“Brothers & Sisters” Episode 121 Recap: "Grapes of Wrath"

Cut to the outdoor courtyard. Nora is having her morning coffee and Professor Mark joins her. He apologizes again for the moonlight walk with Holly.

Nora: I should’ve known what I was getting into, dating you. A person always tells you exactly who they are from the very first moment you meet them. When I first met you, you were sleeping with an undergrad.

And when we first met you, you were Gidget. Oh gosh, Nora’s right. First impressions are always the most accurate.

Nora goes on to say the weekend was important because she’s finally learning to trust her instincts.

Mark: Nora, I realize that was a break up speech but, uh, how am I gonna get home?
Nora: This isn’t high school. I’ll drive you home.
Mark: Thank you.
Nora: You can sit in the back.

Brief aside to mention how glad I am that this looks like the end of the road for Professor Mark. Now what is the show going to do about Nora’s budding literary career? Let’s hope she abandons it along with Mark. Maybe she can take up scrapbooking. Even better, why don't they give Nora an "assassin with amnesia" plotline like Geena Davis had in The Long Kiss Goodnight? Margot Kidder could be her Samuel L. Jackson-esque sidekick, and they could jump out of exploding buildings and stuff.

Cut to the kitchen. Tommy is saying goodbye to investors and accepting checks. The wine-tasting event was a great success – the food-fight notwithstanding.

Investor: You gotta be crazy to make good wine. And clearly you guys are gonna do just fine.

The investor leaves and Julia hugs Tommy. Then, quelle surprise, she doubles over in pain.

Tommy: Honey, are you all right?
Julia: Oh my God. I think I’m having contractions!

Tommy runs to get Justin. Apparently, he thinks Tommy's army field medic experience will come in handy because giving birth happens a lot on the battlefield. Gee, I'd love it if Justin broke out his Butterfly McQueen impression: "I don't know nothin' about birthin' babies, Miss Scarlett!"
Wishful thinking on my part. Justin's contribution is to hold Julia's hand and tell Tommy to dial 911.
Julia: Help me! I think my water just broke. They’re not ready yet. They’re barely 29 weeks!

Will the twins survive? Perhaps more importantly, who's gonna clean up the kitchen after the food fight and Julia's broken water? Tune in next week to find out.

Brothers & Sisters airs Sundays at 10:00pm on ABC

Joe

Thank you. I have been pissed at their treatment of Joe for a while now, and their behavior says it all. They'd take in a stranger just because Walker blood is flowing in her veins but they won't give an in-law for 10 years a chance to even just explain.

Thank you for calling Justin on his bullshit. Little cheating ex-junkie, who disappointed every one of his family is now acting like the moral center of that clan. Excuse me? T

he doom-and-gloom surrounding Rebecca...I speculated on this in another forum. She must be bi-polar or something. Seriously, she's seriously fucked up which will make us like her despite her evilness.

Jump the Shark

I wonder at what point TV historians will mark that this show started losing its wheels? At the beginning of the season, I really looked forward to B & S. But, starting in March, the writers were throwing sub-plots on the wall like mud pies to deterine what would stick. Thanks, Dennis, for the re-caps. I just can't watch the show (But I need to know how the train wreck turns out.).

More repetitive and cartoonish each week

ANOTHER show where the Walkers get drunk? ANOTHER kiss to foul up a relationship? ANOTHER childish action by adults (food fight, hair plucking)? Isn't it too early for the show to be repeating itself? When is this whole crew going to get itself to AA meetings? Clearly, Justin was just the tip of the iceberg. I like many of the characters, especially Kevin, but I'm losing patience with the hacky storylines and silly fights and fits these people are stuck in. I think they've gone over the line into a comedy with moments of drama instead of the other way around. And not even David E. Kelley can pull that off for more than a season or two, and he's busy with other shows. These people are starting to feel more like cartoon characters than real people.

I Was A Bit Surprised....

... by the episode's outcome. I assumed that once Tommy and Julia decided to not go through with the operation, William would miraculously survive. I didn't think the show would have the baby die.

Frankly, there's a part of me that's troubled by the fact that they let it happen (though it is their right and their decision). I also can't believe that none of the Walker family had diverse or differing opinions about it (especially Kevin and/or Justin) given that they have opinions on everything. Maybe it'll come out later.

In other stories, I had a real problem with the Senator deciding that Justin needed to see how important what he had to do is by dragging him to that VA hospital. It seemed way out of line to me, especially since they hardly know each other. How Justin feels or does not feel about having to go to Iraq is none of his business.  I know the point was to show Kevin that the Senator really, really cares about the troops, but it only showed me how pushy and presumptuous the Senator is.  If I were Kevin, I still wouldn't have helped the Senator.  Because it doesn't change the fact that he's a liar.  And he's using that lie to get into office.

A very nice scene dealing with Joe moving out and their having to tell the kids.  The girl who plays Paige was terrific.

Looking forward to next week. The clip of Nora and Justin's scene showed looks like it'll be a heart breaker.

Guess it wasn't just me then....

When I saw GRAPES OF WRATH, I thought wow, this episode just didn't affect me like most of the others. I hesitated to admit that this one just disappointed me. I was hoping it was because I had become spoiled by all of the wonderful acting and writing that had come before. But after reading the comments here, I feel more validated than spoiled.
