“Brothers & Sisters” Episode 201 Recap: “Home Front”

Cut back to the mansion where Rebecca is recording her own Vmail for Justin

Rebecca: Justin. Hey. I don’t know how you are right now. Or where you are. But I’m just going to assume that you’re all right, and you’ll be watching this soon. I’ve been getting to know your family. Not that that’s an easy thing to do because, well, they are all a little unhinged, but I think I’m finally starting figure them all out.

We see a montage of each Walker sibling. Tommy is home rocking baby cabbage. Sarah is cuddling up to daughter Paige. Kevin is alone in his apartment drinking whiskey straight from the bottle. He gets down on his knees by the coffee table to pray. Probably asking the hangover gods not to punish him for mixing his liquors tonight.

Finally we see Kitty, who is unwrapping her father’s birthday gift from the year before – the one she had been saving “for when she really needed it.” Let’s hope it’s not like a Starbucks card or something. Nope, turns out it’s a Saint George medallion, on the back of which is inscribed “Be Strong.”

Rebecca: ….and you were wrong about being the black sheep. You’re the heart of this family, Justin. They need you. And I need you. So please be okay. Please.

Episode 201 grade: B-

Brothers & Sisters returns next Sunday, October 7th.

B & S "Home Front"

A "B-" ?? While reading the recap I thought you were just being snarky for snarkiness' sake, but then I saw this grade. Nunununu-NO! I loved it. It got me going on all the necessary fronts for the season: (1) I bet Justin will come home wounded so we won't miss him for the whole season. (2) Sarah and Joe are obviously in for some testy and heavy moments, which so many of us can relate to. (3) Saul will have to face/deal with his past homo behavior--and maybe we'll get to see some. (4) I understand Eric Winter is appearing in another show this season, so we got to enjoy him for this episode (always with the open possibility of him coming back) and it frees Kevin up for the next guy, always a fun anticipation. (And we do know that Luke MacFarlane will have a broad hand in that!) (5) The campaign/marriage trail is alive and kicking for McAllister and Kitty, and right in with the current news. (6) And there's Mama Nora, always the link between them all, yet open to moving her own life ahead from time to time. (7) Holly? Rebecca? Ping pong tables for the Walker life. I'm glad they play the Walkter-antidote to some degree and also glad they do not have to bounce to the front too often, altho Rebecca may develop. If I had to grade it, it would definitely be a B+ for me, and only that because I need more this-year episodes to compare it to. OK, that's my 2 (or 3) cents.

Quote

I’m half expecting Holly to pull out a big box of her own and hand it to Kitty. “This is the crotchless panty / negligee set I wore on my first night with your father. I thought maybe you’d want to wear it for your honeymoon.”

 LMAO! Really enjoyed this

New Mistress? Not!

and oh, about that false-alarm-new-william-walker-mistress, did u see her shoes???

my god, i almost puked. her whole ensemble disgusts me.

if i were nora or holly and saw that walking right to my dead husband's grave, i wouldn't have given it a second thought of another mistress, i'd be busy barfing all over the flowers.

gee, the tank top, the hideous skirt and that offensive shoes! omg, i'm gonna puke again. later.

Show Queens Rule

I sooo disagree with you about Kevin being a show queen. I find show queens the sexiest. Although, I'd rather he was into "A Little Night Music" or "Sweeney Todd" than "Wicked". But, I am so tired of all the regular gays hating on us showqueens (look--you've driven me to uncomfortable slang).

You're quite right, db.

It's not like Kevin is obsessed with obscure Sondheim and knows the score from Whoop Up! by heart. Not THAT'S a show queen!

Now this is a Show Queen :)

Seth Rudetsky is THE Show Queen. Seth's Broadway Chatterbox.

And I just thought I'd share this clip from his Chatterbox show...I love this song and their voices

I'm taking a lot of grief

From all sides about the Wicked/showtunes potshot I took at Kevin. My bad, and sorry if I offended anyone. And if truth be told, I've got some Broadway soundtracks in my cd rack too.

Is Kevin really a Show Queen?

I know he mentioned Wicked in the last episode and last year he mentioned that Wicked would make Justin a lover of musicals...is't he just a total Wickian? Am I forgetting a point where he gushed over his love of showtunes?

Ugh, it sucks!

Ugh, it sucks big time that Jason will be gone! Hopefully he returns soon and I want Kevin to be faithful to him!

Show Queens, etc

Hey I love Wicked, too, does that make me a "Show Queen"? I think not.

That only proves that Kevin and I are meant to be.

LMAO. what? I'm bored.

I loved Wicked too...

... until I saw Legally Blonde (just how many gay men can you fit into one theatre?). Now the Wicked soundtrack sounds very dark and a bit miserable by comparison (apart from Popular, of course). Don't get me wrong, it's still excellent, but it's Legally Blonde that still has me humming the tunes nearly four months on. I'm quite happy with gay characters liking show tunes in movies - didn't Val Kilmer's character from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang like them too? - and he wasn't camp at all.

SHOW QUEEN PRIDE

Liking Wicked doesn't make anyone a show queen. But--you all talk about it as though there's something wrong with being show queens. I am out and proud as a show queen--and we are a repressed minority within a repressed minority. I say it's time for us show queens of all sexual orientations to band together against this oppression. I live for the day we can walk down the street proudly singing DON'T RAIN ON MY PARADE together.

Eric Winter's denominational affiliation

Eric made the comment that he was Methodist. That's kind of episcopalian but not really.

"Summer Love" and we missed it

I always enjoy getting some laughter from your Brothers and Sisters recaps. "Cabbage" is going to stick for me as the baby's name. I so agree about missing out on the fun of watching Kevin and Jason's growing relationship. What a waste of great potential. I loved the Scotty and Kevin dynamic together. However, Eric Winter has won me over. He is so darn cute. And he looks so natural in his acting. He plays his character as a man who is very comfortable in his own skin and more at peace than Kevin as a character. He appears to be so "even" with less angst than Kevin or Scotty as a character. I would like to see how Kevin enriches Jason's life. I can see how Jason enriches Kevin's life by bringing stability into what could be a very believable long-term relationship. Oh, well...
