Gays of our Lives (October 20, 2009)

Welcome to the 52^nd edition of Gays of Our Lives, which means we’ve been here a year. Happy Birthday to us! And as with our very first edition, this week we bring you all the latest news, spoilers and clips of your favorite gay characters in soaps and dramas.

In GOOL THEATER, Dr. Simon Bond deals with a gay teenage boy’s first crush on Doctors, Oliver shows his butch side on One Life to Live, Lucas goes back to work and stirs up trouble on the Dutch version of Good Times, Bad Times and Christian and Olli face tragedy on Forbidden Love. Meanwhile, Santiago and Diego continue their chaste relationship on Rich Kids, Poor Parents.

What teenage boy wouldn’t fall for this guy?

I liked how the show dealt with the boy’s first pangs of gay sexuality in a completely non-judgmental, matter of fact manner. The fact that it was a young boy developing a crush on another guy wasn’t an issue, but the way he handled it was the crux of the story. It’s so different than the ‘oh God, he’s gay’ situation that we’d usually get in these types of tales.

Of course, it was resolved rather quickly and unrealistically as the boy seemingly transferred his affections from Alesky to Simon (though I doubt we’ll ever see more of this story arc), but nevertheless it was nice to see the subject matter treated in such a casual fashion as if it happens everyday. Because, actually, it does.
