Gays of our Lives (November 03, 2008)

Adam Grimes and Chad Allen on General Hospital: Night Shift

The brass at flagship soap opera General Hospital have announced that there are no plans to bring any of the General Hospital: Night Shift characters to the mothership. So we won’t see Kyle and Eric, who quickly grew to be a popular pair on the show, continuing their romance during the daytime. As for the return of GH/NS, that is said to be in the works, but no confirmation on when. Rumor has it when it does go forward, Kyle and Eric will be part of the drama and we’ll get to continue to watch their relationship unfold. You many now proceed to whoop!

Get out your shoulder pads (assuming you ever put them away)! The third season of Dynasty has been finally released on DVD. Split into two parts (the first half was released last month and the second half last week), this season chronicles the lives of the Carringtons and the Colbys as they must come to grips with gay (or bi or straight — depending on the season) Steven’s death.

Al Corley and Jack Coleman as Steven Carrington

Okay, they only thought he was dead. He came back taller, blonder and much less talented. Other highlights include the discovery of lost son Adam Carrington, played by dark and sexy Gordon Thomson, the return of Heather Locklear’s Sammy Jo Carrington (auditioning for her years as Amanda on Melrose Place) and in a show stopping moment, Joan Collins’ Alexis giving Cecil Colby the ride of his life (he had a heart attack during sex, causing her to slap him silly). This is not Dynasty’s best season (that was season 4), but there are many pleasures to be had.

SOAP STUD OF THE WEEK

Billy Magnussen (Casey Hughes, ATWT)

Why him? Isn’t this photo reason enough?

Seriously though, Casey’s charms go far beyond the physical. He adds something desperately missing in dark, humorless Oakdale: fun! After all, when was the last time you saw psycho Paul or sad sack Noah laugh?

Whether pretending to be gay to help pals Luke and Noah pull off a sham marriage, having a steamy affair with his brother’s mother, or being the worst campaign manager known to man, Casey brings a sense of exuberance and joy to every scene. Even though his best intentions always turn out horribly, he’s really a big, goofy kid who only wants to do the right thing. Plus, he always bounces right back and is ready for the next challenge life has to offer.>/p>

For those reasons and, well, the fact that he’s smoking hot, Casey is our SOAP STUD OF THE WEEK.

Awesome News

Hey Anthony!

I am so glad to see that AfterElton has given you this forum. Not too long ago, I commented that this is PRECISELY what this site needs... when left to folks who don't share our mutual love of this genre, the results are... mixed to say the least!

Good luck with the column, and congrats!

TIL THE WEDDING - Oh, what's a gay grrl gotta do to get you

to cover this fabulous lil soap love story on your new blog?

What kind of muffins/cupcakes/tartlets do I need to bake, freezedry and send to you overnight to get you to talk about my two new favorite boys, Harel and Amir?

Red velvet? raw fruit? chocolate espresso? iced with sprinkles?

JUST NAME YOUR BAKED GOOD BRIBE OF CHOICE ANTHONY!

No shame in my game.

I'm writing this post with one hand and lightly dusting my muffin pan with the other!

I Can Be Bought!

Usually pretty cheaply, but it's not necessary this time.  Look for a feature article on this in the near future!

I KNEW THERE WAS A REASON I LOVED READING YOUR

POSTS.  I'm so glad you're gonna give Til the Weding some love. The episodes are short and sweet but I think they pack a wallop!

Okay, not only do you always have interesting and informative things to say (even when I think you are WRONG!!! ;-) ) but you are a cutie patootie just like I thought you might be. Love the spects sugar.

GAY GUYS AND GALS WITH GLASSES GET ALL THE PASSES!!!

Gay Soap Heaven!

Like Zanefan, I've long thought a regular soap column would be a great addition to AfterElton's site, especially considering how many gay men love soaps, and that we're now part of so many shows around the world. And who better to write about it than our resident soap expert, Anthony!

Good choice with the premiere soap stud: Billy Magnusson's portrayal of Casey is currently one of the few highlights of As the World Turns (too bad they didn't keep Casey with Emily, I thought he and KMH had terrific chemistry together).

Can't wait to read more!

some more win...

You must not forget cor de la cuitat :D or whatever it's called (i can never remember the name). also does anyone know where I can watch that Física O Química? Is there a channel on youtube or somewhere else that I can watch it?

"But for 3 years I had roses, and apologise to no-one."

netogeno's picture

Easiest way

The easiest way is probably trough Gays of Daytime. They are posting the second season with subs and I remember theyve been doing the same with the first one.

Congratulations Anthony!

Great news! Badly needed feature. Youll have a loyal reader.

Im very saddened to hear Kyle wont teleport to the mothership. The fact that NS exists in a completely alternate reality might explain it, absolutely nothing happened in GH regarding the bombing. Well, at least in looking forward to see the lovebirds in the next season of NS.

Física o Química has been homoerotic from the very beginning, the relationship was set up that way. I think it would be a shame if Julio turns out to be gay, it would make the most charming thing about the relationship disappear. I figure that maintaining the hobromance has a lot more possibilities than not. Watching two guys dealing with every day and relationship troubles, where the gay guys has the same share as the straight one is kind of refreshing. Well see how that goes.

Hopefull about Ravi.

Wish you well with the new column.

Another bisexual on Hollyoaks

First off, so glad this column is here now. I can't always keep up on my soaps and this will give me a good refresher.

Secondly, I'm a huge Hollyoaks fan. Like, HUGE! And as excited as I am about this new Ravi bisexual storyline developing, let us not forget that there is already another male bisexual residing in Hollyoaks village - KRIS! Kris is probably one of my favorite characters because he lives his life for himself, he's a loyal friend, he's blunt and tells it like it is. He's also know for being a crossdresser, which I think is refreshing to see. Now, Kris has had more relationships with girls than with guys, but we gotta give Hollyoaks the credit they deserve for having this character!

Once again, congrats on the new column. I know I'll be an avid reader in the weeks and months to come!

Right on, Anthony!

Good for you, sweetie. I know I can always count on you for anything soapy I may have missed and anything worth watching in the future. And, you are a cutie patootie. Darco is not the only one with muffin pans...

So looking forward to this

I'm so looking forward to this :) I'm sure you'll do an amazing job. May I make a suggestion for the format? I would love some crazy awards like "Best gay moment of the week" or "Best 'Mo with a 'Tude" or "Best appearance by a hot straight brother" or "Best soap you aren't watching" or "Most outrageous moment" or "Best Lesbian Avenger" (in case VL's lesbian countess Carla ever shows up again in the Ollian story) or "Best awwww-worthy family moment" or "Best 'Who know that you could be gay and boring?' moment" or "Best gay soap history moment" (to cover great scenes from storyline that were on before this column came into being; for example, the Nightshift finale!). Ok, I'm bad at this, but something like made up awards that go fit with whatever happened in any particular week. Or maybe a "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" or "The Good, The Bad and The Meh" structure. Or something like the Two Gay Guys "Clap it/Zapp it". I do love that you did the soaps, then a personal opinion piece and then a section on the latest news :) That said, I already feel sorry for you. So much material to cover. :D

ATWT: I have to say, I'm really happy that they have something resembling like a real storyline again. This is how things should be. That said, I still don't undertand why ATWT supposedly still maintains that Nuke haven't slept together. What is the reason for that? At this point they could have just dropped a line to make it clear that they had sex/are having sex even without showing anything and just proceed the storyline exactly like it is and the story would be just as enjoyable. In fact that is how I pretend the story is anyway.

All That Matters: I'm curious to see how the latest plot twist around Deniz will work out, but I think it is a few more weeks till it happens. Though I'm sad that when new writer Tom Chroust was interviewed about the show by soapdigest, it didn't necessarily sound like he knew yet if there would be a larger storyline for Roman.

Forbidden Love: To me this is going to be interesting to follow. Because what I ask myself is the question "Can only a 'mo write for a 'mo? (or at the very least a faghag)". Ollian's openly gay headwriter moved on to other projects recently, but the pair is popular, has good chemistry and after Jo Weil/Olli returns both actors are available. So everything says to me that the storyline should be continued. It's gonna be interesting to see if the new team is capable of taking the ball and running with it. Sadly, so far I haven't really been impressed with the new team (in this storyline or in the other storylines). I understand that they are on the backburner/in supporting roles, but it's starting to feel like even the quality of these supporting scenes has gone down a bit. Hollyoakes is in a similar situation (or the writer largely responsible for the gay storyline moving on), so I'll definitely be watching to see how it affects the storylines if at all.

Hollyoakes: I wasn't really impressed with the storyline around Ravi. There just didn't seem to be a lot of chemistry. I would rather see more of Kris and Spike.

Oh and may I suggest this tidbit for soap news? Tom Chroust (aka the headwriter for Ollian who will be writing for All That Matters next) talks about network pressures in Germany with SoapDigest: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_K-ESPDZ8PoU/SQsdyry2LAI/AAAAAAAABtk/s14d2enI17Y/s1600-h/-1.jpg

Física o Química isn't a soap

It's a night time show, and a quite succesful one, it survives competing with dancing with the stars and CSI, and provide the channel good ratings on mondays (a day they usually suck). In fact they are writing the third season. And Fer is an important character, because he mix drama and comedy, he has his own storylines and he is important in his friends storylines. His story with Hugo isn't finish yet. But Julio is straight. The only important gay characters (or interesting) in spanish television soaps that i know, are Max (who is out of the show right now) and Iago in the catalonian soap El cor de la ciutat (the heart of the city)
netogeno's picture

Well...

Because of its format, FoQ is what in the US would be called a night time soap, just like 90210 or Melrose Place.
jjose712's picture

I don't know

Física o química is like a mix of Dawson's Creek with Skins. It's a teen drama (with a touch of comedy) but with sex and drugs (it causes some kind of controversy here). I think the best thing of the serie is that each character has their own storylines and implication in the storylines of the others, everyone has screen time in every episode.

A night time soap opera is more like our Hospital Central

Joseph's picture

Two Things

Dawson's Creek was definitely a night time soap opera; haven't watched Skins, so I can't say. If Fisica o quimica has a set of characters in a specific locale whose storylines continue from episode to episode, sometimes with a melodramatic event or cliffhanger, than it qualifies as a soap opera. (It's worth noting that so many of our modern dramatic programs--Lost, Prison Break, Grey's Anatomy, etc.--bristle at the idea of being called soap operas, but that's what they are--they all utilize the serialized format to hook viewers, a la Dallas and Dynasty, but graft that onto traditional genres--the crime drama, the medical drama, Gilligan's Island....)

Is Armando del Rio still on Hospital Central? He is soooooo beautiful!

Check out my blog: http://radicalsexy.blogspot.com/

jjose712's picture

In this case

Fisica or quimica is a night soap opera. I always match soap operas with the anglosaxon version of the sudamerican culebron (big snake is the translation) o seriales. Something like Santa Barbara or As the world turns. And a night soap opera something like Dinasty or falcon Crest, or Melrose Place. Física o química hasn't anything in common with that, but it match the descripticon you made, it's a set of characters in a specific locale with storylines continue from episode to episode

And no, Armando del Río isn't in Hospital central anymore (in fact he left the series some seasons ago), he is one of the main characters in Sin tetas no hay paraiso, who is some kind of spanish version of a Colombian series. I totally hate this series, because the original match with colombian reality, but i don't thing the spanish version has anything to do with spanish reality. Anyway this series is very popular specially the main character, play by the handsome actor Miguel Angel Silvestre

KEEP FISICA O QUIMICA, ADD EL COR WHEN MAX COMES

BACK! I know Fisica O Quimica is EXACTLY a soap but it is SOOOO SOAPY and so fabulous and I think it fits the category.

I mean GH Nightshift was only once per week and it was at night and was paced very differently than daily soaps but it still fit the "soap" genre.

There's not a lot going on for Iago right now that's specifically about him and Max is gone and we have no idea if he's ACTUALLY coming back.

I love El Cor but if I had to choose right now, I'd say focus on Fisica O Quimica until Max/Bernat comes back to El Cor De La Ciutat

jjose712's picture

Iago

Iago (Marc Clotet) is playing now a cop in national series El comisario (it's curious because in el cor, he was a thief).

It seems people is missing Max, because he was a regular character for a long time. He don't left the series, but i think he is working in other things. It's more a break, but i don't know when he come back to el cor.

Catalonian soaps are famous for being gay inclusive for a long time. I can't say the same of galician series (where i live)

Roman and Deniz

How timely, as swisslady's subtitled playlist has just reached the peak of Roman and Deniz perfection, eps. 299 and 300. Sigh. If I could put time in a bottle... http://www.youtube.com/user/swisslady85

Clara Sheller

Another European series with a strong gay SL - this one French. All the Season One clips are up on YouTube. For some reason the entire cast is different this time around but these new guys more than fill the bill. You can find the Season Two promo posted by ZTube31 here -

CLARA SHELLER and Les Bleus

I loved CS series and really got into it but the last part (Part 10) was never uploaded so I have no idea how it all ended.

Also there doesn't seem to be anyone doing English subs for Clara Sheller or Les Bleus this season so as a non-French speaker, I'm very sad to be missing outon two such great shows.

I know it'sa ton of work for folks to do the translating and subtitling so I'm no totally surprized that the uploaded of clips stopped but sigh...

Joseph's picture

I want to see both programs as well

I adored both Clara Sheller and Les Bleus, and was really hoping that someone would translate and post the clips for the new episodes (perhaps they're waiting for the new seasons to end...?). If my français were better, and I had access to the shows, I'd do it myself....

Good news for Clara and Les Bleus fans!

Ztube31, who uploaded and translated the clips for the first seasons of Clara Sheller and Les Bleus, announced today on their youtube channel that they'll be doing the same for the new seasons. Here's the link:

Yeah, I Was Going To Comment....

That neither series has started airing their new seasons yet.  Les Blues begins in two weeks and Clara Sheller starts on the 19th of November, I believe.   And it's good to know we'll be able to continue seeing them when they do begin.  In doing research for next week's article I became quite a fan of both series so I'm really looking forward to their return.... and apparently so are a lot of other people!
LoTr1985's picture

Congrats!

Well! This quite the coup. Congrats sweetie!! You know what I love about ya? You write almost exactly the same way you talk in person. As I'm reading what you're writing, I can totally hear your voice. It's trippy!

You and I so obviously disagree about ATWT but I do like a lot of these other soaps so it'll be interesting.  I hope that you include links to YouTube or whatever so we can view everything (hopefully w/ translations).  It's time consuming to look all that shit up and since you're getting paid...you should do it!!

Anyway, this is great and I'm super happy for you.
