There are rumors that one man is going to start to fall for another. This was apparently mentioned in the yearbook or something. There's a lot of speculation that this will be Aaron Livesy, the local bad boy, and that he may fall in love with his friend, Adam Barton (played by the real life brother of Jason on Corrie, whose onscreen brother Todd Grimshaw was probably the most famous gay on UK soaps). The young man who plays Aaron is a wonderful actor so this could be a good story if it's told right.
The UK shows have fallen down in GLBT portrayals (and Torchwood being used as a positive baffles me), so I'm glad they're addressing it. The UK soaps have been especially disappointing. I am annoyed that the guy from Corrie said "not all gays are handsome." No, but even the gays who aren't handsome have almost no purpose on the show. Neither does Hayley. It is all very backwards.
But I'm glad to hear it. I think the report's right; gay representation on UK TV used to be pretty good but it's been awful recently. I tried to watch Christian and Syeds storyline on Eastenders but I find the characters so unsympathetic that I gave up on it.
I've seen a bit of Emmerdale and I think Aaron would be a really interesting choice. He's convincing as a moody teen so we'll see if he's convincing as a moody gay teen!
He's always had a lot of baggage and this would help further explain why. And I have wondered about Adam too. There was a scene weeks ago when he was in the Woolpack and I could have sworn he was looking at some of the guys with longing.
Emmerdale had GLBT representation for over 15 consecutive years, which must be some record. I was sad to see that end earlier this year, so I will be happy if it resumes.
I haven't heard it either, but apparently it was on the Inside Soap Yearbook that two of the show's young males would fall for each other. It would be nice to have gays on the show before since they've been pretty consistent about it, even if the storylines weren't the greatest. But there's no way that all the gays and gay storylines should have been written out all at once. There's something just.... odd about that.
I think there was a lot of backlash against the Grayson/Paul story, and Matthew Bose himself hated the story. He might have stayed, but the show didn't give him anything to do and they wrote out his partner, Jonny. The producer at the time, Anita Turner, seemed to have no interest whatsoever in Paul, or gay stories. This ending around the same time as Debbie/Jasmine must have been a coincidence (and I'm not sure they ever would have gone there again with "Jebbie" if not for Jenna Louise Coleman needing an exit storyline) but it did cast a pall. I'm hoping they are going to go back to a more consistent gay portrayal because Emmerdale was very good at this and it's something they never got credit for because it wasn't done in a way to get attention.
The interesting this is that if Aaron or Adam or another existing man on the show turns out to be gay...this will be the show's first ever coming out story for a gay man.
OLTL rocked, as usual. With my schedule, I'm not able to keep up with all the different shows anymore (especially VL and AWZ, which I used to watch pretty regularly), but it's nice to read about what's going on. (And, just on a shallow note, just based on the pics that have been posted here, that Lenny guy on Good Times, Bad Times seems whacked! The sexy Carsten can do so much better!) Most of all, I can't wait for next week for the interview with Ron Carlivati! Woo-hoo!
Did you hear the Emmerdale rumors?
I hadn't heard that

It could be very good

Emmerdale
It did seem very odd
