“Brothers & Sisters” Episode 122 Recap: "Favorite Son"

Cut to a montage set to somber, Sarah McLachlan-type music as Kevin, Sarah, and Justin all in turn get the bad news. Either that, or they just found out rates went up on their Friends and Family calling plan.

Cut to later that evening on the hospital grounds. Tommy is outside sitting on a park bench coming to grips with the death of his son. Uncle Saul comes out to console him.

Tommy: I’m wondering. Did I do the right thing?
Saul: Yes you did! You did the right thing. Because you did what your heart told you to. And that could never be wrong.

Uh, who says? My "heart" has gotten me into all sorts of trouble over the years.

Saul: Death is part of life. And it would be hubris for us to think that we can make any decisions that are only God’s to make.
Tommy: It’s just so hard.
Saul: Your right it is hard. I won’t sit here and tell you that it gets easier, because it doesn’t. Time...it heals us. It does get better.

This Is Saul’s meandering, dare I say time-wasting, way of saying “time heals all wounds.” What, did the script run a little short this week so they had to pad the show with this little filler scene?

Cut to Julia’s hospital room the next day. Cue the happier music. Nora and Saul are there as Julia finally gets to hold the baby (the living one) for the first time.

Nora: What are you calling her if you don’t mind my asking?
Julia: Elizabeth.

Nora and Saul coo over the name. Tommy reaches over strokes the baby’s cheek.

Tommy: Hey, Elizabeth. One day we’ll tell you about your brother and how much we loved him….

Oh my god, I think its another one of those treacly sweet, one-sided conversations with non-sentient objects that the show always seems to stick Balthazar Getty with.

By example, earlier in the show it was his "have a nice time in heaven" speech to the dying baby. Earlier in the season they actually had him conversing with his dead father’s tombstone. Hey, now that I stop to think about it, most of his conversations with Julia are one-sided -- like he's talking to a potted plant.

Again I say -- they really need to give Julia a mind of her own. But I digress.

Thankfully, this time Tommy’s heartfelt musings are cut short as we close with another montage of the entire Walker clan (Rebecca included!) visiting the pediatric ward and seeing baby Elizabeth through the glass for the first time.

Nora: Look out world. Here comes Lizzie Walker!

That wraps another episode of Brothers & Sisters. Hey, next week is the season finale and no doubt big cliffhangers are in store. Quick note to B&S writers – not to be selfish, but can we maybe get back to the fun stuff? Like Kevin’s debauched love life? Or Nora’s shenanigans with Margot Kidder? It’s sort of hard to write humorously snarky recaps when the show is killing off innocent babies.

The Brothers & Sisters season finale airs on ABC Sunday, May 20th at 10:00pm.

It Was A Nice Episode....

but I miss the humor. Everything was so serious, but that's to be expected, I guess. The scene where Sarah and Joe break the news to the kids was very well done and the little girl that plays Paige was great in that segment.

I was surprised they killed off one of the babies and frankly, I was a little uneasy about the decision to do nothing and let the baby die and the family (especially Kevin and/or Justin) had nothing to say about it, even to someone other than Tommy or Julia.   And despite all the drama surrounding them, none of this made either Tommy or Julia interesting or particularly watchable. They can fade back into the woodwork now.

I was happy for the change

I like a break from their drunken hijinks and screw-ups, to remind people that they're a family and they have their real crises (not the sitcom thing like Kitty and the pills) as every family does.

Kevin and Justin agreed to let Tommy and Julia have all the decisions about the kids, so they probably weren't going to intervene during such a delicate situation.

Julia I could take or leave, but I do like Tommy. I think he's the normal one of the family, the one they sort of need. I'd rather see him than all the Kitty/Rob Lowe stuff.

The Whedon kids made this episode

Every beat of the talk felt heartbreakingly real. Even with Cooper being obliviously perky until he sensed at the end that his sister was upset and asked to go to her room too. God, I hate Rebecca. She doesn't have the right to get googly-eyed over Elizabeth. There better be some uber-fucked up story about Chicago or she stays in the bitch goddess from hell box that I stuck her mother in.
