News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (November 03, 2008)

Greek – With no love life to speak of, Calvin was focused on finally making it into the fraternity, which he did, but getting there wasn’t very entertaining. More intriguing? Bitchy Frannie pulling a power play that sets up a new status quo with Casey and the sorority — and leaves delicious potential for lots of juicy plots. But let’s hope that next season brings us more of little used Calvin, preferably shirtless … and with a boyfriend.

As The World Turns – While some of the story mechanics of Luke’s foray into politics have been typically hoary (Ali getting kidnapped for example), Van Hansis (Luke) has predictably risen above the flawed material, especially in the fiery, emotional scenes between Luke and Kevin Davis, played by Karl Girolamo. The actors share such energy and with plenty of untapped emotions simmering beneath the surface, there is much left to be explored in this relationship. I just wish that Noah was being used more effectively. While everyone else is actually taking part in the drama, Noah stands on the sidelines pouting or being petulant — neither of which are attractive or appealing traits. On the plus side, Noah dressed as a farmer for Halloween was adorable!

Noah all ready to go to the Halloween Hootenanny!

Forbidden Love – Olli says goodbye to Christian and takes off for a trip to Ibiza (Christian is too busy with schoolwork to tag along). So what will Christian do while Olli is away? Not much it seems. Think Luke Snyder while Noah was in Rome. Speaking of which…

As The World Turns – Luke’s determination to win the election becomes an obsession when, thanks to a suggestion made by Casey, he decides to stuff the ballot box. Noah begs Luke not to go in that direction, but his pleas fall on deaf ears. Casey does the dirty work and Luke is ‘elected’ student council president. But what will his victory cost him? His education? Probably. His boyfriend? Definitely. Notice anyone who isn’t there for the victory celebration?

Degrassi: The Next Generation – Degrassi’s football team finally wins its first game and the star quarterback of the team, Riley Stavros (Argiris Karras) is walking on air. He’s also got a best bud named Peter and then there’s Mia, a girl he’s interested in. But suddenly Peter and Riley find themselves in a liplock. Peter is confused and wants to talk about it, but Riley, stunned by how attracted he is to Peter (can you blame him?), would rather forget it ever happened. Facing his sexuality is clearly something Riley isn’t ready for, so look for the character to go to desperate measures in his efforts to not deal with it over the course of the season.

Not only did Jake Silbermann (Noah, ATWT) recently appear with his onscreen partner Van Hansis (Luke) in a PSA encouraging people to vote in the upcoming U.S. elections, Silbermann has also been participating in the political process in his real life as well. Silbermann, along with Michelle Clunie of QAF and Wilson Cruz from Noah’s Arc were at OutFest in Philadelphia, representing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama in an effort to court the GLBT vote. Just one more reason to love the sexy and talented actor (besides the obvious of course), don’t you think?
