News, Reviews & Commentary on Gay and Bisexual Men in Entertainment and the Media

Gays of our Lives (December 9, 2008)

When Dynasty returned for a reunion special three years after it had been cancelled, Al Corley was back in the role (in classic soap opera thinking, the show ignored the whole plastic surgery storyline). By now, Steven was living in Washington, D.C. and raising his son with another man. Corley was glad to return and to finally play Steven as an out gay man, happy and at peace with himself

IN MY HUMBLE OPINION

Gregor: Those poor Americans, I bet they can’t do this
in public in their country!

Forbidden Love - This episode started off rather sweetly with Christian (Thore Schölermann) eagerly looking forward to picking up a vacationing Olli at the airport. Of course, since actor Jo Weil (who plays Olli) is away doing a play for two months, not two weeks, the show had to concoct a way for Olli not to return … and as with Olli’s exit, it was badly done. For Olli to call at the last minute and say he wouldn’t be back for another week seems utterly out of character and it makes one wonder what lame excuses the show is going to keep using for the next month. The one good thing was that it gave hunky siblings Gregor (Andreas Jancke) and Christian a chance for some male bonding, which is always a treat. But that doesn’t make up for the show’s continued sloppy way of handling Olli’s exit.

Stephen Uppal (Ravi) and Stuart Manning (Russ) in a
boring scene from last week’s
Hollyoaks.

Hollyoaks – So what was that all about? Spike made a brief, but pointless return for a storyline about the show’s main pub being turned into a gay bar – only to have it turned back to its original state by the end of the week. The whole thing went absolutely nowhere. Maybe the thread will be picked up later, but I can’t see where it could possibly go. And what was with Hannah’s hostility towards Spike? He didn’t break up her relationship with John Paul; Craig did. This whole thing felt like filler to take up time since half the cast was away on the spinoff series. But anything would have been better than this.

Toby: You told me you’d only use this much.
Ben: Uhhh … and you believed that?

Casualty - The ramifications of Toby’s tryst with Ben continued to play out in fine fashion. Toby went from nervous anticipation at seeing Ben again to anger and fear when he learned his roommate Ruth knew about the sleepover. The entire interlude was realistically portrayed while a subplot about a gay elderly couple facing separation added a sweet and moving touch to the episode. I’ve grown quickly attached to Toby and I’m enjoying this show overall, especially hunky Dr. Adam.

"I’ve been in a bedroom scene twice in two weeks.
And all I had to do was break up with my boyfriend!"

As The World TurnsGreat acting was on display last week on As The World Turns as the Brian/Luke drama continued. Van Hansis as Luke led the way (as usual), shining in a number of scenes. The best were the ones with Luke and Holden (Jon Hensley) as they showed the warm and real bond between this father and son. Also noteworthy were the heartfelt moments between young Mr. Snyder and his grandmother Lucinda (Elizabeth Hubbard).
