"Brothers & Sisters" Episode 203 Recap: “History Repeating”

Cut back to the Walker mansion Nora is railing yet again about the virtues of barbiturates. At last, Justin relents and tells her to fill the prescription. Anything to shut her up.

Nora: (relieved) It’ll be okay Justin, I swear. I asked your sponsor to come by tomorrow, and I’ll monitor your meds.

Apparently, the sponsor is known to raid medicine cabinets.

Cut to Tommy’s house. He’s all alone. The phone rings.

Tommy: Honey?
Lena: No, it’s Lena. It’s been crazy around here and I thought I’d catch up with you. Are you okay?

What did I tell ya. Julia’s carcass isn’t even cold yet, and Lena comes swooping in.

Cut to the Walker mansion kitchen. Tommy and Kevin have stopped by and Nora wants to make hot fudge sundaes. She’s celebrating because she finally got Justin sedated.

Nora: He had 160 milligrams about two hours ago. A pain level of seven would be about a two by now. God I hate knowing so much about this stuff.

Nora takes a bowl of ice cream up to Rebecca and thanks her for helping to convince Justin to take the pain meds.

Rebecca: Nora, I have a lot of friends who are addicts. And when they head back down this road – sorry, but everything changes. You have to lock things up. Count his pills. He may not be Justin for awhile.

Cut to the kitchen where Kevin and Tommy are arguing over who played Tiny Tim in their elementary school Christmas Carol production. Justin comes in. He’s a little foggy but no longer in agony. No doubt he'll be bumping into furniture all the time but not feeling it. Frankly, I like this foggy version of Justin much better. Call him Justin 3.0. Nora watches him pensively. What has she done?

Episode 202 grade: B-

This was a tough episode to grade. It gets high marks for some great acting and dialog, but the storylines are not all that compelling. The major drama in this episode (and the last) is whether Justin will maybe, possibly, temporarily, get hooked on painkillers. That doesn’t seem like it's enough to carry a night-time drama.

I know the show’s writers probably want to avoid outrageous storylines that might “jump the shark,” but for everyone’s sake they should at least run up and kick it once in a while. Let’s hope for more exciting fare next week.

Brothers & Sisters returns next Sunday, October 21st.

William II and Elizabeth

Tommy and Julia had twins, William Walker II and Elizabeth Walker. Elizabeth was fine, but William II had several things wrong with him, particularly his kidneys. Both were failing. The doctors could transplant one of Elizabeth's kidneys into William, but since they were both so tiny and premature, the procedure could kill Elizabeth.

So: do a transplant, and maybe lose both babies; or allow William to die naturally and Elizabeth survives. Tommy and Julia decided to allow William to die naturally, and now they have Elizabeth.

Julia is mourning William and has a bad case of post-partum depression. In her grief she's blaming Tommy.

Woohoo.

Woohoo, Scotty's back. Here's hoping he leaves as soon as possible. I know that many love him but he leaves me cold...and way too irritated whenever he comes by for a visit. And if ever Berlanti and co want them to hook up again, please make it so that Kevin doesn't cheat on Jason. Make the relationship fail stereiotypically because of the distance, rather than have anyone cheat, especially not Kevin cheating with the New! & Improved! Scotty Wandell.

Bad Bad Episode

This was the worst episode yet of this great series. At least four scenes of Nora nagging, nagging, nagging poor Justin to take drugs again so his pain doesn't cause her any more "anguish". This from the woman who had to rush down to San Diego, rudely push her way through the hospital staff and yank Justin out of the military hospital before he had any useful Rehab on that knee, just so she could get her baby home. Oh! and make sure he takes the drugs the day before his Sponsor can talk to Justin about it. Now she can rest for about 6 hours before she starts her "anguish" about Justin back on drugs and start her nag, nag, nagging, again. Further problems- Has Kitty just totally given up doing any work as a Communication Director? If so then she should stop bitching about being just the "Fiancee". Her last comments to the ex-wife about finding the Nanny and saying "hello to Larry", I thought she was referring to the Ex-wife's boyfriend, playing hardball, but now I see she was just talking about Larry King. Scotty- a nice shirt with tie and the sleeves rolled sloppily up to the elbows, very Carson very tacky. Plus I thought he meant an old Queen T-shirt, as in the band, Queen. The only queen in this show was Kevin, what a big wuss, faithful to the man who left you for a GodDamn year.

kevin's storyline

I enjoy his character. Kevin shows us that gays can have just as many relationship problems as straights. It's fun watching him screw up just like we all do...I'm far from ready to see him get serious with anyone...it's just too much fun watching him stumble through the dating minefield! He'll settle down soon enough...which can lead to even more interesting problems....but I just gotta say...I LOVE this show and I'm glad it lasted...it takes more than a star cast to make it these days! They shouldnt've censured Sally Field at the Emmys. And finally is it just me or is it Dave Anabel who plays Justin that's the real cutie of this show? Justin's my favorite...I knew they weren't killing him off
