GETTING TO KNOW…. RIVER CITY

In this week’s “Getting to Know” section, we introduce you to River City, a BBC Scotland weekly drama that debuted in 2002. Set in Shieldinch, a suburb of Glasgow, River City is similar to Hollyoaks in that it has a large revolving cast and deals with topical issues.

Scott Wallace, an out gay man, is one of those characters and he hasn’t had the easiest time of it in business or in love. By trade, he’s a graphic designer, but that business failed and he now works as a bartender in the local pub. This being a soap opera, naturally most of his problems revolve around his romantic life. After drifting in and out of a few relationships, Scott finally fell in love with Eddie Hunter, a local cop.

When Scott learned Eddie was married with two sons, the relationship fell apart and he tried to kill himself. Like any plucky gay boy though, Scott survived and he and Eddie got back together and planned a life together. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. On the night Eddie was going to propose to Scott, he was murdered. To this day, the killer has yet to be caught.

It took a while for the devastated Scott to recover from Eddie’s murder ... until someone named Manu came into his life.
