only 48 hours from intercouse to conception), come out to his girlfriend, come out to his parents, ended a hostage crisis, arrested the mayor AND... saved the city of Llanview. Now that's fast!
Next week he plans to end the recession and lead us to victory in Afganistan.
On one hand the pace is good, they have a good rythm, something in between the speed of light of ATWT and the glaciar pace of Y&R. But the time on Llanview is like in Narnia, two weeks of the episodes are like 48h on Llanview. But it's soapland, and every soap have their own time rules
Anthony... usually I like your take on the soaps but sometimes I wonder are we watching the same soap. Example a couple of times you have mention forbidden love saying nothing was happening but there was. Could it have been the time line you do your GOOL. I also think your kind of hard on ATWT. I know the writing could be better but give us a break especially Noah. What do you have against him. I think Jake plays him the way he's written. Please give him a little more credit then you do. I do love reading your column don't get me wrong but you ask for feed back.
In terms of FL, I'm judging last week's shows. I know things picked up for Christian and Olli this week and we'll address that in next week's column. For me, most of the time there is nothing going on. The guys will get a storyline, but it'll last an episode or two, if that. It's not like they have an ongoing storyline. They haven't in over a year, which is my major gripe.
I'm hard on ATWT because it continues to turn out junk and has been especially poor storytelling in regards to Luke and Noah. After two years of mostly awful stories, they only get worse, despite the promises that things will get better and using the couple for publicity. For example, Luke and Noah were the show's reps at the Emmys. Given that you'd think they were the stars of the show. But compare them to all the other couples or actors used.
On their shows, those actors are front burner with primary storylines that the writers seem to actually spend time crafting. If L/N were on another show with their popularity, they would be front burner with no question. Not so much for ATWT, who seem to slap L/N stories together without any thought and hope playing it once a week will be enough to appease the huge fanbase. It's not just a joke, it's a slap in the face to the fans and the actors, who deserve better.
Compare that to OLTL, who are using their gay characters, who are growing in popularity, for a huge November sweeps storyline.
As for Noah, I think he's a poorly drawn character with little depth and personality, shading or nuance. As for Jake, it's nothing personal. Believe me, I have nothing against the actor, who is a very nice guy. I'm sure he is doing his best. I just don't happen to think his best is very good.
And I want feedback. I'm glad you wrote. Lots of it. People don't have to agree with me. I freely express my views. I invite everyone to do the same.
Anthony, wow you really struck a nerve this week's with GOOL! With all the comments, I think the best part is it shows your readers are PASSIONATE about these soaps and characters. Reading this week's GOOL made me want to come to the defense of Forbidden Love. You are correct that since the boxing story was wrapped up (almost a year ago?), Ollie and Christian have not had a big ongoing storyline. I would think a lot of that has to do with writer Tom Chroust moving to AWZ? However they have been around a lot, and much has happened with them (Olli owns No Limits, Christian's health issues), even though a majority of their screen time is reacting to other characters drama. I can't though keep my mouth shut when FL was given the "Pan of the Week." The best part of FL is actors Jo Weil and Thore Schölermann. They have been committed to their characters and relationship since day 1, and have done nothing but "bring it" every scene this past year when not on the front burner. They endlessly thank their now worldwide fans, partake in many GLBT events, and fully support our community. Not to mention Olli and Christian are probably the most PDA couple on television anywhere--and the actors admit THEY are the reason for the character's PDA. If there was an episode of them doing nothing but sleeping for a full hour, it would be more exciting than anything on ATWT since Nuke finally had sex. IMHO, FL should never be considered for the Pan of the Week: 1. As long as ATWT is on the air, and 2. Out of respect for Thore and Jo. Is there any way you can work your GOOL magic and get an interview with the current writing staff of FL, and express GOOL's concerns (or get Tom Chroust to come back lol)? That said, I thought yesterday's clip of FL was the best in awhile. Watching Christian lose his way, confidence, etc. had been interesting and Thore's performance again has been great. And any time they are rolling around in bed together.....yummy. Let's hope this, along with Olivia's demise coming, gets our couple back on the front burner. Whatever happens, as long as Jo and Thore are there, so am I.
Nate...thank you so much for writing this. To see that 'Forbidden Love' got 'pan of the week' was very disappointing. Even though I am a huge Olli and Christian fan, I still would be the first to agree if they actually deserved the pan, but I have to respectfully disagree with Anthony on this one. I see the 'pan of the week' given because Ollian are not the center of attraction and Anthony is 'bored' as he says. But Olli and Christian are one of the more highly featured characters, I admit in supporting roles and for far too long, which is disappinting. Nevertheless, they are such good actors. that even a few minutes on screen they just have you glued. And when you look at episodes like Mondays, they just leave everyone in the dust when it comes to emotions, passion and believeabilty. And i'm sorry, but whether it's OLTL or ATWT, you are not going to get a bedroom scene between two men on any US SOAP as we saw with Ollian. And it's not a matter of having two gorgeous men in bed together rolling around, because that's not what it was about, It was the emotional drama that played out. You felt like someone spying in on a private moment. The body language, body contact and eye movement is so convincing. There is no hitting you over the head with a sledgehammer type of acting, which I love. Jo Weil and Thore Scholermann give us scenes that you can't take your eyes off. And their weekly Vlog is so good that it has blurred the lines for some between fiction and reality.
Has I have stated on previous occasions, they may not be all drama, drugs, solving of murders, pending three way triangles and so on, but you can still appreciate what they bring to the screen. In fact, they stand out since they are the ONLY couple one of all these SOAPS abroad and in the US who have not cheated, slept around or drugged out. It is one of the purest love stories i've seen on TV. And for the record...Jo has informed the fans that they started filming a serious storyline for Ollian which he and Thore are very excited about, but it's going to take a couple of months before we see anything. So it's coming, just have to wait that little while longer.
And just found out that Jo and Thore are starring in a movie out next year. It's a detective story. I have to get more info, but it's listed on IMDB. The title of the movie is 'Transfer to Aschen.' The director is Paul Warner who did 'In The Name Of The Father' and 'Fall Time' to name a few. Like I said...these guys are really good actors especially for SOAP standards.
Now on one hand I can understand Anthony giving the 'pan of the week' because he is looking at the overall picture, not the actors performance as we are. Which if we judge SOAPS based on the overall picture...then ATWT and even the beloved OLTL should get panned at some point since quite often they one giant cheese fest.
I'm also glad you brought up how much Jo and Thore not only are huge supporters of the gay community, but are constantly participating in charities and activites which bring to light to homophobia. Also, the grace with which they appreciate their fans never runs thin. You see, they do not take the fans for granted, but realise they are where they are because of the devotion they have gotten. Such nice guys.
Anthony...I still love your blog and look forward to it every week. We sometimes may not agree on viewpoints, but your blog is the best.
I know about the German GTBT from gay daytime.blogspot but thought you were just ignoring it, it has become my favourite to watch - mostly coz it reminds me the beginning of John Paul n Craig same heart n un-contrived honesty with completely different characters. The Dutch GTBT is hilarious every other line from Lucas tickles me silly, I’m feeling the no storyline coz they get obvious quick n quite predictable- you know how its gonna end so there’s not much need to watch - they seem to have effectively n realistically jump passed possible cliché storylines n given him balls, ego and potential. In all very welcome in this avalanche of woeful homos.
ATWT I refuse to read spoilers so I’m not sure but I still don’t understand why every ones pushing for the love triangle or why it has to fit an archetype. I still say/hope its unrequited coz that would be much more interesting n if done right very clever n engaging.
Eastenders is quiet good if; you lower all expectations, not a lot of viewers seem to be homophobic, and as far as what I’ve read from the producers they don’t seem to understand the story or articulate or portray what they should - the Muslim angle was left at the first week n note there is enough in it for it to get good quick.
OLTL - remains to be textbook. Even with the police/hostage plot, boyf/college history, love triangle and baby just feels forced n obvious IMO. Each has been done before but now they’re being done at the same time around one character problem for me is there is only so many ways this can end. I still feel like I’m being walked n talked thru every emotion or maybe its coz I’m gay most of it feels like it should be obvious to every one else when that may not be the case or just over analysing coz no else seems to be but a lot just arks me about it n I don’t think I’ve every been able to sit and enjoy these clips. The dad made me wanna hurt him (which I guess was the point or just true to life. Either way) mum knows twist was fun n illuminating much better than a note on a door step. Don’t mind the storyline but I can’t be the only one who’s noticing this?
ps Anthony please show a clip of mondays doctors i wnat to here your thoughts and discuss it. thanks.
His storyline right now is the struggles both he and his mother have with their reunion. It's an original story and I'm really enjoying it and I look forward to the coming weeks. Maybe you would prefer they'd jump right into a romance just like all the other shows, but I love the way GTST is doing this. It's not a super fast-paced show. Things are going to take some time to develop. That's only a good thing IMO. Also, characters on this show are not trapped in a storyline bubble. There's a lot of character and storyline integration, so Lucas will have more things going on in his life and won't always be the center of attention (like how he talked to Barbara and Lorena this week).
I totally agree. Obviously for many of us the focus is on gay characters and storylines.
That's always been my focus with soaps because I'm not a long time soap watcher and other than some of the British soaps (Doctors, EastEnders, Hollyoaks) I only watch the gay related clips on Youtube.
However, I'm interested in the characters, not just romance or a particular kind of storyline.
I adore Lucas therefore I'm interested in whatever happens to him and I'm very intrigued about what's going to happen with him and his mother because there is a slow burn there coming from him that you can feel. They clearly love each other but they have some "stuff" to get through and I like how it's slowly dawning on his mother that this is the case.
I also like how he's supportive of Nina his sister and fully integrated into her life. They are totally believable as close siblings who count on each other.
Anyway, that's where I'm at with that. In every scene Ferry brings what is needed and has made Lucas this very complex, interesting character that goes beyond just being cute and sexy and witty with a side of snark.
...you´ve discovered the German "Good Times, Bad Times"! In Germany, the faghags like me are alredy freaking out because of the two "Schnuckies"! I can´t wait to see them come together...
They are preserving the sanctity of marriage, so that two gay men who’ve been together for twenty-five years can’t get married, but a guy
can still get drunk in Vegas and marry a hooker at the Elvis chapel! The sanctity of marriage is saved!
I'm recently joined member, but i've read afterelton.com for long time, and your GOOLs Anthony always were my favorite, you do a very good/hard job,and it's always a big pleasure for me to read/watch your column, thank you!
i do agree with you about ATWT,the writing is sucks, the plots is stupid, they keep give to boys the most ridiculous nonsense plots over and over again, and even when they announced coming love triangle story(which was a not bad idea)but then they screwed it again,no chemestry,no screen time,no kisses,no passion,no any decent lines, and no surprise actually, but i think actors do deserve much better than all that crap.
in that view i think OLTL looks like a fresh wind from USA daytime TV,the writing, the plots, the acting are wonderful so far,i adore Brett, what a talanted and charming man he is!and now i know he likes soccer, god!now i love him even more since i'm a big fun of soccer game. And I really want Nick to stay for long long time in show,he is such a lovable and sweet guy,it's hard don't like him,now i even not sure who i want more for Kyle, him or Oliver, anyway have to say all 3 gay characters are amazing, and it's so cruel to tease us with all that talks about 'groundbreaking' December's scenes,i just can't wait! OLTL do a very decent job with their gay guys,it's away better than ATWT have ever done with their own.
and about new soap with gay characters, recently i've found Bulgarian TV soap,"Забранена любов" in English it means "Forbidden love",there is a story about Christian and Valery,as i know for now that is Valery a talanted architect who fallen in love with Christian, who has pregnant girlfriend and he is closed case. The acting is good enough, and plots are not bad actually, and they show some gay kissing/bed scenes so far, both actors are handsome.
here is you can find the story with English subs:
http://www.youtube.com/user/slashwoman
as i know in September were started a new season, and i saw preview, there is Christian kissing another man,Martin, who a very cute cousin of his ex girlfriend.
I have really enjoyed the OLTL story and it has pretty much felt organic and emotionally real but I admit the spoilers if they are as wacky as they come off could be high camp. Considering that I watched ATWT to support Luke through the Summer Camp Slasher, The Evil Gwen Lookalike, Maddie Dates a Mo, Col. Homophobe, Ameera, College Election Blues, Grampa Hot Pants, The Wonder Psuedo-Twins, and The Sexless Love Triangle- I can give them a little wiggle room.
As for YR, the whole thing never even got off the ground and the whole Adam/Rafe story was so tame - except one scene chewing good time when Heather found out- that I keep wondering "Why did the other guy quit? Over this? I bet he wishes he had this paycheck now that he sees they didn't have the guts to carry through. What the hell does anyone see in this Geriatric German that is bossing everyone around? Can’t JT just get naked so something interesting will be onscreen? “
Lately I’ve been thinking, “Why doesn’t Rafe move to Lanview? It has a large Hispanic population – maybe he’s Christian’s cousin. He can go to court and argue against That Bitch Tea Delgado. Plus since he is a lawyer it makes for easy interaction with the cop. I’m sure they can bump into the doctor, and the teacher.” Poor Rafe.
I’ll simply say “Thank You, Anthony for watching this boring ass mess so you can tell us when we should again.”
On to the pile of yuck that used to be Brothers and Sisters; I struggled through the last few episodes last year – Kevin working for a Republican – PUUUHHHHLLLEEEZZE- but with the impending baby story for this season, I see no need to force myself to watch. The busy lawyer/political adviser and the rising chef who is always at work decided to have a baby – OK- This is the best storyline you can come up with for these two great actors? Really? While I might think Luke makes one hot daddy, I’m not watching. I’ll miss ya Sally – I really did like you.
Forbidden Love
Today's Forbidden Love clip was good. The boys have a developing storyline. Also, we get to see them make out, which is always nice.

For the record
Holden is not Luke's "father" or adoptive father. He is Luke's father/dad. Luke considers him to be his father in every sense of the word, therefore he is. Damian is Luke's birth father/sperm donor. And no more.
Every sense of the word...
...but the biological sense of the word, surely?
And Luke's desire to get to know Damian surely suggests that he views him as more than simply a sperm donor.
I know, I know, don't call you Shirley.
Besides....
I agree... with Goldie
I've talked with my friends who were adopted; they would never consider their adoptive parent(s) anything other than simply their parent(s), first and foremost. And while most have met their birth parents they will tell you that a birth parent never comes close to holding the same extra-special place in their heart as a parent who raised them.
You may agree with Goldie...
...but who are you disagreeing with? You say that they would never consider their adoptive parents to be anything other than their parents, but isn't that exactly what Anthony said Luke did? Anthony's very words, in fact. AND while he was giving some of his very rare praise to the series, to boot, so obviously he thinks it's the right way to play Luke.
Are you agreeing with Goldie's belief that Damian is nothing more than a sperm donor?
fathers
Which is why I brought this up in the first place. To clarify Luke and Holden's relationship is to diminish it. Luke and Holden are father and son. That is the way they are presented onscreen. End of story.
Yes, of course, Luke feels some connection to Damian because of their shared DNA [Luke's term]. But Luke has never expressed the idea that he views Damian as another father or even a potential father figure. He's not even sure what kind of relationship they can have.
But Luke had said on many occasions that Holden is his father, his real father, and the only father he has ever needed or wants. I think we should honor that.
*shakes head*
You are both oversimplyfing the issue
Well....
Lily and Lucinda
Thank you
[Sorry, this was directed at Crawfish Po Boy's post.]
Very well said and I agree with all of it. It's complicated. I was merely oversimplyfying the semantics here because, for me, it is a simple issue.
Luke does not refer to Holden as his adoptive father. So, no one else should presume to.
And BTW, CB used this term in the section on Holden's kidnapping, where there was no point to be made.
OMG!
Great GOOL and Loving the OLTL Coverage!
Thoughts....
OLTL Future
You have got to be kidding me.
I have read the spoilers (as you said Anthony - they are everywhere) and wow - I think we have crossed back into true soapy campness. Not sure I'm gonna be into where this is gonna go.
OLTL
Just saw the new spoilers. What a load of crap. JMHO
I'm glad I read the spoiler...
...if I had been sideswiped by that bullshit...after really enjoying the build up of these three good gay characters, I'd be pissed. At least I know now to savor the current story while they flush the potential down the crapper ATWT style.

AAAH!
No....
Lenny and Carsten Ages
I think these characters are not teens.
I think they are in their early twenties (21, 22 maybe a bit older)
They have both already done their military service (that's where they met) so it's something you might want to check on.
One Life to Live versus All that Matters
OLTL Too Depressing?
Hmm......
Caleb vs. Matt
FoQ (sligthly spoiler-ish) and NRPP SanDiego KISS!
You can see the kiss and rest of the scenes from friday's episode here (it's subbed, but a few subs is missing): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG8OcKCe4J8
Harvey Milk: You gotta give 'em hope.
Oooo
Fast pace of One Life to Live
People talk about As the World Turns moving too fast. In the last month on OLTL the character of Oliver fish has... kissed his former lover, tried to sabotage his former lover's new relationship, slept with two women, fathered a child (in only 48 hours from intercouse to conception), come out to his girlfriend, come out to his parents, ended a hostage crisis, arrested the mayor AND... saved the city of Llanview. Now that's fast!
Next week he plans to end the recession and lead us to victory in Afganistan.
Yeah, But....
Please, your so biased it
Please, your so biased it actually makes me laugh out loud. Are you Christopher Goutman?
LOL!
I was talking to Freeman
I find it weird too
Relax
It's fairly apparent that we have at least one shill here in the AE community, but you're far from the top of the list of suspects, Anthony.
I keep waiting for "Brought to you by Clorox!" to pop up as a New Forum Topic. ;Þ
Forbidden Love
Some Thoughts
FL and ATWT
Forbidden Love, GOOL, and the great Anthony
Nate...thank you so much for
Nate...thank you so much for writing this.
I know about the German GTBT
Don’t mind the storyline but I can’t be the only one who’s noticing this?
ps Anthony please show a clip of mondays doctors i wnat to here your thoughts and discuss it. thanks.
Lucas has a story
Lucas and GTST
All-American Rejects on OLTL
Just a prediction...they will sing "I Wanna" (video)...and Kyle and Oliver will be giving each other "soapy" looks during the song.
I never thought that I was so blind
I can finally see the truth, it's me for you
Tonight you can't imagine that I'm by your side
'Cause it's never gonna be the truth too far for you
But can you hear me say? Don't throw me away
And there's no way out, I gotta hold you somehow
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Everyday but all I have is time
Our love's the perfect crime
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Every way and when they set me free
Just put your hands on me
Take everything that I know you'll break
And I give my life away so far for you
But can you hear me say? Don't throw me away
There's no way out, I gotta hold you somehow
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Everyday but all I have is time
Our love's the perfect crime
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Every way and when they set me free
Just put your hands on me
Tonight I'm weak, it's just another day without you
I can't sleep, I gave the world away for you to
Hear me say, don't throw me away
There's no way out, I gotta hold you somehow
All I wanna do is touch you
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Everyday but I all I have is time
Our love's the perfect crime
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Every way and when they set me free
Just put your hands on me
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Everyday but I all I have is time
Our love's the perfect crime
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna touch you
You wanna touch me too
Every way and when they set me free
Just put your hands on me

i do agree with you about ATWT,the writing is sucks, the plots is stupid, they keep give to boys the most ridiculous nonsense plots over and over again, and even when they announced coming love triangle story(which was a not bad idea)but then they screwed it again,no chemestry,no screen time,no kisses,no passion,no any decent lines, and no surprise actually, but i think actors do deserve much better than all that crap.
in that view i think OLTL looks like a fresh wind from USA daytime TV,the writing, the plots, the acting are wonderful so far,i adore Brett, what a talanted and charming man he is!and now i know he likes soccer, god!now i love him even more since i'm a big fun of soccer game.
The acting is good enough, and plots are not bad actually, and they show some gay kissing/bed scenes so far, both actors are handsome.
here is you can find the story with English subs:

as i know in September were started a new season, and i saw preview, there is Christian kissing another man,Martin, who a very cute cousin of his ex girlfriend.
Spoilers have me worried...
