"The Amazing Race" (15.8) Recap: "This is the Worst Thing I've Ever Done in my Life"Finally Sam finds the flag and they head to the Pitstop, where they come in fourth place. Dan breaks down and realizes what a total sh**head he was to his brother, and cries and apologizes profusely. Awww.
Meanwhile Matt and Gary have been trailing the entire leg of the race, and come in last. Fortunately Phil tells them that this is a non-elimination leg, so they are granted a reprieve. This was probably the most tense episode this season, and things are probably going to become even more tense in the coming weeks. The smarmy Globetrotters are now my least favorite team, but they managed to come in first place this week, and from the previews of next week's episode there may be trouble between them and Sam and Dan. What did you think? Did Dan's constant harassment of poor Sam completely turn you off, or did you find it as oddly compelling as I did? Below you can see an outtake from the Pitstop as Phil asks the guys about ... a certain bird. Submitted by on Mon, 2009-11-09 12:10. |

Sam is
XD They talk too much
Brothers!
I wasn't turned off (in fact maybe quite the opposite) by their bickering. They are acting just like brothers would act with one another! I found it very entertaining and even made me laugh. I know I've acted the same with my siblings. It makes them seem very real, plus Dan apologized in the end and that was very touching.
PLus they are very hot. :) I love them more and more every episode. I love watching all the extra clips about them on the Amazing Race site. They even said they miss the girls (maria and tiffany) in one.
You didn't mention that next week also promises more half-nakedness from the boys as they play in the mud in skimpy shorts!
The "Awwww" moment
The sweetest moment for me was after Sam found the flag.
Dan started his pre-pitstop mini-breakdown, apologizing to his brother, when Sam said "Race you to the pitstop!" to silence him and let him know it was all OK. Awww.
I think anyone with a younger or older brother can relate to this rivelry stuff and letting arguments go as quickly as they come up.
Awww...how cute are they!
Sam is simply adorable, even more in glasses.
I dont think Dan was trying to be a jerk, I think he was attempting to encourage Sam, he just did it in the wrong way, there is a fine line when frustration rears it ugly head. Its great that he recognized it and apologized.
Glad they are still in it, I wasnt really worried because, if you did the numbers, it was about time for a non elimination leg.
Next episode looks like its going to be very revealing. Go Team Gay!
I'm surprise no one's said it yet...
Le'ts Hope Team Gay Goes All the Way!
I like the globetrotters!
Admit that their constant references to New Orleans and the ghetto can be a bit redundant and annoying, but they are doing a great job in the race. Plus, they are having fun while doing it, and you can tell they really care about each other. So, how can you not like that??
My least favorite team at this point is Cheyne and Meghan, mainly because of Meghan. I honestly don't know how he does it, she would drive me nuts.
Dan isn't much better. I'm still rooting for them to win, but if I were Sam I would've made Dan do that hay challenge. Just knowing how impatient he is, and how freaked out he would get, let him do it himself.
I missed the shot of Sam in glasses! *swoon* too!

The Race
I was on the edge of my seat rooting for the boys to find that doggone flag. I remember that challenge from Season 6, and it is not easy, as was obvious last night.
I had figured out it was a non-elim, so that helped some, but still! the last place team is really, really behind the 8 ball unless there is some major bunching ahead (which there probably is, this is TAR after all).
I liked that Dan got so emotional when he realized what a jerk he was being, and that apology had me tearing up a bit. Too bad they aren't a couple; that would have been a great place for a make-up kiss.
Go Team Gay! We need another gay team to win it all. It's been far too long since Chip and Reichen.
Being brothers trumps orientation
I've had friends ask me if being gay, did I relate differently to my brothers, who are both straight. The answer is a resounding no. Straight/straight, gay/straight, or gay/gay, brothers can get into heated arguments over the dumbest things. With my brothers, it happens less often as we get older, but it still happens, currently about once a year. This year's shouting match was the proper way to move a coffee table. Two of us are over 40, so the whole thing is even dumber than it sounds. We always end up apologizing and laughing about it a few hours later.
Given all the above, I was laughing hysterically at Sam and Dan's fight. Particularly with the brother I'm only a few years older than, that so could have been us in that field doing the same thing.
Usually a douche on a reality series will not realize his/her
Brothers
My brother and I are both in our 40s (he's 7 years older with teen-aged kids no less) and he STILL smacks me on the back of the head when he walks by and I STILL want to kill him when he does it!!!
It immediately sends me back to age 10 on Saturday mornings with him waking me up by smacking me on the forehead and threatening to spit on me.
Brothers are brothers.
I'm Confused...
I'm confused as to how one (maybe two) throw away....off the cuff quips, during the show(s) about being from New Orleans, or his "hood," is so off putting to people. All the teams that have ever run The Amazing Race, have had a story...an oft repeated story. A gay story, a deaf story, a single mother story, being a christian story, a sibling story, whatever. Why is their story, so bothersome to some people? Maybe i'm not supposed to relate or connect with the Globetrotters, but i do....more so than the brothers. It's also curious how the one team (besides father and son) that's running a pretty positve and happy race...no bickering, shouting, crying, whining, tantrums, or blatant douch-baggery, get such a bad rap. I'm not a fan of basketball, not from New Orleans, or the hood but i'm enjoying their race the most. So far, they've run an exciting, fun and positvie race.
And what exactly makes them smarmy?
The Globetrotters
The Globetrotters have grown on me, but they aren't perfect. They egged Mika on when she wouldn't go down the waterslide. She was sitting there in tears and they were shouting at her "Don't do it", "Don't hurt yourself", etc. I don't recall any of the other teams rubbing failure in each others faces so blatently like that. Not a very good example to set, IMO, for guys who are supposed to be role-models. I know its about winning $1,000,000 at the end of the day, but that was a crappy thing to do.
yes, they indeed did do
Does anyone else get this obsessive?
I think I watch too much reality TV... I watch the cut-aways carefully each episode where they show the teams explaining things and try and guess which ones were eliminated. It can be telling sometimes, based on a losing teams tone of voice or how frazzled they look. I wonder when exactly they film those interview segments? They can't exactly stop the race, so when you see a team talking about a challenge it has already happened, I would imagine.
On a second viewing of last weeks show with my BF I could def. tell the poker players were a mess for their interviews and wearing the same clothes they were eliminated in.
Same this week. Sam and Dan were interviewed in the sun, dressed in diff. clothes, joking about The Globetrotters being their rivals. I guessed from that they would survive this week. Anybody else notice this?
I was so nervous for Sam & Dan this week
Most weeks, I haven't been particularly concerned about the brothers being at risk of elimination. However, as the hay unrolling task went on, I was dreading a bad outcome more and more. There was the non-elimination leg possibility but with so few teams left, the extra penalty task next episode would have been hard to overcome. The brothers were quite composed in the cut-away interview during the task (I think those are filmed shortly after the pit stop) so I had hope that they did managed to survive.
In retrospect, I'm not sure Dan could have managed the roadblock task like Sam did. Dan wears his emotions on his sleeve. If we thought he was freaking out just watching on the sidelines, imagine his state of mind if he had to unroll as many bales of hay as his brother ended up having to do. I think he would have had a meltdown in the middle of the field.
